Jennifer Rubin Leaves Republican Party

Don't Miss

Liberals Once Loathed The Conservative Washington Post Columnist Then She Trained Her Fire On Trump

Kurt Andersen: âDonald Trump Has Paralyzed The Party’ | The Last Word | MSNBC

Donald Trumps regular assaults on reality have so thoroughly torn Washingtons fabric of time and space, we hardly notice things that in the ancient days of 2016 would have struck us as bizarre. But one through-the-wormhole phenomenon still deserves examination: the embrace of Jennifer Rubin by DCs liberal establishment.

Until recently, the conservative Washington Post opinion columnist was widely reviled by readers on the left. In political journalism, Rubin is openly regarded as a hack and perhaps a shill by an ideologically diverse subset of her peers, Atlantic columnist Conor Friedersdorfwrote in 2012. Salon named her to its hack list two yearsin a row. And after onetime Post ombudsman Patrick Pexton left that gig in 2013, he wrote a column in WashingtonCity Paper offering some advice to his old employerincluding a strong recommendation that it fire Rubin. Not because shes conservative, he wrote, but because shes just plain bad.

However, Rubin has found a remarkable ideological deodorant: her loathing of Donald Trump. Liberal watchdog Media Matters for Americaonce a regular Rubin antagonisthasnt body-slammed her since . Her work now gets shared on social media by liberal celebs such as Dan Rather, Laurence Tribe, and MSNBC host Joy Ann Reid. Last October, Salon named her to a different list: It now considers her one of the .

For some, this enemy-of-my-enemy business is a bit uncomfortable.

It Is Fair To Worry Whether The Gop Electorate Has Become Incapable Of Setting Standards For Political Debate Of Distinguishing Crass Entertainers From Legitimate Contenders And Of Rejecting Bigotry And Irresponsibility

Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry exited the presidential race on Friday in the same manner in which he conducted his second presidential race, with maturity, largeness of spirit and devotion to conservative policies that improve the lives of all Americans.

He declared, It is time to elevate our debate from divisive name-calling, from sound bites without solutions, and start discussing how we will make the country better for all if a conservative is elected president.

And he warned, The conservative movement has always been about principles, not personalities. Our nominee should embody those principles. He or she must make the case for the cause of conservatism more than the cause of their own celebrity.

He concluded with a call to action.

I remain as convinced as ever: There is nothing wrong with America today that cannot be fixed with new leadership, he said. Leadership that champions conservative ideas. As great as our greatest Republican presidents were from Lincoln to Reagan it is their ideas that remain greatest. …

Washington Post Lunatic Jennifer Rubin Loses Her Mind After President Trump Released From Hospital

Walter Reed Hospital released President Trump on Monday night after admitting him over the weekend as a precaution due to Coronavirus.

Some people in the media did not take the news of Trumps release well.

Jennifer Rubin of the Washington Post, who used to be a conservative columnist, had an absolute breakdown on social media.

FOX News reports:

Trump tweeted Monday afternoon: I will be leaving the great Walter Reed Medical Center today at 6:30 P.M. Feeling really good! Dont be afraid of Covid. Dont let it dominate your life. We have developed, under the Trump Administration, some really great drugs & knowledge. I feel better than I did 20 years ago!

Trumps medical team, led by White House physician Dr. Sean Conley, reaffirmed the presidents optimism, with Conley noting Trumps condition had improved from when he was admitted Friday, while adding he may not entirely be out of the woods yet.

Replacing The Republican Party

James Joyner·Tuesday, September 4, 2018·

Inspired by George W. Bushs eulogy at John McCains funeral, Jennifer Rubin muses, If the GOP isnt McCains party, why not build a new one?

While I agree that Lincoln, TR, Reagan, and McCain frequently exemplified the values in that passage, theyre not uniquely Republican or conservative. Beyond that, parties dont maintain much consistency over long periods. Lincolns Republican Party represented the left wing of American politics at the time. Half a century later, Teddy Roosevelt was a Progressive, carving out vast swaths of land for environmental preservation, breaking up large corporations, and vastly expanding the regulatory power of the federal government. Reagans GOP, by contrast, was ostensibly about de-regulation and rolling back the power of the central government.

