Nick Folk’s Job Is Safe

Quinn Nordin has been a great story throughout camp and he looked good in the preseason opener, but he struggled mightily this time around.

The rookie kicker missed one of his two field-goal attempts and two of his four extra-point tries. Needless to say, that isn’t going to help his case for the starting job this season. While he boasts big-time potential with his strong leg, Nordin notably struggled with accuracy during his time at Michigan. Those issues appear to still be lingering, so it’s hard to imagine the veteran Nick Folk not starting the 2021 campaign as New England’s kicker.

Winner: Qb Cam Newton

Newton was on fire to begin the night for New Englands offense. He finished completing eight of his nine attempts for 103 yards, including a 28-yard touchdown pass to Jakobi Meyers.

This was a big performance for the quarterback battle that may have put Newton in the lead. He lasered balls in with speed and accuracy while moving up in the pocket to avoid rushes.

If Newton can play like that in the regular season, this team is in good hands.

Dwayne Haskins got advice from his QB coach to play like a jazz player.

Jazz is real smooth. The blues. You bop your head, snap your fingers, Haskins said.

Haskins hit all the right notes in his push for the backup quarterback spot, throwing for 161 yards and a touchdown to lead the Pittsburgh Steelers to a 24-16 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night.

Ben Roethlisberger sat out Pittsburghs second preseason game. Mason Rudolph has been the teams backup for the past three seasons and just may keep that job. Haskins, though, is giving Rudolph a bit of a push in his attempt at winning the backup spot.

Haskins threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Johnson. Pittsburgh also got a 1-yard scoring run by Anthony McFarland.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Haskins was very much in command of his play.

We need to see more, he said. We need to see more of him. We need to see more of everybody.

Philadelphia Eagles Vs New York Jets Daily Fantasy Picks

Devonta Smith and Gardner Minshew have a prime opportunity to put up a lot of points this week. Against a weak secondary and a struggling defensive line, the Eagles have rushing and passing threats that can put the Jets on skates. It will be interesting to see which threat the Eagles utilize more, but regardless, both players should score points this week.

For the Jets, Id consider putting my faith in Elijah Moore this week. The only problem is that that falls squarely on the back of Zach Wilson to perform, which can be dicey. But he has proved himself to be a good target in recent weeks, and is really coming into his own.

Owens was cleared to play in Super Bowl XXXIX, defying doctors orders by playing on his injured ankle containing 2 screws and a metal plate.

The other major story was the Patriots’ potential loss of both their offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator at the end of the season, and how it might affect the team in 2005. On December 12, 2004, about a month and a half before the game, New England offensive coordinator Charlie Weis signed a contract to become the head coach of Notre Dame starting in the 2005 season. Rumors were also circulating that defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel would also leave the team to become the head coach of the Cleveland Browns .

Due to injuries at the tight end spot, the Eagles were forced to sign Jeff Thomason, a former tight end who was working construction at the time, to a one-game contract for the Super Bowl. Thomason saw time during several plays, although never had a ball thrown his way. This was his third Super Bowl, playing in two with the Green Bay Packers during Andy Reid’s days as a Packer assistant.

With this appearance the Patriots became the 8th team to make it to the Super Bowl for the 5th time. They joined the Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos, Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers, Miami Dolphins, Washington Redskins, and Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders. They would be joined by the Green Bay Packers in 2011 and the New York Giants in 2012.

Eagles vs. Patriots | Super Bowl LII Game Highlights

Linebacker Matthew Judon continued to show why he may be one of the best free agent signings in the NFL this season. Judon drew a bead on an errant snap to Eagles quarterback Joe Flacco, knocking the ball to defensive back Jalen Mills, who receivers the ball at the Philadelphia 9-yard line. Running back Damien Harris took a five-yard rush into the endzone, as the Pats capitalized on the turnover.

New England would once again light the scoreboard toward the end of the first quarter. Cam Newton looked comfortable and in-rhythm throwing the football connecting with Sony Michel in the backfield on a few receptions. The Pats incumbent quarterback would find Jakobi Meyers on a well-placed 28-yard pass through zone coverage. Meyers maintained great body control along the side for the touchdown.

When the ball was given to Mac Jones, the rookie did not disappoint. His first series was a 17-play, 91-yard drive, lasting just over nine minutes. Jones nearly connected on a beautiful would-be touchdown to receiver NKeal Harry. Harry was unable to corral the pass as he landed awkwardly on his left shoulder. Rookie running back Rhamondre Stevenson would cap the drive with a one-yard rush for the touchdown.

How To Watch New England Patriots Vs Philadelphia Eagles Nfl Preseason Game

ByMichael Balderstonpublished 19 August 21

The Patriots and Eagles will kick off the action for week two of the 2021 NFL preseason.

The New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles have played each other in two Super Bowls, most recently in 2017 and with each team winning one. This preseason matchup between the two squads is a far cry from those games, but both bases of passionate fans are sure to have an interest in what transpires on the field this Thursday, Aug. 19.

Playing at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, the New England Patriots vs. Philadelphia Eagles game is the first for week two of the 2021 NFL preseason. Because of the new 18-game schedule for the regular season, it is also the second-to-last game of the preseason, which typically means starters will get a longer look.

Read on below for a game preview and how to tune in for all the gridiron action.

Patriots Seek To Become A Dynasty

New England finished the regular season with a record of 142, bested only by the Steelers’ 151 mark, and ranking 7th in yards gained and fourth in points scored .

