Fixer Roy Cohn served as Trump’s lawyer and mentor for 13 years in the 1970s and 1980s. According to Trump, Cohn sometimes waived fees due to their friendship. In 1973, Cohn helped Trump countersue the United States government for $100 million over its charges that Trump’s properties had racial discriminatory practices. Trump and Cohn lost that case when the countersuit was dismissed and the government’s case went forward. In 1975, an agreement was struck requiring Trump’s properties to furnish the New York Urban League with a list of all apartment vacancies, every week for two years, among other things. While Trump has not filed for personal bankruptcy, his over-leveraged hotel and casino businesses in Atlantic City and New York filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection six times between 1991 and 2009. They continued to operate while the banks restructured debt and reduced Trump’s shares in the properties.

Its all very, very unfair to me.

Next time, nobody should be allowed to tell the people who to vote for or even who is running until theyre in the voting booth. Otherwise, theres just too much opportunity for collusion.

But now that I think of it, I dont even want to be president anyway. I hate this country. Youre all a bunch of lazy rednecks. How dumb do you have to be to elect a man like me? You pushed me to be someone I wasnt. Im over it and this swamp.

States Still Baffled Over How To Get Coronavirus Supplies From Trump

Governors are trying any method they can think of contacting FEMA, making Twitter pleas, calling Trump and going to the media.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis was pleading with the federal government to send ventilators.

The state was starting to see hundreds of new coronavirus cases pop up each day, and Polis, a Democrat, worried that hospitals wouldnt have enough life-saving ventilators to deal with the looming spike.

So he made an official request for ventilators through the Federal Emergency Management System, which is managing the effort. That went nowhere. He wrote to Vice President Mike Pence, leader of the White Houses coronavirus task force. That didnt work. He tried to purchase supplies himself. The federal government swooped in and bought them.

Then, on Tuesday, five weeks after the states first coronavirus case, the states Republican Sen. Cory Gardner called President Donald Trump. The federal government sent 100 ventilators to Colorado the next day, but still only a fraction of what the state wanted.

Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesnt.

This is not something that we should ever be faced with, Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly, a Democrat, said in an interview. It really is the federal governments responsibility to build those stockpiles, and distribute those during the time of crisis.

Trump Is Attacking Oversight At Every Turn

As part of its efforts to undermine the rule of law, the Trump administration has targeted institutions that might seek to provide accountability: law enforcement, inspectors general, and Congress. All of these bodies have traditionally acted as checks on executive overreach and abuse of power. But the Trump administration has attacked each of them, seeking to delegitimize them or corrupt them to its own ends. The weakening of these institutions has further emboldened the administration.

Politicizing law enforcement

The Department of Justice states that part of its mission is to seek just punishment for those guilty of unlawful behavior and to ensure fair and impartial administration of justice for all Americans.29 As the Justice Manual makes clear:

The legal judgments of the Department of Justice must be impartial and insulated from political influence. It is imperative that the Departments investigatory and prosecutorial powers be exercised free from partisan consideration. It is a fundamental duty of every employee of the Department to ensure that these principles are upheld in all of the Departments legal endeavors.30

But Trump has been intent from his first day in office to turn the department into a political weapon to protect his friends and attack his enemies. He views the role of the attorney general as someone who protects the president from accountability.31 In Attorney General William Barr, Trump has found someone who fits that mold perfectly.

Relationship With The Press

Trump began promoting himself in the press in the 1970s, and continued to seek media attention throughout his career, sustaining a “lovehate” relationship with the press. In the 2016 campaign, Trump benefited from a record amount of free media coverage, elevating his standing in the Republican primaries.The New York Times writer Amy Chozick wrote in 2018 that Trump’s media dominance enthralled the public and created “must-see TV.”

As a candidate and as president, Trump frequently accused the press of bias, calling it the “fake news media” and “the enemy of the people“. In 2018, journalist Lesley Stahl recounted Trump’s saying he intentionally demeaned and discredited the media “so when you write negative stories about me no one will believe you”.

Addressing Concerns To Holding The Trump Administration Accountable

Restoring the rule of law will force a future administration to make tough choices. There is always a desire to turn the page on past corruption, and there are good-faith arguments that can been made to this effect. Specifically, there may be concerns raised that any investigation would set a dangerous precedent that there will be a need to move the country forward and that holding the administration accountable will invariably look political and distract from other priorities. These arguments deserve consideration, but they ultimately fail to fully reckon with the nature of the Trump administrations attack on the rule of law and the dangers posed by ignoring it.