At any rate, Rubins new party would be different from the one thats currently aiding and abetting Donald Trump:

We already have a political party that stands for those things: the Democratic Party. Until recently, the GOP stood for those things, too, with the possible exception of faith in the scientific consensus.

Rubin continues:

Theres not enough detail to go on there but, arguably, neither party is doing much on those fronts.

Rubins party is arguably one I could vote for. Especially if the Democratic Party decides that growing antipathy for Trump is tantamount to support of a hard turn left.

Before moving into opinion writing, Rubin was a labor and employment lawyer in Los Angeles, working for Hollywood studios, for 20 years. She now describes herself as a “recovering lawyer”. Commenting on working with her from 2000 to 2005, Hollywood animator and trade union leader Steve Hulett spoke to Media Matters “We used to chew the fat all the time in her office and over at lunch at Café del Sol near Dreamworks. She supported Kerry in 2004 and worked closely with Katzenberg, who is a big time Democratic donor. I didn’t know what to think when she moved east and started blogging like mad as a conservative. Washington Post Columnist Discusses Women’s Role In Electoral Politics At Radcliffe Institute Event

Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin discussed the role of women in modern electoral politics at a virtual event hosted by the Radcliffe Institute on Thursday.

The event entitled American Women and the Ongoing Battle to Save Democracy included prepared remarks from Rubin and a discussion moderated by Michel M. Martin 80, the weekend host of NPRs All Things Considered.

Rubin discussed the double standards she said female candidates faced in the 2020 presidential election by drawing a comparison between U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren and billionaire Tom Steyer.

You had someone like Elizabeth Warren who had a stack of white papers, Rubin said in reference to Warrens experience. Then you had people like Tom Steyer, who was a billionaire, who had never run for anything.

You had this huge disparity, and yet the refrain of who was risky and who was not risky remained in gender terms, Rubin added.

Despite this difference, she noted the large role women played on Biden’s campaign and continue to play in his administration.

I also look at how Joe Biden ran his race how he won and what hes doing now, Rubin said. He had a large number of women who worked on his campaign, including his campaign chief, Jennifer OMalley Dillon, now a deputy chief of staff in the White House.

Rubin said the history of women’s role in politics inspired her book “Resistance: How Women Saved Democracy from Donald Trump.”

Has Donald Trump Finally Split The Republican Party

With only a few more weeks before Biden takes over, significant segments of the party are finally breaking with the president

After four years of norm-shattering rule, Donald Trump appears close to doing the one thing observers have long predicted but that has not yet come to pass: splitting the Republican party.

With Trump staring at the prospect of only a few more weeks in the White House, significant segments of the party are finally breaking with a president to whom they have hitherto displayed almost unwavering loyalty. Furthermore, Trumps stoking of division in his own party has even succeeded in uniting warring factions among his opponents.

Responding on Wednesday night to the presidents bombshell threat to veto the $900bn Covid relief and stimulus bill, Democratic leaders and members of the progressive House Squad otherwise at each others throats welcomed Trumps demand for increased direct payments to individual Americans.

Lets do it! said Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

We can pass $2k checks this week, wrote Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Somewhere on Capitol Hill, presumably, Republican Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell buried his head in his hands.

Opinion: Liz Cheney Got Something Right And Some Things Very Wrong

Washington Post columnist calls to ‘burn down’ Republican Party

Rep. Liz Cheney delivered remarks on Tuesday at a First Amendment award ceremony in New Hampshire. Her speech reminded us how valiant she has been in the face of her political partys descent into lies, conspiracies and authoritarianism but also the limits of her vision.

The country faces an unprecedented domestic threat from a president attempting to unravel the foundations of our constitutional republic, she told the audience. It is noteworthy that she used the present tense. Former president Donald Trump, after all, has not given up on his quest to delegitimize the 2020 election.