The Patriots’ major acquisition prior to the season was veteran running backCorey Dillon, who joined the team after playing 7 seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals. In his first 6 seasons in the league, Dillon averaged over 1,250 rushing yards per year, including setting a single-game rushing record against the Denver Broncos on October 22, 2000. In 2003, however, injuries, conflicts with the Bengals’ management and coaching staff, and other off-field problems limited him to just 541 yards during the season. By the end of the 2003 season, Dillon had lost his starting job to running back Rudi Johnson, and thus demanded to be traded. Although many observers questioned how effective the 30-year-old Dillon would be after recovering from his injuries as well as his ability to function in a team environment, the Patriots decided to sign the running back in exchange for a second-round draft pick.

On defense, the Patriots were plagued by injuries, especially in their secondary. Defensive backs Tyrone Poole and Ty Law suffered season-ending injuries, while safety Eugene Wilson, who led the team with 4 interceptions, missed several games. In order to compensate for the losses, the following players were promoted to starters:

Loser: Wr N’keal Harry

It was nice to see Mac Jones connect with Harry early in the second quarter to convert a third-and-long situation. However, later in the quarter, Harry had a beautiful pass bounce off his hands that resulted in an incompletion and left the wide receiver injured on the ground.

While Harry walked off the field, he never returned.

For a guy who needs every opportunity he can get to prove to this team that he deserves a spot, missing time is never a good thing.

Hopefully, its nothing serious, and Harry can make it back to practice sooner rather than later.

Second Half Scoring Highlights

Jones opened the second half by leading a methodical, 9-play 75-yard drive. The rookie showed strong pocket presence, finding receiver Gunner Olszewski on two separate occasions. Running back J.J.Taylor continued to make his case for a roster spot, displaying a nice spin move, before taking his second red zone carry into the endzone.

On his final scoring drive of the night, Jones would once again lead his team 70 yards on 10 plays, utilizing the rushing abilities of both Stevenson and Taylor. FOr the second time in as many games, Stevenson would earn his second touchdown of the game on another one-yard rush.

New England And Philadelphia Will Kick Off Week 2 Of The Preseason

You donât have to look too far back in the history books to find the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles duking it out with a Lombardi Trophy on the line. While Super Bowl LII may have only been a few years ago, a lot has changed with these two franchises since that fateful night in Minneapolis as one club has a new head coach and both teams are trotting out different quarterbacks. Sure, tonightâs opener of Week 2 of the preseason is merely an exhibition, but each team is looking to reset its foundation to hopefully find itself back in the big game in the not too distant future.

For Philadelphia, it hopes to be able to rekindle a championship run with new head coach Nick Sirianni and second-year quarterback Jalen Hurts leading the way. In New England, Bill Belichick is still steering the ship, but it remains to be seen if itâll be Cam Newton or first-round rookie Mac Jones working as his co-pilot as QB1.

There are still plenty of questions with both of these teams and tonightâs preseason head to head may get us one step closer toward getting some pivotal answers. Hereâs how you can catch all the action unfold in real time.

Clinching Scenarios For Bills Vs Patriots

The Patriots and Bills will both likely be in the playoff field. The Patriots are atop the AFC East a game clear of the Bills and two games clear of the Miami Dolphins .

The Patriots enter Week 16 with a 98% chance to make the playoffs, per FiveThirtyEight. The Bills are 77% to get in. But only one can actually punch their ticket this weekend.

How The Bills Can Clinch A Playoff Spot

New England Patriots vs Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl XXXIX Highlights

While the Bills would almost certainly make the playoffs with a win, that cannot be guaranteed this week. There is no scenario in which they clinch a playoff berth in Week 16. But doing so in Week 17 or 18 would be a mere formality.

FiveThirtyEight has Buffalo at 98% to reach the postseason and 88% to repeat as division champions with a win in Foxborough.

Both Cam Newton And Mac Jones Look Sharp

Cam Newton got the party started for the Patriots and made it clear he isn’t going to give up his starting job without a fight. The veteran quarterback was almost perfect, completing eight of his nine passes for 103 yards and a touchdown to Jakobi Meyers.

Newton was replaced by Jones at the start of the second quarter. New England’s first-round pick in this year’s draft stepped in and led a 17-play drive capped off by a Rhamondre Stevenson rushing TD. He also tossed a perfect deep ball to N’Keal Harry at the end of the first half, but the Pats wideout failed to come up with the grab and was injured on the play.

Jones built off his encouraging preseason debut with another promising performance as he completed 13 of his 19 passes for 146 yards. Of those six incompletions were three dropped passes and a spike.

Newton did enough to not lose ground in the QB competition, but Jones certainly did all he could to keep the Week 1 starter debate alive.

Other Week 16 Playoff Implications For Bills Patriots

Weve discussed what each team can gain with a W. Lets explore what each can lose with an L. The Bills have the most at stake, which makes sense because they have a worse record. A loss would end any possibility that Buffalo wins the AFC East. But even worse, the Bills would no longer control their own destiny.

There would be scenarios in which they could lose to New England and then beat the Atlanta Falcons and New York Jets and still miss the playoffs. The most obvious threat in that scenario would be the Steelers , who would get in over Buffalo if they win out.

Meanwhile, the Patriots would barely hurt their chances to make the playoffs with a loss but it would likely be as a Wild Card entrant. They enter Week 16 with the AFCs best conference record and own the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Chargers, Browns, and Titans.

So even if they lose out, they would still have a real path to the postseason. The one scenario weve found that would keep the Patriots out? If they lose to the Bills and the Dolphins win out which would include a victory over New England in Week 18.
