Michael R. Bloomberg announced on Sunday that he would run for president in 2020, bringing his enormous wealth and eclectic political biography into the tumultuous Democratic primary and seeking to win over skeptical liberal voters by presenting himself as a multibillion-dollar threat to President Trump.
Mr. Bloomberg, a former Republican who has expressed reservations about his adopted partys leftward drift, said in a statement that he would offer a pragmatic option to voters in a campaign to unseat a president who represents an existential threat to our country and our values.
Defeating Donald Trump and rebuilding America is the most urgent and important fight of our lives. And Im going all in, Mr. Bloomberg said. I offer myself as a doer and a problem solver not a talker. And someone who is ready to take on the tough fights and win.
Mr. Bloomberg, 77, faces immense obstacles to winning the Democratic nomination, starting with his own political baggage that includes a complex array of business entanglements, a history of making and a record of championing law enforcement policies that disproportionately targeted black and Latino men with invasive searches.
One Final Reason To Believe Bloomberg Can Win: He Thinks He Can
So here is the thing about Mike Bloomberg: Hes not a guy who likes to lose. Before finallypulling the trigger and deciding to run for the White House, he had waffled on the idea for years. If Bloomberg is running now, its because he thinks hes got a path.
Admittedly, its an unusual path. Hes flooding the television airwaves in a moment when digital is considered the strategy of the future. Hes skipping the first four primary states and going straight for the delegate-rich votes. While Democrats have tended to follow the Michelle Obama model , Bloombergs camp has no problem hitting back at Trump as a pathological liar about everything, including his fake hair, his obesity, and his spray-on tan. His social media strategy is often downrightweird.
Bloombergs theory of the election is unconventional, but if it works, it works. And there are signs its working.
Mike Bloomberg To Spend At Least $100 Million In Florida To Benefit Joe Biden
Former New York mayor Mike Bloomberg plans to spend at least $100 million in Florida to help elect Democrat Joe Biden, a massive late-stage infusion of cash that could reshape the presidential contest in a costly toss-up state central to President Trumps reelection hopes.
Bloomberg made the decision to focus his final election spending on Florida last week, after news reports that Trump had considered spending as much as $100 million of his own money in the final weeks of the campaign, Bloombergs advisers said. Presented with several options on how to make good on an earlier promise to help elect Biden, Bloomberg decided that a narrow focus on Florida was the best use of his money.
The presidents campaign has long treated the state, which Trump now calls home, as a top priority, and his advisers remain confident in his chances given strong turnout in 2016 and 2018 that gave Republicans narrow winning margins in statewide contests.
Voting starts on Sept. 24 in Florida, so the need to inject real capital in that state quickly is an urgent need, Bloomberg adviser Kevin Sheekey said. Mike believes that by investing in Florida, it will allow campaign resources and other Democratic resources to be used in other states, in particular the state of Pennsylvania.
Save NYC instead, he added.
The spending will focus mostly on television and digital ads, in English and Spanish.

Michael Bloombergs debut 2020 campaign ad touts that he took charge of New York in the wake of 9/11.
What Bloomberg doesnt mention: He leaned heavily on an endorsement from Rudy Giuliani, the then-New York mayor who is now President Donald Trumps personal attorney, to win that post. Bloomberg trumpeted his support in TV advertising and direct mail, chastising his Democratic opponent for being no friend of Rudy Giuliani.
Giuliani is just one of many skeletons in Bloombergs partisan closet. As he pursues the Democratic presidential nomination, hell have to explain the millions hes spent putting Republicans into office, including contributions backing more than a dozen current and former members of Congress.
The billionaire businessman, who has switched parties several times throughout his political career, endorsed George W. Bushs 2004 reelection campaign, contributed to John McCain and even held a fundraiser for a House GOP member as recently as last year.
And thats not all. Beneficiaries of his largesse include former Sen. Orrin Hatch , a vigorous Trump defender, and Senate Appropriations Chairman Richard Shelby of Alabama, who once chaired the Senate Banking Committee.
Then theres former Sen. Scott Brown . Bloomberg endorsed and held a fundraiser for Brown when he ran against Elizabeth Warren in 2012.

In Georgia, Howard Franklin has similar expectations. He was a senior adviser in the state to Bloomberg’s presidential campaign, and he is optimistic that Bloomberg will fulfill his pledge.
“I think he did set the bar high,” Franklin said.
To make Georgia truly competitive, Franklin says, Bloomberg should make an eight-figure investment.
Georgia is another state with a lot at stake, as a longtime GOP stronghold that appears close at the presidential level, along with two U.S. Senate races due to a special election and competitive U.S. House races in the Atlanta suburbs. It’s also felt the brunt of the two major crises of the year, the pandemic and unrest over racial justice.
Bloomberg is getting pitches like that all day, every day.
Although there’s no evidence yet that he is spending all that he promised, that doesn’t mean Bloomberg can’t or won’t in the remaining days of the campaign, now fewer than 100.

WASHINGTON Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is transferring $18 million left in the accounts of his now-defunct presidential campaign to the Democratic National Committee and forgoing, for now, creating his own independent political group to help Democrats in November.
While we considered creating our own independent entity to support the nominee and hold the President accountable, this race is too important to have many competing groups with good intentions but that are not coordinated and united in strategy and execution, Bloombergs campaign said in a memo to the DNC. The dynamics of the race have also fundamentally changed, and it is critically important that we all do everything we can to support our eventual nominee and scale the Democratic Partys general election efforts.
The funds will be put towards the DNC’s battleground buildup program, to hire data and operations staffers, among other efforts, in a dozen states that will be important in the general election.
Bloomberg will also offer to transfer campaign field offices the billionaire’s campaign set up and paid for to local state Democratic Parties as in-kind contributions. His staff, some of which were planning to transfer to work for Bloomberg’s independent entity in six battleground states, are all being laid off. They will be paid through the first week of April and have full benefits through the end of April.

On smaller-scale issues, Bloomberg usually takes the side of development as well. He favors the demolition of Admiral’s Row to build a supermarket parking lot. However, Bloomberg has occasionally sided with preservation, most notably in vetoing landmark revocation for the Austin Nichols warehouse. This move was widely applauded by architectural historians. The City Council overruled the veto shortly thereafter, however.

I funded the races in Virginia where there was a background check issue for guns, which is one of my real issues, and it went from red to blue. I funded 24 House contests the last time, in 2018. Twenty-one of them won and that flipped the House from red to blue and put Pelosi in charge.