Failing to hold the Trump administration accountable will lead to further attacks on the rule of law

Any investigations should be driven by career officials following the facts where they lead. The only way to address the politicization of law enforcement is by eliminating it, which means that people in the Trump administration, or those with connections to the administration, do not receive special treatment.

How A Future President Can Hold The Trump Administration Accountable

The Trump administration has undertaken a sustained attack on the rule of law, but a future administration can take immediate steps to restore it.

The Trump administration has engaged in a wide-ranging pattern of actions that violate laws, agency regulations, and ethical requirements, repeatedly putting its own interests before the public interest. Administration officials and their allies have lied to federal investigators,1 lied to Congress,2 and sought to obstruct federal investigations,3 among other illegal actions. These efforts constitute a direct and sustained attack on the rule of law that effectively creates two justice systemsone for the Trump administration and its allies and one for everyone else.

As part of its attack on the rule of law, the administration has worked to subvert the very institutions that might hold it accountableincluding the U.S. Department of Justice ,4 inspectors general,5 and Congress6to eliminate even the possibility of oversight.

Whenever the Trump administration ends, there may be good-faith concerns that addressing the administrations misconduct will be too divisive, set a bad precedent, or lead to political pushback from the administrations supporters. But the lesson from the past four years is clear: The absence of accountability is treated as license to escalate abuses of power.

While Congress will have a role in seeking to prevent future abuses, there are immediate steps a future administration can take.

Approval Ratings And Scholar Surveys

Trump was the only president to never reach a 50% approval rating in the Gallup poll dating to 1938. The approval ratings showed a record partisan gap: 88 percent among Republicans, 7 percent among Democrats. Until September 2020, the ratings were unusually stable, reaching a high of 49 percent and a low of 35 percent. Trump finished his term with a record-low approval rating of between 29 percent and 34 percent and a record-low average of 41 percent throughout his presidency.

In Gallup’s annual poll asking Americans to name the man they admire the most, Trump placed second to Obama in 2017 and 2018, tied with Obama for most admired man in 2019, and was named most admired in 2020. Since Gallup started conducting the poll in 1948, Trump is the first elected president not to be named most admired in his first year in office.

Misogyny And Allegations Of Sexual Misconduct

Trump has a history of insulting and belittling women when speaking to media and on social media. He made lewd comments, demeaned women’s looks, and called them names, such as ‘dog’, ‘crazed, ‘crying lowlife’, ‘face of a pig’, or ‘horseface’.

In October 2016, two days before the second presidential debate, a 2005 “hot mic” recording surfaced in which Trump is heard bragging about kissing and groping women without their consent, saying “when you’re a star, they let you do it, you can do anything… grab ’em by the .” The incident’s widespread media exposure led to Trump’s first public apology during the campaign and caused outrage across the political spectrum.

At least 26 women, including his first wife, have publicly accused Trump of rape, kissing and groping without consent, looking under women’s skirts, or walking in on naked teenage pageant contestants. In 2016, he denied all accusations, calling them “false smears” and alleging a conspiracy against him and the American people.

Trump Won Evangelical Support By Promising More Freedom

Early in his campaign, Trump was endorsed by Jerry Falwell Jr., president of Liberty University. Trump convinced many evangelicals that he would secure their First Amendment free exercise rights and exempt them from government regulations, such as the requirement that health plans provide access to birth-control pills that they consider to be abortifacients. As president, Trump signed an executive order seeking protections for religious freedom .

Russia: Trump & His Teams Ties

Despite Russias harmful national interests against the U.S., and its human rights violations around the world, President Trump and his team are directly and indirectly tied to Russia.

Throughout the 2016 presidential election, President Trump not only refused to criticize Russian President Vladimir Putin, but was even friendly and accommodating in his remarks. In his own words, President Trump called President Putin highly respected.” More recently, President Trump put the U.S. on equal moral footing with Russia when responding to Bill OReillys question about Putin being a “killer,” saying “We’ve got a lot of killers… you think our country’s so innocent?” This is absolutely false moral equivalence, and unheard of for the President of the United States to insult and demean the country he leads.

President Trump has harshly criticized NATO, and exclaimed that only the NATO allies that paid equally to the alliance deserved protection from the United States. Though these remarks were softened by British Prime Minister Theresa May, who claims that President Trump fully supports the North Atlantic Treaty Organization , it’s still unclear how supportive he will be of NATO allies like the Baltic states in light of his relationship with Russia.
