Mr. Trump has also told allies that he believes the leading Democratic candidate, Representative Tim Ryan, will be a difficult opponent in the general election and that he thinks Mr. Vance can beat him. Mr. Trump has been increasingly looking toward a prospective 2024 presidential campaign of his own, and he is said to see Mr. Vance as a reliable ally in the Senate on issues he cares about, like trade and immigration.
And a last-minute effort to stop Mr. Trumps endorsement that included releasing an internal Mandel campaign poll appears to have backfired. The survey suggested that Mr. Trumps endorsement would give Mr. Vance only a five-percentage-point bump in support, which Mr. Trump took as an affront, the Republican familiar with the former presidents thinking said.
Polls Closed In Illinois Oklahoma
Voting has ended in the primary battles for public office in Illinois and Oklahoma on Tuesday.
In Oklahoma, Republican Kevin Stitt, who was a political outsider when he won the governorship in 2018, is expected to cruise to victory. Stitt has been endorsed by former President Donald Trump, and has been an ardent crime-and-punishment conservative. He backs permitless carry of firearms and reinstating the death penalty.
Illinois’ main event is the GOP gubernatorial primary, where the winner will face Democratic incumbent J.B. Pritzker.
Darren Bailey, a state lawmaker who has resisted COVID-19 restrictions, is facing Richard Irving, a former prosecutor who was previously elected as the first Black mayor of Chicagos largest suburb.

Early Nomination Contests Didnt Involve Primaries

Intraparty disputes over who should be nominated for the presidency are as old as the republic itself. But the modern system of determining nominees through a series of state primary elections is essentially an innovation of the 1970s. Before that, parties deployed a wide range of methods.
The Democratic-Republicans, the dominant political party of the early 19th century, used to select candidates via a vote of the partys members in Congress.That method let it control the White House for 20 years, and lasted until the rivalry between John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson made the party splinter into the Democrats and the Whigs in the aftermath of the 1824 election.
Back in 1836, in the early days of Whig versus Democrat competition, the Whig Party even tried nominating several candidates simultaneously in their bid to block Martin Van Buren from succeeding Jackson in the White House.
In most Northern states, William Henry Harrison appeared on the general election ballot, while Hugh White got the nod in most Southern ones. And Massachusetts Whigs went with Daniel Webster , while Willie Magnum was nominated in South Carolina.
But it did not work. Van Buren won the election, and in subsequent contests the Whigs emulated the Democrats, picking a single nominee at a broad national convention with representatives from all states.

President Donald Trump recycled his own âThree Stoogesâ insult against a trio of Republican Party members running against him in the upcoming 2020 GOP presidential primary.
Trump hurled another âThe Three Stoogesâ remark at former Republican South Carolina governor Mark Sanford Monday after he officially entered the race and became the third GOP challenger to Trump in 2020. Trump previously lumped Sanford in with former Illinois congressman Joe Walsh and former Massachusetts Governor Bill Weld in late August when the president first compared them to the classic comedic trio, when Sanford began claiming Republicans were ârunning for the hillsâ to escape Trumpâs âlies.â
On Monday, Trump again brought up the June 2009 story of how Sanford engaged in an extramarital affair which ultimately led to his resignation from office. Although Sanford later was elected to Congress in 2013, the story of his Argentina affair and his bogus claim of being on an âAppalachian Trailâ hike made him the focus of jokes and ridicule which he has since tried to own.
In late April, Trump first lobbed the âThree Stoogesâ insult at Sanford, Weld and Walsh as they all lined themselves up to primary the president next year. He labeled all three âbadâ while also first calling out Sanford for the scandal.
In 2018, Sanford owned up to the 2009 scandal in an interview with NBC News after he was defeated by a Trump-backed Republican opponent for congress.

Like the other Republican candidates, she has spoken out against critical race theory and what she says is the sexualization of children in Michigan schools.
She has also been endorsed by the powerful DeVos family in west Michigan, Right to Life of Michigan, the Michigan Chamber of Commerce and the Police Officers Association of Michigan.
Ryan Kelley: Kelly is a former Allendale Township planning commissioner who gained a following in 2020 when he protested the removal of a Confederate statue in his hometown and organized a large anti-Whitmer protest at the Michigan Capitol that resulted in armed demonstrators entering the building.
Kelley urged federal authorities to “arrest” Whitmer for her COVID-19 policies, which he is now campaigning against. Hes called for a forensic audit of the 2020 election and was outside the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6 riots.
Positioning himself as an unapologetic conservative, Kelley told Bridge Michigan in April that he won’t change his “tune in order to pander for votes.”

Jr Majewski Gop Nominee Ohio 9th Congressional District
“When everything started to happen…we all left. I was responsible for 60-70 people at the Capitol. I had multiple people get injured but I made sure they made it back to our hotel. It was a terrible experience,” Majewski said in an interview with Toledo TV station WTOL in April 2021. “It was one that was supposed to be great.”
But as a candidate, Majewski’s record has come under scrutiny for other reasons. He claimed that he served the U.S. Air Force in Afghanistan. Military records obtained by the Associated Press revealed that he never deployed to Afghanistan. According to the AP report, Majewski’s campaign “did not directly address questions about his claim of deployment to Afghanistan” when asked about his records.
A subsequent AP report noted that his campaign claimed that he was demoted and punished after a “brawl,” but military records show that he was, in fact, demoted and punished for drunk driving on a U.S. air base in Japan. In a statement, Majewski acknowledged that he had been punished for drunk driving but did not say why his campaign had attributed his demotion to a brawl, according to the report.
Last month, the National Republican Congressional Committee, withdrew ads for Majewski.
Republicans Hope To Build A ‘red Wave’ On Tuesday
Republicans were banking on Trump’s Iowa visit to help stoke a red wave of enthusiasm and discontent that could help them wipe the board of Democrats, lifting lesser-known down-ballot candidates such as Republican attorney general candidate Brenna Bird and auditor candidate Todd Halbur.
An October Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll shows Reynolds handily leading her Democratic opponent, businesswoman Deidre DeJear. The same poll shows Grassley with his narrowest lead since he was first elected to the U.S. Senate and squeaky tight contests in two of four U.S. House districts.

