Trump traveled to Mexico City and met with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto earlier Wednesday but the two wound up telling different stories about their meeting. Trump told reporters they didnt discuss who would pay for the border wall hes proposing Nieto tweeted that he told Trump Mexico wouldnt foot the bill.
It was clear Trump was trying to avoid attacking Mexicans generally, and keep his focus on undocumented immigrants. But he wasnt backing away from the proposal that has animated his campaign.
Theyre great people, and great leaders, he said of Mexicans during his Phoenix speech, but theyre going to pay for the wall.
Within Ice Im Going To Create A New Special Deportation Task Force
Trump had previously called for a deportation force. He wasnt backing away from that terminology on Wednesday night.
However, again, Trump shifted his emphasis saying those officers would work with local and state law enforcement officials to round up criminals immediately, rather than suggesting theyd boot all undocumented immigrants, regardless of their actions within the United States.

Trump’s Comments On Immigrants From ‘shithole’ Countries Stir Outrage
The White House issued a statement that did not deny the remarks, however Trump tweeted an apparent denial early Friday: “The language used by me at the … meeting was tough, but this was not the language used.”
It came as senators huddled in the Oval Office with the president to discuss a path forward on an immigration deal. Trump questioned why the United States would want people from nations such as Haiti while he was being briefed on changes to the visa lottery system.
According to the aide, when the group came to discussing immigration from Africa, Trump asked why America would want immigrants from “all these shithole countries” and that the U.S. should have more people coming in from places like Norway.
A source familiar with the meeting told NBC News the president was particularly frustrated during discussions about the visa lottery system a program Trump has railed against repeatedly in recent months. Another White House source explained the language Trump used as his way of trying to emphasize his support for a merit-based immigration system.
Later Thursday, railed against Democrats over ongoing talks on an immigration deal. “The Democrats seem intent on having people and drugs pour into our country from the Southern Border, risking thousands of lives in the process. It is my duty to protect the lives and safety of all Americans. We must build a Great Wall, think Merit and end Lottery & Chain. USA!” he wrote.

In California, an Air Force veteran was raped, murdered and beaten to death with a hammer by an illegal alien with a long criminal history. In Georgia, an illegal alien was recently charged with murder for killing, beheading and dismembering his neighbor. In Maryland, MS-13 gang members who arrived in the United States as unaccompanied minors were arrested and charged last year after viciously stabbing and beating a 16-year-old girl. Over the last several years, I have met with dozens of families whose loved ones were stolen by illegal immigration. Ive held the hands of the weeping mothers and embraced the grief-stricken fathers. So sad. So terrible. I will never forget the pain in their eyes, the tremble in their voices and the sadness gripping their souls. How much more American blood must we shed before Congress does its job?

Anger As Trump Says Haiti Immigrants Are Likely Spreading Aids To The Us
Former president Donald Trump once again hit out against refugees seeking asylum in the US, this time claiming Haitians probably have AIDS and labelling their arrival a death wish for our country.
Mr Trump was speaking on Sean Hannitys primetime show on Fox News on Thursday when he was questioned on Covid-19 testing protocols for refugees. He went on to make several unfounded claims about immigrants and even spoke of a conspiracy by other countries against the US.
Theres one other thing that nobody talks about, the former president said.
So we have hundreds of thousands of people flowing in from Haiti. Haiti has a tremendous AIDS problem. AIDS is a step beyond. AIDS is a real bad problem.
So hundreds of thousands of people are coming into our country and if you look at the stats and you look at the numbers, if you look at just take a look at whats happening in Haiti, a tremendous problem with AIDS, Mr Trump said.
Many of those people will probably have AIDS and theyre coming into our country, he said. We dont do anything about it. We let everybody come in. Its like a death wish, like a death wish for our country!
Mr Trump also said dozens of countries are emptying-out their prison by purposely sending newly-released prisoners to America.
The comments triggered criticism online, where some users pointed out his previous racist statements while many also pointed towards his own administrations inability to tackle Covid.

What Changes Has The Administration Implemented
Undermining asylum: The Trump administration has repeatedly imposed new restrictions on asylum seekers, making it nearly impossible for many people to claim protection in the United States. These restrictions include preventing migrants from applying for asylum if they traveled through another country before reaching the U.S. if they didnt apply in the previous country. The administration has also exported its asylum provision obligations to ill-equipped countries like El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala.
In January 2019, the Trump administration began implementing its Remain in Mexico policy, which forces Central Americans seeking asylum to return to Mexicofor an indefinite amount of timewhile their claims are processed. Since the start of the pandemic, the U.S. government has postponed all immigration court hearings, effectively stranding asylum seekers in Mexico. To make matters worse, asylum seekers are still required to go to their port of entry on the day of their previously scheduled court date to receive a new notice to appearor face a deportation order for not showing up. Now the administration is exploiting the pandemic to impose a categorical ban on people seeking asylum, further endangering the lives of migrantsincluding children.

Allowing More Migrants To Request Asylum
The policy: Customs and Border Protection policy that restricts the number of people who can request asylum each day at U.S. ports of entry.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials began limiting the number of undocumented immigrants requesting asylum at ports of entry in Southern California in 2016 under the Obama administration, said David Bier, immigration policy analyst at the Cato Institute, a Washington, D.C.-based libertarian think tank.
The Trump administration continued the so-called metering policy in 2017 and then expanded it to ports along the entire southern border in 2018 after groups of mostly Central American migrants began traveling through Mexico in caravans and arriving at ports of entry. Under the metering policy, only limited numbers of migrants requesting asylum are allowed into the United States daily at each port to be processed. The number of asylum seekers allowed in each day is based on available space at U.S. holding facilities. The number varies daily from port to port, but generally fewer than 50 asylum seekers have been processed daily at each port and often less.
Those not allowed in are placed on informal waitlists and turned back to wait in Mexico. At times, the number of asylum-seekers waiting at ports has ballooned into the thousands. Some asylum seekers have reported waiting weeks and sometimes months.

