Changing Views On Acceptance Of Homosexuality

Why LGBTQ Republicans Hate The Party’s Platform But Like Donald Trump

Seven-in-ten now say homosexuality should be accepted by society, compared with just 24% who say it should be discouraged by society. The share saying homosexuality should be accepted by society is up 7 percentage points in the past year and up 19 points from 11 years ago.

While there has been an increase in acceptance of homosexuality across all partisan and demographic groups, Democrats remain more likely than Republicans to say homosexuality should be accepted by society.

Overall, 83% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents say homosexuality should be accepted by society, while only 13% say it should be discouraged. The share of Democrats who say homosexuality should be accepted by society is up 20 points since 2006 and up from 54% who held this view in 1994.

Among Republicans and Republican leaners, more say homosexuality should be accepted than discouraged by society. This is the first time a majority of Republicans have said homosexuality should be accepted by society in Pew Research Center surveys dating to 1994. Ten years ago, just 35% of Republicans held this view, little different than the 38% who said this in 1994.

Acceptance is greater among those with postgraduate and bachelors degrees than among those with some or no college experience .

Trans Rights: A Perplexing Issue

Like many other gay conservatives, however, he seems to disconnect gay rights and transgender rights. Kabel recalled a recent article with a quotation from the conservative activist Tony Perkins that contrasted the Democratic and Republican platforms in 2016.

The only issue Perkins raised was the transgender bathroom issue, Kabel said. And I thought, That means we won.’

Kabel called transgender equality one of the most perplexing issues going.

Transgender people deserve support and protection just like anybody else, but its a very complex issue, he said. Its remarkable when you hear their stories, but its just a very perplexing issue about how to really address it and do it so that theyre protected but other people arent hurt, so that peoples religious views are actually taken into consideration.

Transgender visibility is all but absent in the Log Cabin Republicans, from their leadership to their messaging.

An OUTSpoken Instagram post compares the LGBT left to the LGBT right by putting an image of a person who appears to be transgender or gender-nonconforming next to a shirtless picture of former U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock, while the campaigns store sells T-shirts bearing slogans like gay for Tuckergay for Melania and gay not stupid.

OUTspoken sent Brokeback Patriot, who has stated trans women are not women, to New Orleans Southern Decadence party to ask passersby if they think Trump is pro-gay.

Presidency Of Ronald Reagan

On the 1980 campaign trail, Reagan said of gay civil rights movements,

My criticism is that isn’t just asking for civil rights it’s asking for recognition and acceptance of an alternative lifestyle which I do not believe society can condone, nor can I.

No civil rights legislation for LGBT individuals passed during Reagan’s tenure. Additionally, Reagan has been criticized by some LGBT groups for allegedly ignoring the growing AIDS epidemic, even as it took thousands of lives in the 1980s. Reagan’s Surgeon General from 1982 to 1989, Dr. C. Everett Koop, claimed that his attempts to address the issue were shut out by the Reagan Administration. According to Koop, the prevailing view of the Reagan Administration was that “transmission of AIDS was understood to be primarily in the homosexual population and in those who abused intravenous drugs” and therefore that people dying from AIDS were “only getting what they justly deserve”.

On August 18, 1984, President Reagan issued a statement on the issue of same-sex unions that read,

Reagan made the comment in response to a questionnaire from the conservative publishers of the Presidential Biblical Scoreboard, a magazine-type compilation of past statements and voting records of national candidates.

In 1988, the Republican Party’s nominee, then-Vice President George H. W. Bush, endorsed a plan to protect persons with AIDS from discrimination.

The Disney Vault Is Annoying

Disney has drawn the ire of many adoring fans because it only releases its movies to the public for home consumption for a limited amount of time. They even coined a term for this tactic, The Disney Vault. Audiences think this is corporate greed at its ugliest. Disney has a commodity, and they try to build fervor and revenue by only letting the consumer have access to it for a short period. Its basically the same business model McDonalds uses with the McRib and we all know how much everyone hates that. Can you imagine if the Star Wars movies were only sold periodically? Thatd be an outrage, right? Well, you can expect it to happen since Disney bought the rights in 2012 to all things Star Wars, from George Lucas for over $4 billion. Its no wonder why Disney movies have been pirated since VCRs came on the scene in the 1980s.

Conservatives Dont Hate Socialism They Hate Equality

Do Republicans Really Hate Gay People?

They want to take away your hamburgers, former Trump aide Sebastian Gorka in February. This is what Stalin dreamt about America will never be a socialist country! The Conservative Political Action Conference audience cheered. The video played on my phone as I waved at Danny, the homeless man who begs for food every morning at the Newark Penn Station, where scores of poor people sleep in wheelchairs or lean on crutches or stand by the delis to ask for change.

These folks need more than hamburgers. They need jobs and homes. Yet, as the 2020 election season starts, Trump has branded progressives as socialists who will steal property and bring tyranny. The presidents fearmongering contrasts with the actual Green New Deal that some Democrats support but failed to pass in the GOP-controlled Senate. Its a fear driven by ideology. Republicans paint the poor as undeserving, marked by cultural or personal character flaws. Whereas Democratic Socialists believe people have the ability to run the economy and society to meet their needs. Why this difference in perception? It is because Republicans arent afraid of socialism they are afraid of equality with people they see as inferior.

