Trump Distorts Facts In Pennsylvania Rally

Posted on September 7, 2022

As the Department of Justice investigates his handling of highly classified documents, former President Donald Trump spoke for nearly two hours in a rally in Pennsylvania that was filled with false, exaggerated and misleading statements:

Trump made his remarks Sept. 3 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, at a campaign rally for the states Republican candidates for governor and U.S. Senate. The rally came less than a month after FBI agents executed a search warrant at Mar-a-Lago.

Supporters Think Trump Was Set Up

The crowd was on his side when it came to the FBIs search.

This region supported Mr Trump in the 2020 election, even though Pennsylvania overall slipped from his grasp and chose Mr Biden.

Two supporters had already procured Defund the FBI T-shirts to wear to the rally.

Gail McCloskey, from the city of Altoona, nearly a three-hour drive away, told the BBC she thought the FBI visit was a set up.

Meanwhile, Kelly Borgogelli, 60, who had driven four hours from Buffalo, New York, to see Mr Trump, said: Theyre just going after him for pure hate.

Asked if she believed any of the multiple accusations made against Mr Trump over the years that he incited a violent mob to storm the US Capitol last year, that he improperly pressured Ukraines president to investigate his political enemies, or that he falsified claims of election fraud in 2020 Mrs Borgogelli replied she did not.

Theyve never given us any proof, she said.

Her companion, Maureen Ewart, 62, said if the justice department actually charged Mr Trump, the country would be divided.

It will be crowded out there, the streets will be full, Ms Ewart said, emphasising that she did not condone violence but feared any criminal charges against the former president could spark civil unrest.

At one point, Mr Trump himself claimed that the latest investigation into his possession of government documents was going to produce a backlash the likes of which the country had not seen before.

Trump Asks Supreme Court To Intervene In Classified Documents Probe

Trump is also facing investigation from the Department of Justice into whether he improperly stored classified documents, potentially including information related to national security, at his Florida Mar-a-Lago residence. The FBI raided the property on August 8, seizing 20 boxes allegedly containing the classified information.

Trump requested on Tuesday for the conservative-led U.S. Supreme Court to intervene to ensure that the documents would be reviewed by special master Raymond Dearie to determine if they are protected by special or attorney-client privilege.

Legal expert Laurence Tribe predicted on Thursday the DOJ appeared to be taking a step toward indicting Trump for not turning over classified documents. Legal experts, however, told Newsweek last week that it remains unlikely the FBI would arrest Trump before the midterms.

Trump has maintained his innocence and has said he declassified the documents when he removed them from the White House.

Hints But No Trump Presidential Announcement At Dayton Rally

Former President Donald Trump stopped just short of saying he would run for the White House again in 2024 during a rally at a business at the Dayton International Airport on Monday.

During a nearly two hour speech, Trump hinted at a run often. During a more than 15-minute exposition on what’s wrong with America set to music, Trump finally said he would make a “big election announcement” on Tuesday, Nov. 15, at his Florida home Mar-a-Lago because he didn’t want to detract from the critical midterm elections on Tuesday.

Trump then went through a list of candidates he has endorsed in Ohio and across the country, such as Republican JD Vance in the open U.S. Senate race in the state.

“Two years ago we were a great nation, and we will be a great nation again,” Trump said.

Media outlets, including Axios and The Hill, had reported that some Republican sources believed Trump might announce a 2024 presidential bid at the Dayton rally.

Ahead of the rally, Ohio Democratic Party Chair Elizabeth Walters said in a statement that Trump is coming in to try to save lackluster Ohio Republican candidates.

Trump also showed screenshots of polls that he said showed him ahead in a rematch with Biden including in Ohio drawing chants of “four more years” from the crowd.

Trump arrived about 8:30 p.m. He talked about securing the border. He said it would stop the flow of drugs like fentanyl into the United States. Trump also blamed inflation on Democrats.

Pm: Trump Uses Rally To Bash Biden Ducey

Former President Donald Trump used his 93-minute remarks at his rally in Florence to give a fresh blistering to his usual foils President Joe Biden, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey and the media to the resounding support of the thousands of diehard supporters at Canyon Moon Ranch.