To the contrary, she pointed out, Trump recently attended a House Republican gathering and fundraiser where he described Election Day as the real insurrection and the violence on Jan. 6 as justified. So much for the idea of Republicans running from Trump in 2022. He remains a clear and present danger to democracy.

Cheney quickly turned her fire on her own party: Political leaders who sit silent in the face of these false and dangerous claims are aiding the former president who is at war with the rule of law, and the Constitution, she said. When our constitutional order is threatened, as it is now, rising above partisanship is not simply an aspiration. It is an obligation. Instead, Republicans have made themselves willing hostages to this dangerous and irrational man.

Opinion: The Stampede Away From The Gop Begins

Rep. Liz Cheney threw down the gauntlet on Wednesday, refusing to accede to her partys transformation into a cult. Calling out the liars in her midst, she is now House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthys worst nightmare. I think that he is not leading with principle right now, Cheney said in an NBC interview. And I think that it is sad, and I think its dangerous. In other words: Hes a spineless pawn of the former president who will do his bidding no matter how outrageous the demand.

As Cheney tosses McCarthy around like a rag doll, she is making crystal clear how high the stakes are in 2022. A MAGA Republican House majority controlled by the disgraced former president would be a threat to the republic. Making a midterm election about the unfitness of the challengers rather than a referendum on the incumbents is a gift to the Democratic Party, which would love nothing more than to make McCarthy the poster boy for toadyism to a despot who tried to steal an election.

But for all her gusto and courage, Cheney might simply be a victim of wishful thinking that there is a Republican Party to be rescued. The chance that non-MAGA Republicans will constitute a majority of the House or Senate Republican membership is virtually nonexistent. The more realistic option from the point of view of pro-democracy, pro-sanity Americans in the center right may be to flee the party.

The declaration raises a host of questions:

FLASHBACK: Burn Down The Republican Party: Jennifer Rubin Wants To ...

Ive been thinking a lot about Liz Cheney. Her courage in standing up to Donald Trump and the increasingly authoritarian Republican Party shouldnt make her exceptionalideally, she would have a considerable amount of companybut it does. Having broken with the Republican Party myself, I know that the initial break eventually led me to an almost complete cutoff with the right side of the political spectrum and a somewhat reluctant embrace of the left. I will be curious to see if Ms. Cheney follows the same path.

While I dont have Ms. Cheneys pedigree, I remember being a Republican from an early age. For example, I supported Richard Nixon in the 1960 election when I was just nine years old. I couldnt have explained a single one of Nixons policy positions, but I remember being turned off by John F. Kennedys supporters.

My estrangement from my party and its ideology can be dated very specifically, and much like Ms. Cheney, it came about because of a particular event. In my case, it was passage of the Medicare Part D legislation in Congress in her case, it was the attempted coup on January 6, 2021.

I had a crisis of faith.

They didnt.

Neocons Paved The Way For Trump Finally One Admits It

Max Boot charts his journey throughand out ofthe conservative intellectual movement.

The NeverTrumpers may have failed to prevent Donald Trump from becoming president, but he has been a godsend for their public reputations. Instead of remaining in the wilderness, the neoconservatives who make up the bulk of the NeverTrump movement have fitfully begun to move back toward, or at least flirt with, the Democratic Party, which is where the original neocon journey began. Among some of their longtime detractors, its creating a vertiginous sensation. James Wolcott, for example, recently observed in Vanity Fair, One of the chewier ironies of the Trump interregnum is finding that Im following former foes on Twitter and elsewhere that I once mocked, reviled, and cast into outer darkness during the Bush presidency, especially after the invasion of Iraq.

The Corrosion of Conservatism: Why I Left The Right by Max Boot

Now that the neocons have, in a manner of speaking, been born again, they are once more crusading for regime change against an authoritarian foe, only this time on the home front. Trump, not Saddam Hussein, is the main object of their ire, and they are earning quite a hearing in mainstream liberal outlets. Eliot A. Cohen and David Frum regularly appear in the Atlantic. Bret Stephens and Bari Weiss have decamped from the Wall Street Journalto the New York Times. William Kristol and Jennifer Rubin are regulars on MSNBC.