Republicans Are Aggressively Undermining Gay Marriage

An adult marrying another adult of the same sex? Outrageous the Lord will smite thee. An adult marrying a child of the opposite sex, on the other hand? Totally fine with God, apparently.

Such is the perverse logic of the always righteous Republicans, a number of whom recently sponsored legislation that would legalize common law marriage in Tennessee. While that sounds innocuous on the surface the legislation is a shameless attempt to undermine same-sex marriage, which has been legal across the US since 2015. The bills mastermind, the Tennessee state senator Janice Bowling, explained that the bill declares that the marriage between a man and a woman is not a creation of the state government or its statutes, it is a common law right. Bowling also noted that the bill provides an alternative form of marriage for those pastors and other individuals who have a conscientious objection to the current pathway to marriage in our law.

There hasbeen an avalanche of bills attempting to undermine the constitutional right to a safe and legal abortion and a horrifying and historic wave of anti-LGBT legislation. Bloomberg reports that Republican legislators have proposed at least 325 bills so far , with about 130 targeting transgender rights specifically. Thats already ahead of the 268 introduced last year, a previous record. A total of 27 made it into law in 2021, for the worst year in recent history for anti-LGBTQ legislation.

Republicans Help Pass House Gay Marriage Bill

Dozens of Republicans have sided with Democrats in the US House of Representatives to pass a bill that would boost legal protections for same-sex marriages.

Democrats have suggested the US Supreme Court could roll back gay marriage rights, but some Republican critics dismissed the bill as a gimmick.

America’s high court legalised same-sex marriage nationwide in 2015.

But last month it quashed a long-held constitutional right to abortion.

Prospects for the Respect for Marriage Act look less certain in the finely balanced Senate.

Some 47 Republicans joined all Democrats in voting for the measure by 267-157 on Tuesday after Republican leaders allowed party members to vote with their conscience.

More than three quarters of House Republicans opposed the bill on an issue that has long been a political purity test for social conservatives.

Critics warned the vote was a Democratic trap to force Republicans on the record with midterm elections looming in November.

Congressman Jim Jordan of Ohio said: “We are here for a political charade.”

Watch: Democrats arrested at abortion rights protest

Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Minority Whip Steve Scalise voted against it, but number three House Republican Elise Stefanik voted in favour.

Also voting yes was prominent Republican Liz Cheney, whose past opposition to same-sex marriage once caused a rift with her gay sister.

The bill would also provide legal protections for interracial marriages.

How Out Of Step Is The Republican Party On Gay Rights

The wedding wasnt the only reason conservatives targeted Rep. Denver Riggleman in a party convention , but it was the driving one. Which raises the question: How out of step with the nation is the Republican Party on same-sex rights?

Its an especially pertinent question on Monday, now that the Supreme Court, with the support of one of President Trumps nominees, just voted 6-3 that existing federal law protects gay and transgender workers from discrimination based on sex.

Thats a sea change in the legal landscape of protections for LGBTQ Americans. Before this ruling, in about half of the states, you could be legally fired for being gay or transgender. Now, you cant under the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which the court ruled extends to LGBTQ Americans because it prevents discrimination on the basis of sex.

But like the Republican voters in Virginia who ousted Riggleman in favor of social conservative Bob Good, there is an active wing of the Republican Party seeking to push back on the march toward expanding legal protections for gay and transgender Americans. And they have powerful allies.

The Trump administration opposed interpreting the Civil Rights Act to encompass LGBTQ workers. The leader of the conservative Judicial Crisis Network called the six justices who supported this ruling, one of whom was Trump appointee Neil M. Gorsuch, activists, implying the court got ahead of where the public is on the issue.

To mark the beginning of Pride Month this year, Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel did what party leaders do on these types of occasions: She sent out a tweet.

Happy #PrideMonth! she wrote, @GOP is proud to have doubled our LGBTQ support over the last 4 years, and we will continue to grow our big tent by supporting measures that promote fairness and balance protections for LGBTQ Americans and those with deeply held religious beliefs.

Inside the RNC, the missive barely registered. McDaniel, after all, had sent out a similar message in years past.

But outside the building, those 265 characters prompted immediate backlash. Not just from Democrats, who accused her of disingenuousness, but from social conservatives too who furiously dialed up McDaniel with complaints. Tony Perkins, leader of the Family Research Council, lambasted her in a scathing blog postand even encouraged people not to donate to the RNC. But the attacks, particularly from the evangelical right, were met with a shrug by the party.

A Gallup poll released earlier this year showed that by June 2021, 55 percent of Republicans supported same-sex marriage.

Confidence Interval: Qanon Is Not Going Anywhere

Because of this deep conservative antipathy for the liberal version of America, Joanne Freeman, a professor of history and American studies at Yale University, has compared the state of America today to the 1850s, right before the U.S. Civil War.

