Trump Should Not Run For President In 2024 Majority Of Americans Say
As former President Donald Trump considers launching another bid for the White House, more than six in 10 Americans do not want him to run in 2024, according to a new PBS NewsHour/NPR/Marist poll. And while Trumps possession of more than 10,000 government documents at his Florida home seems not to have changed the minds of his steady supporters, a plurality of Americans think he has done something illegal.
The level of support for another Trump campaign remains virtually unchanged from December 2020, the month after he lost the presidential election and weeks before a mob of his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol in an effort to stop the certification of the Electoral College votes.
His numbers dont move. Theyre locked in, said Lee Miringoff, the director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion. The good thing for former President Trump is his numbers dont drop. The bad thing is hes only talking about a third of the electorate who are in his corner.

Thats not a great place to launch an election campaign, he added.
Just 28 percent of independents believe Trump should run again, this poll found, while two-thirds say the former president should sit out the next election. According to 2020 exit polling, 41 percent of independents had voted for Trumps reelection, suggesting a significant cratering of support since.

Sen Marco Rubio Of Florida
Like Cruz, Rubio would enter the 2024 presidential race with heightened name ID and experience from his 2016 run. One of Rubios biggest challenges, though, could be his fellow Floridians. If DeSantis and fellow Sen. Rick Scott run, there could be just one ticket out of Florida, a Republican strategist said.
Rubio, 49, is married to Jeanette Dousdebes and they have four children. He graduated from the University of Florida and University of Miami School of Law and was speaker of the Florida House of Representatives before running for U.S. Senate in 2010.

Michigan Gov Rick Snyder
Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder refused to endorse Trump before Michigans primary back in March 8.
Snyder more recently has signaled that he plans on staying out of the presidential race.
Ive stayed out of the whole thing, and Im going to continue to, Snyder said in an interview with the Detroit News Editorial Board on June 2. Ive got important things I want to work on in Michigan.

But there is also one thing they are avoiding: Nearly all of the prospective candidates have declined to say whether they will challenge Trump directly should he decide to run.
Like most political professionals, they are waiting to see what happens.
“I don’t know that he’s going to run,” former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie told CNN. “I don’t know whether I’m going to run.”
The list of possible non-Trump candidates includes former aides and advisers a sprinkling of GOP governors , and some Republican senators .
All would be underdogs to Trump, who leads early Republican polling ahead of 2024.
“You get a lot of people who want Trump to run again,” said Sarah Longwell, an anti-Trump Republican strategist who is conducting a series of focus groups of GOP voters. “If Trump runs, he freezes the field for most of these candidates, and they don’t run.”
And how many candidates will there be if Trump doesn’t run?
“So many,” Longwell said. “A wide open field.”
Sen Tom Cotton Of Arkansas
Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas has been busy giving speeches, endorsing candidates and recruiting people for what looks like a presidential campaign operation, be it for 2024 or beyond.
During a September visit to Iowa, where he campaigned for local candidates, Cotton told Fox News he didnt want to speculate on far off elections, but is focused on GOP efforts to win back Congress.
Those races and further off from that will work themselves out when we get there, Cotton said.

House Republicans, including Rep. Jim Banks , the chair of far-right Republican Study Committee, traveled to Donald Trumps Bedminster, New Jersey golf resort one day after the FBI raided his Mar-a-Lago home to urge him to announce his 2024 run for president.
Congressman Banks is a far-right Republican who spread Trumps Big Lie, the false claims about the 2020 election, objected to the certification of the election results, and falsely claimed Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi was to blame for the January 6 insurrection.

Former Us Ambassador To The United Nations Nikki Haley
Haley, 49, stands out in the potential pool of 2024 Republican candidates by her resume. She has experience as an executive as the former governor of South Carolina and foreign policy experience from her time as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.
Haley was a member of the Republican Partys 2010 tea party class. A former South Carolina state representative, her long shot gubernatorial campaign saw its fortunes improve after she was endorsed by Sarah Palin. Haley rocketed from fourth to first just days after the endorsement, and she went on to clinch the nomination and become her states first female and first Indian-American governor.
As governor, she signed a bill removing the Confederate flag from the state Capitol following the white supremacist attack at the Emanuel African Methodist Church in Charleston. She left office in 2017 to join the Trump administration as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, and Quinnipiac poll found she was at one point the most popular member of Trumps foreign policy team.
I think that shes done a pretty masterful job in filling out her resume, said Robert Oldendick, a professor and director of graduate studies at the University of South Carolinas department of political science.
Haley criticized Trump following the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol by his supporters, saying she was disgusted by his conduct. Oldendick said he thought her pretty pointed criticism of the president will potentially cause some problems.

