Ted Budd defeated Pat McCrory, , and eleven other candidates in the Republican primary on May 17, 2022, for U.S. Senate in North Carolina. Incumbent Richard Burr didn’t run for re-election.

The primary was among the first U.S. Senate races in which former President Donald Trump endorsed a candidate. Intelligencers Ed Kilgore wrote, a particularly big deal for Trump, whose midterm strategy is to show his clout in both primary and general-election races.

Budd, the owner of a gun range and store in Rural Hall, represented North Carolina’s 13th Congressional District since 2017. Trump endorsed Budd in June 2021, and Budd focused on his support for Trump and Trump’s record. Budd’s website said, “Ted was elected to Congress along with President Donald Trump in 2016 and has established a strong, conservative record supporting efforts to secure our borders and stand up for America First policies.”

McCrory was governor from 2013 to 2017. Before that, McCrory was the mayor of Charlotte from 1995 to 2009. McCrory focused on economic issues and highlighted his record as governor. McCrory’s website said he turned around North Carolina’s economy from the fourth highest unemployment rate in the country to one of the highest for job growth.

Budds campaign called McCrory a career politician and criticized McCrory’s electoral performance.

North Carolina Primary Election Results

First-term U.S. Rep. Madison Cawthorn has conceded to North Carolina state Sen. Chuck Edwards in the Republican congressional primary.

Luke Ball, a spokesperson for Cawthorns campaign, told The Associated Press late Tuesday that Cawthorn had conceded. The AP hasnt called the race. A fast-food franchise owner, Edwards would advance to the November election against Democrat Jasmine Beach-Ferrara.

Cawthorn vaulted to national prominence after winning the seat in 2020 at age 25. A firebrand and vocal supporter of former President Donald Trump, he had made unforced political and personal errors that led top Republican leaders in North Carolina to turn against him. U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis said Cawthorn was an embarrassment to his constituents.

Cawthorn faced negative publicity for speeding and gun violations, as well as for calling Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a thug. And his initial decision to run for reelection elsewhere only to switch back to the 11th District didnt sit well with many locals.

The states primaries are May 17th. Follow The New Yorkers full coverage of the 2022 midterms for the latest results and analysis.

The 2022 midterm elections will be a referendum on the current President, Joe Biden, and his predecessor, Donald J. Trumpas well as a profound test of American democracy. The midterm primaries began on March 1st, in Texas, and will continue through the fall, allowing voters in each state to narrow the field in races for the House, Senate, and governors mansions before the campaigns culminate in the general election, on November 8th. Although Biden wont be on the ballot in November, Americans judgment of his first two years in office, when he faced a resurgent pandemic, the highest inflation in decades, and deep divisions within his own party, will be reflected in the results. The midterms will also provide the latest evidence of whether Trump, the man Biden drove from office, has asserted complete control over the Republican Partyand is succeeding in his continuing effort to undermine trust in elections. If candidates who endorse Trumps false claim that the 2020 election was stolen win control of state offices, Trump and his supporters could be poised to challenge the outcome of the 2024 Presidential election.

The New Yorker will publish election results, as reported by the Associated Press, as well as news coverage and commentary, throughout the 2022 campaign.

Who Can Vote In The Primary

Anyone who is registered to vote in North Carolina can vote in the primary. But there are some restrictions. People who are registered with a specific political party can only vote in that partys primary. A registered Republican, for example, can only vote in the Republican primary.

Theres a big exception. Unaffiliated voters can pick which partys primary they want to vote in. But and its a big but they can only pick one. So, for example, an unaffiliated voter who wants to weigh in on the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate and the Republican primary for their local U.S. House contest cant do both. If they choose to vote for a Democratic Senate candidate, theyll only be able to vote for other Democrats in the primary.

Thats different from a general election, where any registered voter can vote for anyone on the ballot.

Nc Republicans Vote To Delay 2022 Primary Elections

Raleigh, N.C. North Carolinas primary elections would move from May to June under a bill advanced by state Republicans Wednesday in a pair of party-line votes.

Gov. Roy Cooper has expressed concern with the bill and may veto it. And with Democrats already voting against the measure en masse, he’d likely be able to sustain that veto, rendering the planned changes moot.

But for now House Bill 605 lays out this proposed schedule for the primaries:

  • Candidate filing would run from March 24 to April 1.
  • The primaries would be June 7.

If Cooper vetoes the bill, and if the veto is sustained, the primaries would go back to May 17.

The idea behind the delay is to leave more time for an ongoing court fight over North Carolina’s congressional, state House and state Senate election districts.

A number of progressive groups sued over those maps, arguing that the General Assembly’s Republican majority gerrymandered themselves extreme advantages last year in drawing the districts. State Supreme Court arguments in the case are scheduled Feb. 2, and the high court will decide the matter some time after that.

The Supreme Court had already moved the primaries from March to May to make time for the case, but the State Board of Elections has said it needs districts in place by Feb. 18 to make the May election timetable.

Five Senate Democrats missed Wednesday’s vote, as did two Republicans.

Rep Ted Budd Wins Senate Republican Primary In North Carolina

HENDERSONVILLE, North CarolinaRep. Ted Budd swept to victory in the North Carolina Republican primary for the U.S. Senate on May 17.

With 45 percent of the precincts reporting, Decision Desk HQ projected Budd as the winner with 56.5 percent of the vote at 7:56 p.m.

Budd, a firebrand conservative whose campaign focused on fighting the ideological left, scored an endorsement from former president Donald Trump. His platform included fighting corruption from Big Tech companies, creating jobs, stopping socialism, and letting parents control their childs education.

McCrory, a former North Carolina governor, built his campaign on his past political successes. He ran on a conservative platform including lower taxes, pro-life policies, support for police, stronger election security, and defending constitutional rights to Congress.

Budds win was a victory for the power of Trumps endorsements to shape the future of the Republican Party. As the 2022 midterms approached, Trump played the role of kingmaker, lending his endorsement to many Republican candidates.

Often, a candidates support for Trumps claims that the 2020 presidential election was rigged played a key role in whether the president chose to lend his endorsement.

Both McCrory and Budd ran a race filled with attack ads. It remains to be seen whether the mud slung will slow Budd in the general election race against Cheri Beasley, the Democratic primary winner.

The controversial Republican was defeated by state Sen. Chuck Edwards.

Rep. Madison Cawthorn lost the Republican primary for his House seat in North Carolina on Tuesday halting the young, pro-Trump congressmans rise after a series of scandals plagued his short tenure in Washington.

Cawthorns campaign said he conceded the race to state Sen. Chuck Edwards, who rose to the top of a packed Republican primary and secured endorsements from North Carolinas most powerful Republicans, including Sen. Thom Tillis. A super PAC that had previously backed Tillis ran ads targeting Cawthorns lies and quoted a newspaper columnist calling him an attention-seeking embarrassment.

Cawthorn campaigned aggressively, blaming his woes on RINOs and the mainstream media. But voters were unwilling to give him a second chance following Cawthorns political stumbles, from calling Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a thug to alleging hed been invited to orgies by Washington lawmakers. His downfall comes even after former President Donald Trump offered support for the embattled Republican.

Despite his troubles, Cawthorn was seen as the favorite going into Tuesdays primaries in the states 11th District, aided by Trumps backing and a big fundraising operation though his campaign has spent its money at least as fast as hes raised it.