Grassley also tossed some political red meat for the crowd.
“Im not going to give up on trying to get political bias out of the FBI,” he said, drawing his biggest cheer of the night. “And Im not going to give up on my investigation of Hunter Biden and other Bidens.”
Iowa Democrats were critical of Trump and Iowa Republicans who appeared with him.

They Dont Think Its His Turn
For months, Trump has worked to cast himself as the automatic front-runner in a contested 2024 primary while asking his own pollsters to identify whether DeSantis or others pose a serious threat.
In perhaps his most direct jab at DeSantis yet, the former President reposted a video to his Truth Social site this week in which former Fox News host Megyn Kelly confidently predicted that Trump would emerge on top in a contest against DeSantis. Kelly repeatedly sparred with Trump during his 2016 presidential campaign, both as a debate moderator and prime-time commentator, but in the video shared by Trump she suggested the former Presidents base remains firmly behind him.
You really think the hardcore MAGA is going to abandon Trump for DeSantis? Theyre not. They like DeSantis, but they dont think its his turn, Kelly says in the clip, adding that the hardcore Trump faithful is unshakable if forced to choose, they will choose Trump.
While some Republicans agree with Kelly, others are looking for new blood, exhausted by Trumps unending legal battles and the media spectacle surrounding him.
But in conversations with donors, DeSantis allies say he is far less dismissive these days when questioned about a White House bid than he was six months ago something Trump allies have brought to his attention, further irritating him.

Ohio’s Us Senate Race Candidates
Vance is a venture capitalist, veteran, and author who rose to prominence following the publication of his book, “Hillbilly Elegy,” which delves into Vance’s childhood and upbringing in Ohio.
Vance won the Republican nomination in a crowded seven-candidate GOP primary race, winning 32.2% of the overall vote. Vance, who received an endorsement from President Donald Trump in the run-up to the primary election, previously compared Trump to “America’s Hitler” in private messages with his former roommate.
At a rally in September, the former president made fun of Vance and accused him of showering him with flattery in exchange for the president’s support.
“J.D. is kissing my ass he wants my support so much,” Trump said in Youngstown, Ohio.
Ryan, Vance’s general election challenger, has represented Ohio districts in the US House of Representatives since 2003. He represented the state’s 17th Congressional District for 10 years before switching to the 13th Congressional District in 2013 following redistricting.
Ryan handily defeated the two other Democratic candidates in Ohio’s primary election, bringing in 69.6% of the overall vote. In 2020, prior to running for the Senate, Ryan ran for the Democratic presidential nomination. His presidential campaign failed to gain traction, ultimately leading him to withdraw from the race and run for re-election in the US House.

At least 10 Republican candidates who won primaries for statewide or federal office this year have claimed they were in Washington, D.C., on , when supporters of former President Donald Trump marched to the Capitol to interrupt the peaceful transition of power and the ensuing riot eventually turned violent. Five people died in connection with the riot, including a police officer. Another four officers died by suicide in the days, weeks and months after the assault on the Capitol.
All 10 non-incumbent candidates have denied or cast doubt on the 2020 election results. Three of the 10 candidates could win congressional seats in November, which would take them from election-denying protesters to sitting members of Congress. Another stands to become the chief election official in Arizona.
Democrats have spent little time or money focused on ads highlighting the Jan. 6 activities of these candidates. According to the ad-tracking firm, AdImpact, just $2.7 million out of $163 million of broadcast TV ad dollars went to House races where a candidate was at or near the Capitol on Jan. 6. In many cases, Democratic groups actually tried to boost some of the election-denying candidates during the primary season, calculating that they would be weaker opponents for Democrats in the general election.

Hageman Celebrates Win Over Cheney In Wyoming Gop House Primary
Hageman, in her victory speech, said the result showed that Republicans will “hold our elected officials accountable for their actions” an allusion to Cheney’s tangles with Trump.
“What Wyoming has shown today is that, while it may not be easy, we can dislodge entrenched politicians who believe theyve risen above the people they are supposed to represent,” Hageman told her supporters.
On one level, Wyoming is all but certain to trade out one Republican congresswoman for another in November. But this particular race proved an epic clash between the new and old establishments of the Republican Party, as well as competing visions of the future of the GOP and the republic.
With her parents in the audience, Cheney spoke about her deep ties to the Republican Party but said, “I love my country more.”
Cheney’s battles with Trump cost her her spot in House Republican leadership last year and now her seat, but it also provided her with an elevated platform, a monster fundraising profile and the respect of some Democrats who reviled her father.
The split-screen images of Cheney losing popularity at home, while her profile rose nationally have sparked questions about whether she will seek the presidency or slip into another role that keeps her at the forefront of the bipartisan anti-Trump set.
In her concession speech, Cheney compared herself to Abraham Lincoln, a Republican who lost a Senate race before he won the presidency, ended slavery and won the Civil War.
Casten Defeats Newman In Illinois
A Democratic primary race a rare contest between two incumbents that has been fraught with drama and heartbreak has been decided in Illinois.
Rep. Sean Casten defeated Rep. Marie Newman, who has been the subject of an ethics investigation.
Redistricting had forced the two incumbent Democrats to run against each other, though the winner has stayed on the sidelines in recent weeks.
Casten stopped campaigning earlier this month when his 17-year-old daughter Gwen died.