Namely, many Americans, including Democrats, are really down on the idea of President Biden seeking a second term, while former President Donald Trump continues to dominate the news cycle. A sizable portion of Americans say they dont want Biden or Trump to have a second term, but is there, uh a path for anyone who isnt Trump or Biden in 2024?
Lets tackle this chat in two parts:
OK, first up. Is there a Democrat who can take on Biden?
alex : I dont think so, Sarah, especially if Trump is the nominee. If Trump announces that hes running for a second term, I think: 1) Biden will run again, and 2) there wont be a damaging primary to take him down.
What Democrat is going to take Biden on against Trump? Democrats will coalesce around the nominee who can beat Trump, and Biden has already proved that he can.
alex: Right, Nathaniel. I just dont see notable Democrats wanting to participate in a messy, protracted primary against the sitting president. It would be a terrible look for the party.

No Evidence Election Was Compromised Cybersecurity Agency Says
The dust-up in Wayne County unfolded amid a nationwide effort by Trump and many of his GOP allies to push back on the results of the election. The outgoing president has claimed widespread voting fraud, without evidence, in the several of the states that he lost, including Michigan.
On Wednesday, the president reiterated his claim that a giant scam robbed him of a victory in the state. I win Michigan! .
He and his allies, however, have repeatedly failed to produce evidence supporting their allegations of election fraud.
That failure has spelled trouble in court for his campaign to get the election results overturned. In Michigan, an appeals court on Monday unanimously ruled against a Republican bid to invalidate the vote in Wayne County. The decision backed a lower-court ruling that found the allegations to be simply not credible.
And the legal setbacks for Trump havent been confined to Michigans borders, either. As NPRs Pam Fessler explains, similar efforts challenging the vote in Pennsylvania, Georgia and Wisconsin have failed to gain traction.

Rep. Don Bacon , who has previously said he wont support Trump if he runs again, publicly told reporters that he hopes former Vice President Mike Pence runs for president after he met with the Republican Study Committee this week.
Above Stefanik in House GOP leadership, its all about the midterms. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy whos had his own challenging moments with Trump and Minority Whip Steve Scalise argued that their focus is on November. Asked about endorsing Trump above all others, McCarthy chuckled at the question, then said Im focused on this election.
Lets get through November. Im sure therell be a lot of talk about 2024 right after that, echoed Scalise.
Others, like Rep. Drew Ferguson , wouldnt engage with the question until Trump makes his bid official, despite the myriad reports suggesting Trump may soon make his move.
I have not heard anything about him, Ferguson said.
Reminded that Trump is openly entertaining the idea in interviews, Ferguson, who is making an early bid for the majority whip role next year, replied: Lets see what happens.
Some senior Republicans indicated that the political landscape could be vastly different by the time the race comes around: Trumps influence may have waned further. He may be kneecapped by a series of blownmidterm endorsements, a record hes catered to more carefully in recent months as he tries to present his win-loss record in a positive light.

Across the country, candidates who support Donald Trumps false claims about the 2020 election are running for office, promising to replace fellow-Republicans who went along with certifying last years results. Republicans are favored to take back both houses of Congress in 2022 and tighten their grip on state houses, raising urgent questions about whether the Party, which largely proved unwilling to support Donald Trumps push to overturn the election last year, might be more amenable to doing so in 2024.
One of those candidates is Don Bolduc, a retired Army general and the only Republican who has declared his candidacy for next years U.S. Senate race in New Hampshire against the Democratic incumbent, Maggie Hassan. Establishment Republicans in Washington are hoping that New Hampshires governor, Chris Sununu, will also challenge Hassan, in part because Bolduc has firmly attached himself to Trump, praising the former President frequently and signing a letter with other former military leaders claiming election fraud. Trump has not yet endorsed a candidate in the race, but he recently released a statement praising Bolducs attacks on General Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under Trump and Biden.

Sen Ted Cruz Of Texas
Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, the last Republican candidate to drop out in 2016 before Trump claimed the nomination, has also said he is waiting to see how things play out.
A lot depends on Trump, he said.
During an appearance on CBS’ Face The Nation, Cruz said “I have no idea what’s going to happen in 2024,” and added that Trump “is going to have to make a choice, first of all, whether he’s going to run or not. I think if he chose to run, he would be very, very formidable.”
The Texas conservative added that, “I can tell you that when I ran in 2016, we came incredibly close. I came in second. There’s a long history of runner-ups becoming the next nominee.”
Others Who Didnt Make The Ballot
Austin Chenge: The Grand Rapids-based businessman, who faced eligibility issues, dropped out of the race in March and endorsed Rinke.
Chenge had released a series of proposals to end voting machine contracts, cancel Black History Month and make Michigan a constitutional carry for firearms by eliminating the need for a concealed pistol permit.
Bob Scott: The Howell-area substitute teacher did not submit signatures to qualify for the GOP primary ballot but is considering an independent run.
Scott described himself as a strong supporter of the First and Second Amendments to the U.S. Constitution, which protect free speech and firearm rights.
Evan Space: The Lansing resident did not submit signatures to qualify for the GOP primary ballot for the second time in as many cycles. He also failed to make the ballot in 2018.
Space had leaned into his name, promising to establish space exploration launch sites and related college programs. Among his other novel proposals, Space said he would appoint a lieutenant governor to run the Upper Peninsula and treat it more like an independent state.