Trump also renewed his grievances and cast his four years in office as a period of unprecedented prosperity and security.

Early in his remarks, which ended at 8:51 p.m., Trump cast Bidens administration as an unfolding disaster and continued his baseless claims of widespread election fraud in 2020.

Biden has utterly humiliated our nation, Trump said, saying that Russia and Chinas leaders no longer respect or fear America.

Trump said the past year under Biden has been a disaster but said there would be a good political end to the catastrophe at the outset of the new year.

The speech was an updated version of Trumps usual America-first rhetoric, long on personal boasts and lacking in subtlety.

The country is being destroyed, he said, after citing rising inflation and the nations disastrous retreat from Afghanistan. Our country is being totally destroyed.

Trump called the COVID-19 response under Biden a disaster, from vaccine mandates to testing shortages.

Im proud I was the anti-mandate president, Trump said. We gave Biden every tool he could want. Hes incapable.

A History Of Insult And Outrage

Trump Holds Campaign Rally In Wisconsin | NBC News

Americas presidents have endured meanness for centuries Grover Cleveland faced chants of Ma, Ma Wheres my Pa? in the 1880s over rumors hed fathered an illegitimate child. Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson were the subject of poems that leaned into racist tropes and allegations of bigamy.

We have a sense of the dignity of the office of president that has consistently been violated to our horror over the course of American history, said Cal Jillson, a politics expert and professor in the political science department at Southern Methodist University. We never fail to be horrified by some new outrage.

There were plenty of old outrages.

F Trump graffiti still marks many an overpass in Washington, D.C. George W. Bush had a shoe thrown in his face. Bill Clinton was criticized with such fervor that his most vocal critics were labeled the Clinton crazies.

The biggest difference, though, between the sentiments hurled at the Grover Clevelands of yore and modern politicians is the amplification they get on social media.

Before the expansion of social media a few years ago, there wasnt an easily accessible public forum to shout your nastiest and darkest public opinions, said Matthew Delmont, a history professor at Dartmouth College.

Biden Obama And Trump Hold Dueling Midterm Rallies In Pennsylvania

The battleground state could very well determine which party wins the Senate.

Pennsylvania’s staking its claim as center of the political universe this weekend as presidents past and present campaign for their candidates ahead of midterms Election Day.

President Joe Biden and former President Barack Obama teamed up Saturday to stump for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Josh Shapiro and Senate candidate John Fetterman in Philadelphia.

“This crowd is so loud I think they can hear us in Latrobe,” Biden said in his opening remarks, taking a swing at former President Donald Trump’s rally there later Saturday night. “They’re going to hear us on Tuesday.”

“The power to shape that outcome is in your hands,” Biden said. “Two years ago, you used your power not only to make Trump a former president, but a defeated president.”

Trump held a rally at Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in support of Republican gubernatorial candidate Doug Mastriano and Senate candidate Dr. Mehmet Oz, calling them both “great people.”

“You’re going to elect the incredible slate of true America-first Republicans up and down the ballot,” Trump said. On the Biden and Obama event at Temple University, Trump said, “I heard they had a little rally.”

“It’s just another indicator that we are a deep purple state that makes up our mind late and oftentimes does split the ticket among Democrats and Republicans,” Dix added.

Trumps Upcoming Rally Schedule: What Supporters Can Expect In 2022

The U.S. prides itself on being the largest democracy but the Capitol Hill riot that happened on Jan 6, 2021, went down in history as a blot on Americas democracy. Kirsten Gillibrand Definitely Wants To Run For President Again

While Trump won Florida, Ohio and North Carolina in both the 2016 and 2020 elections, last year he became the first Republican candidate to lose Georgia in a presidential election since George H.W. Bush in 1992.

The former president has since cast aspersions on the conduct of Georgia election officials, including Republican secretary of state Brad Raffensperger, over his defeat and insisted without evidence that the loss was the result of voter fraud. Republicans went on to lose both of Georgias US Senate seats in a pair of special elections in January, handing Democrats full control of Congress and the White House.