Public Charge Restrictions On Awarding Green Cards
On August 12, 2019, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services formally announced a new rule restricting poorer immigrants from attaining Lawful Permanent Resident status, popularly known as a Green Card. Three federal courts on October 11, 2019 issued preliminary injunctions blocking the rule just four days before it had been scheduled to take effect. On December 5, 2019 the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals reversed the preliminary injunction from the California district court, ruling the administration was likely to prevail in its arguments that it had legal authority to issue the regulations. On December 9, 2019 the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals reversed the preliminary injunction from the Maryland district court. The rule remained blocked, however, due to the New York district court having issued a nationwide injunction. On January 8, 2020 the Second Circuit Court of Appeals refused to lift the New York courts nationwide injunction. On January 27, 2020 the U.S. Supreme Court reversed the Second Circuit and lifted the nationwide injunction on the rule, allowing the administration to implement the rule everywhere except the state of Illinois. On February 21, 2020 the Supreme court reversed the injunction from the Illinois district court, allowing the administration to enforce the rule nationwide.
Proposed Travel Ban From Certain Muslim
Trump frequently revised proposals to ban travel from certain Muslim-majority countries to the United States in the course of his presidential campaign. In late July 2016, NBC News characterized his position as: “Ban all Muslims, and maybe other people from countries with a history of terrorism, but just don’t say ‘Muslims’.”
In December 2015, Trump proposed a temporary ban on foreign Muslims entering the United States “until we can figure out what’s going on”. In response to the 2015 San Bernardino shooting, Trump released a statement on “Preventing Muslim Immigration” and called for “a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what the hell is going on”. In a December 2015 interview, the host Willie Geist repeatedly questioned Trump if airline representatives, customs agents or border guards would ask a person’s religion. Trump responded that they would and if the person said they were Muslim, they will be denied entry into the country.
Trump has on several occasions expressed opposition to allowing Syrian refugees into the U.S.saying they could be the “ultimate Trojan horse“and has proposed deporting back to Syria refugees settled in the U.S. By September 2015, Trump had expressed support for taking in some Syrian refugees and praised Germany’s decision to take in Syrian refugees.

Changes To Resettlement Program
President Trump reduced the cap on the number of refugees resettled in the United States from 110,000 set by President Obama, to 30,000 for FY2019 and 18,000 for FY2020. Trump also added quotas for refugees from particular countries and on those seeking asylum on religious grounds.
Executive Order 13888 added the requirement that state and local governments consent to refugee resettlement in order for federal funds to be used. Resettlement agencies expressed confusion about which governments needed to consent the order required the U.S. Secretary of State and the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services to develop a procedure by December 25, 2019. On November 21, three resettlement agencies sued to block the order, arguing it would keep thousands of refugees from being reunited with their families. In January 2020, a federal judge granted the resettlement agencies’ request for a preliminary injunction to block the executive order from going into effect.
President Trumps Executive Orders On Immigration And Refugees
President Trump signed three executive orders the week of January 23 which offend the dignity and threaten the rights of immigrants and refugees both in the United States and globally. On January 25 at the Department of Homeland Security , Trump signed executive orders on border security and interior enforcement. On January 27, he signed an executive order at the Pentagon on refugees and visa holders from designated nations.

Emboldened To Go Further
Biden has pledged to work with Congress on legislation that puts DACA recipients and the rest of the countrys estimated 11 million unauthorized immigrants on a pathway to U.S. citizenship.
But he would need to muster enough support in a Congress that has failed to compromise on comprehensive immigration bills for more than a decade and that could continue to be divided come January 2021. Like Mr. Trump, Biden is likely to take executive action to implement immigration policy, including programs to shield Dreamers and other immigrants from deportation, experts said.
Former DHS officials cautioned that a Biden administrations immigration actions would likely face legal challenges and could also be hampered by federal courts which have blocked many of Mr. Trumps policies. Cuccinelli said that could happen but stressed that he believes unfavorable judicial rulings tend to go in a one-way streak.
There are no conservative activist judges in any serious numbers, not like the left-wing judges were seeing making war on this president, Cuccinelli said.
In the past year, Mr. Trumps judicial appointments have sided with him in rulings allowing the administration to implement, among other measures, the public charge rule, broad asylum restrictions for border-crossers and the termination of deportation protections for roughly 400,0000 immigrants who have lived in the U.S. for years.

Elimination Of Medical Deferred Action
On August 7, 2019 the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service terminated a program called “medical deferred action”, which allowed immigrants to remain in the country temporarily while they or their children receive treatment for serious or life-threatening medical conditions. The only exception was for military families. Without making any public announcement, the service sent letters to multiple families whose children are getting treated under this plan, telling them their permission to be in the country would be revoked in 33 days. Some patients complained they would die if they were not allowed to continue treatment in the United States. Met with public outcry, this policy change was reversed by September. In October 2019, USCIS Acting Director Ken Cuccinelli later testified to a Congressional investigation that he alone had made the decision to end the program.

Trump did not make the El Paso shooter pick up his weapon in his manifesto the 21-year-old suspect mentioned that both Republicans and Democrats shared blame for what he saw as the erosion of American society. But people are taking him and his ideas seriously. The El Paso terrorist says he was afraid of an invasion, a central theme of the Trump presidency. This constant dehumanization of Latinos has resulted in something we have always agonized about: an act of senseless violence that ripped through one of the countrys greatest border cities.