Mass violence in Congress seemed possible in 1850. Now, 171 years later, its in the national mindscape once again. And for good reason. The echoes of 1850 are striking. Were at a moment of extreme polarization when outcomes matter, sometimes profoundly, Freeman wrote in a recent essay in The New York Times.

The Republicans, she continued, whose ironclad grip on the Senate has dominated the federal government, feel entitled to that power and increasingly threatened they know theyre swimming against the demographic tide in a diversifying nation. They have proven themselves ready and eager for minority rule voter suppression centered on people of color is on the rise and has been for some time. And some of them are willing to protect what they deem right with threats of violence.

At the same time, Republican voters have stuck with the party despite its recent shift toward move overt and aggressive anti-democratic behavior. This stuff seems not a deal-breaker to the vast majority of Republican voters, said Zimmer.

In his inaugural speech, Biden said, We have learned again that democracy is precious. Democracy is fragile. And at this hour, my friends, democracy has prevailed.

Why Do So Many Hate George Soros

Filmmaker Jesse Dylan, the eldest son of Bob Dylan, tells Haaretz how he tried to get the real story on Jewish billionaire philanthropist George Soros whos loathed by far-right forces around the world

Nazi collaborator, the worlds biggest drug dealer, a traitor to the United States, one of the most evil people in the world, even Satans seed. To judge by some of the epithets hurled at him over the years, Jewish-American billionaire George Soros may certainly be one of the most hated people in the world.

Large swaths of Europe and America view him as evil incarnate, sure that hes putting entire countries at risk. They hold him responsible for the financial collapse of a long list of countries including Thailand, Malasia, Indonesia, Japan and Russia.

A few years ago, the government of Hungary, his country of birth, even launched an anti-immigration campaign featuring posters of Soros and the slogan Dont let Soros have the last laugh. The photo of the billionaire that was plastered all over the country showed a smile you wouldnt want to bump into in a dark alley.

These call to mind a cartoon that doesnt appear in the film one that was once depicting Soros as pulling the strings behind people like Ehud Barak, former Barak aide Eldad Yaniv and Meni Naftali, a former caretaker of the prime ministers residence who claimed abuse by Sara Netanyahu.

Why Do Republicans And Born

Why do Republicans in general and born-again Christians in particular hate poor people?

After all if you check the statistics you find that poor people in the United States take a minute share of the wealth while contributing their endless grinding labor to all the jobs the rest of us dont or will not accomplish.

Its bad enough they live difficult lives, but the cant wait to get in your face about Jesus right wing seem to believe the Republic will only survive if the poor have no healthcare coverage.

Mike Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas and slobbering Fox News Republican cheerleader, could have taken up any cause. He chose to represent the cabals assembled to repeal the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act which has come to be known as Obamacare.

The convention itself spent zero time discussing the differences among provide, promote, protect, and ensure, but 225 years later Dave thinks hes found a crack into which he can insert his free market theology.

So why do the Born Agains need to oppose healthcare for the poor? Why dont Republicans take up in favor of a system whereby everyone can obtain healthcare without going hat in hand to the Real Life Center in Tyrone where they probably dont do heart transplants or dialysis?

Well, first of all, the one group is tied mindlessly to the other. And for the other, the answer, and you will find this all through the Founders thinking, is moneyed interests.

Homosexuality Gender And Religion

Meet the House Republicans Who Donât Hate Gay Rights â Mother Jones

Over the past two decades, there has been a dramatic increase in public acceptance of homosexuality, as well as same-sex marriage. Still, the partisan divide on the acceptance of homosexuality has widened.

In views of challenges facing women, a majority of Americans say women continue to confront obstacles that make it more difficult for them to get ahead than men. Opinions about the obstacles facing women are divided along gender lines, but the partisan gap is wider than the gender gap.

Most Americans now say that it is not necessary to believe in God to be moral and have good values this is the first time a majority has expressed this view in a measure dating back to 2002. While Republicans views have held steady over this period, an increasing share of Democrats say belief in God is not necessary in order to be a moral person.

American Views Of Transgender People: The Impact Of Politics Personal Contact And Religion

As the Supreme Court examines cases it has already heard this term about the rights of gay and transgender people, the American public in the latest Economist/YouGov poll are for the most part tolerant and supportive of transgender employment rights. However, Republicans take different positions.

The overall public supports laws prohibiting discrimination in hiring and employment on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, with Republicans closely divided.

More than one in three people know someone who is transgender, and the probability of this is even higher among Democrats and younger adults. Those with personal contact are more likely to believe there is a great deal or a fair amount of discrimination against transgender people. Half of Republicans and 88 percent of Democrats say there is a fair amount or a great deal of discrimination against transgender people.

One in five adults believes employers should be able to fire transgender workers who wear work clothes that match their gender identity. About three times that percentage disagree. Republicans are more closely divided on this question: a third say employers should be able to fire those employees, while 44 percent say that should not be allowed.

There appears to be greater acceptance of female to male transitions than male to female ones. Men generally accept a female to male as male , but also believe that someone transitioning male to female is still male .