Trump again refused to confirm Thursday whether he would run for president in 2024, saying only: Im gonna make a decision at the right time and Ill let you know.

Pennsylvania’s marquee Senate race could determine which party wins control of the chamber. Republicans need to gain just one seat to become the majority, as Democrats currently control the 50-50 Senate with Vice President Kamala Harris acting as the tie-breaker.

“That race has been on the razor’s edge for a long time,” said Christopher Nicholas, a longtime Republican strategist in Pennsylvania.

The margin between Fetterman and Oz is getting tighter by the day, according to FiveThirtyEight’s polling average, with the two candidates separated by just 0.4 percentage points.

“There’s no quit in John Fetterman,” Biden said Saturday. “There’s no quit in Pennsylvania. There’s no quit in America, we just have to remember who we are, we are the United States of America.”

Biden also took a shot at Oz, who was criticized for living in New Jersey until late 2020: “I’ve lived in Pennsylvania longer than Oz has lived in Pennsylvania, and I moved when I was 10 years old,” Biden said.

In a message to voters on Saturday, Fetterman pitched himself as a lifelong public servant while accusing Oz of trying to “use” Pennsylvania and attempting to buy the seat.

Oz, in a closing pitch at a rally in Elizabethtown earlier this week, described himself as an agent of change and encouraged attendees to tell neighbors about his message on the economy, crime and the border.

A crowd anxiously waits outside Saturday before the Trump rally at the Ford Wyoming Center in Casper.

He returned multiple times to criticizing the media, even while asking why there were so many reporters in attendance.

Every one of them is fake news, he said, to big cheers.

After ripping into Cheney, Trumps speech drifted over a number of topics, from the Russia investigation to his most popular tweets. At one point, he told the crowd to get off Twitter and onto his social media platform, Truth Social.

Pm: Ward: Who Won The Election Crowd: Trump

Many if not most people in the crowd seemed to believe Trumps insistence that he really won the election by a lot. A year of investigation, numerous courts throwing out lawsuits claiming they had evidence of fraud and the results of the audit authorized by the Arizona Senate did not seem to deter crowd members from their belief.

Kelli Ward, chair of the Arizona Republican Party, who took the stage first, made that clear. She gave a brief speech that began by asking the crowd to respond to the question Who won the election?

Trump! the crowd roared.

Seeming to address concerns by many Republicans about the election system, Ward urged people to please, please go out and vote.

Ward claimed that cheating also occurred in 2016, but we overwhelmed their cheating algorithm.

Get rid of Dominion! Get rid of drop boxes! she shouted. Lets restore integrity to our election.

Many of the people in the crowd wore colorful costumes, Trump apparel and shirts supporting Trump or Arizona Republican candidates for office such as gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake or U.S. Senate contender Jim Lamon.

The crowd included many young people and senior citizens, though most in attendance seemed to be middle-aged. The festival atmosphere included food trucks, loudspeakers blaring a mix of country and classic rock, long lines for the portable toilets and a stage with bleachers for VIPs.

Diehard belief in the falsehood that Trump actually won the 2020 election was a strong theme.

Trump Ramps Up Rally Schedule | 11th Hour

The former president is currently involved in a legal tussle with federal authorities over a cache of classified documents that the FBI seized last month.

Government authorities say Mr Trump improperly took and stored White House documents, including some marked top secret at his Florida home the Mar-a-Lago resort.

Federal prosecutors now say he may have obstructed the investigation into his possession of the documents.

Mr Trump has previously spun investigations and attacks against him as witch hunts, and it was no different on Saturday.

He came out swinging, calling the FBIs search the shameful raid and break-in on my home in Mar-a-Lago a travesty.

The former president has long built his appeal by casting himself and his supporters as political outsiders and persecuted figures.

Mr Trump linked his personal legal troubles to his supporters political frustrations, claiming: We are being assaulted⦠by the FBI and DOJ.

It was not just my home that was raided⦠it was the hopes and dreams of every citizen who Ive been fighting for since the moment I came down the golden escalator in 2015, wanting to represent the people, he added, drawing boos from the crowd.
