‘Democrats Get One Shot’: McConnell Says GOP Will Help Raise Debt Ceiling

Former President Donald Trump again shared some blistering criticism of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell after the top Republican lawmaker reached a deal with Democrats to allow for the federal debt ceiling to be increased.

McConnell, who represents Kentucky, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, reached a deal that will see a number of Republicans vote to end debate on the debt ceiling increase. Then the legislation will be allowed to pass with just 51 votes. While no Republicans are expected to vote to approve raising the debt ceiling, at least 10 will vote to end debate and enable Democrats to pass the bill without their support.

Trump took issue McConnell’s willingness to reach the compromise with Democratic leaders.

“Mitch McConnell just folded on the Debt Ceiling, a total victory for the Democrats,” the former president said in an official statement posted to by his spokesperson Liz Harrington.

Trump argued that McConnell “gave the Democrats everything they needed.”

“The Dems would have folded completely if Mitch properly played his hand,” he said.

“He has all the cards to win, but not the ‘guts’ to play them. Instead, he gives our Country away, just like he did with the two Senate seats in Georgia, and the Presidency itself. The Old Crow is a disaster!” Trump concluded.

Fox News Projects Victory For Top Republican Mitch Mcconnell

Fox News is projecting that Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell will be re-elected in Kentucky.

First elected to the Senate in 1984, McConnell is Kentuckys longest-serving senator. He’s been in the headlines recently for leading Republican efforts to have Justice Amy Coney Barrett confirmed to the Supreme Court just weeks before election day.

A win for McConnell will not come as a surprise – Kentucky is a relatively safe state for Republicans. In 2016, Trump won it by a whopping 30 points.

Relationship With Obama Administration

As the leading Republican senator, McConnell confronted and pressured other Republican senators who were willing to negotiate with Democrats and the Obama administration. According to Purdue University political scientist Bert A. Rockman, “pure party line voting has been evident now for some time … but rarely has the tactic of ‘oppositionism’ been so boldly stated as McConnell did.” According to University of Texas legal scholar Sanford Levinson, McConnell learned that obstruction and Republican unity were the optimal ways to ensure Republican gains in upcoming elections after he observed how Democratic cooperation with the Bush administration on No Child Left Behind and Medicare Part D helped Bush’s 2004 re-election. Levinson noted, “McConnell altogether rationally … concluded that Republicans have nothing to gain, as a political party, from collaborating in anything that the president could then claim as an achievement.” A number of political scientists, historians, and legal scholars have characterized McConnell’s obstructionism and constitutional hardball as contributors to democratic erosion in the United States.

Use of the filibuster

In 2012, McConnell proposed a measure allowing President Obama to raise the debt ceiling, hoping some Democratic senators would oppose the measure, thus demonstrating disunity among Democrats. However, all Democratic senators supported the proposal, which led McConnell to filibuster his own proposal.

Foreign Policy And National Defense

Some, including neoconservatives, in the Republican Party support unilateralism on issues of national security, believing in the ability and right of the United States to act without external support in matters of its national defense. In general, Republican thinking on defense and international relations is heavily influenced by the theories of neorealism and realism, characterizing conflicts between nations as struggles between faceless forces of an international structure as opposed to being the result of the ideas and actions of individual leaders. The realist school’s influence shows in Reagan’s “Evil Empire” stance on the Soviet Union and George W. Bush’s Axis of evil stance.

Since the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, many in the party have supported neoconservative policies with regard to the War on Terror, including the 2001 war in Afghanistan and the 2003 invasion of Iraq. The George W. Bush administration took the position that the Geneva Conventions do not apply to unlawful combatants, while other prominent Republicans strongly oppose the use of enhanced interrogation techniques, which they view as torture.

Republicans have frequently advocated for restricting foreign aid as a means of asserting the national security and immigration interests of the United States.

Mitch Mcconnell Changes His Tune About The Jan 6 Investigation

Mitch McConnell wins GOP nomination in bid for 7th term

Shortly before members of Congress left Capitol Hill for their holiday break, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell was asked what he hoped to learn from the committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack. I assumed he’d dismiss the bipartisan panel and its relevance.

But he didn’t. “I read the reports every day,” the Kentucky Republican told reporters, “and it’ll be interesting to see what conclude.”

As NBC News noted, McConnell went a little further later in the week.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Thursday that he looks forward to seeing what the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol finds in its probe. “It was a horrendous event and I think what they are seeking to find out is something the public needs to know,” McConnell said in an interview with Spectrum News.

In the same interview, he added, “I think the fact-finding is interesting we’re all going to be watching it.”

At face value, this may not have seemed especially notable. The Senate GOP leader has never been one to echo crackpot nonsense about the pro-Trump assault on the Capitol, so it stood to reason he’d be comfortable with public answers to questions about what transpired on Jan. 6.

But given McConnell’s efforts in May, this was not at all predictable.

McConnell balked anyway. On May 19, the minority leader denounced the bipartisan plan, suggesting an independent investigation wouldn’t produce any “new facts.”

Mcconnell Says Republicans Will Not Again Aid Democrats In Raising Debt Limit

WASHINGTON, Oct 8 One day after the Senate approved a temporary lift to the U.S. debt ceiling, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell wrote in a letter to President Joe Biden that he would not aid Democrats again in raising the debt limit.

Following weeks of partisan fighting, the Senate approved the short-term fix that will allow the United States to avoid defaulting on its bills in a 50-48 vote on Thursday evening. The House will vote on the measure on Tuesday.

Congress will need to find a longer-term solution in December. But McConnell has said the reprieve would give Democrats enough time to raise the debt ceiling through a procedural move known as reconciliation, which Democrats have rejected as an option for lifting the cap.

In his letter to Biden, McConnell referenced comments on the Senate floor on Thursday by Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, who said Republicans had played a dangerous and risky partisan game.

I am writing to make it clear that in light of Senator Schumers hysterics and my grave concerns about the ways that another vast, reckless, partisan spending bill would hurt Americans and help China, I will not be a party to any future effort to mitigate the consequences of Democratic mismanagement, McConnell wrote.

Mitch Mcconnell Wants Ten Republicans To Help Democrats Raise The Debt Limit

Blaze News

Senate Republicans may be on the verge of helping Democrats raise the debt limit by temporarily changing the rules of the Senate to fast-track the process.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is reportedly seeking at least ten Republicans to agree to a strategy that would permit the Democratic majority to raise the debt limit with a simple majority vote. In a deal struck with Majority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer , Republicans would give Democrats enough votes to change the rules, and then Democrats will pass the debt limit increase without Republican support.

A total of 60 votes are required to change the Senate rules, so at least ten Republicans must agree to McConnells strategy to get it done.

This new bill, which has been negotiated by Schumer and McConnell, would allow the debt ceiling to be increased only up until Jan. 15 by a simple majority vote. Manu Raju 1638898429

The measure requires the debt ceiling to be increased by a specific dollar amount . McConnell has insisted on Dems being forced for a specific dollar amount Manu Raju 1638898430

The deal negotiated between McConnell and Schumer would solve two political problems: Raising the debt limit and giving Republicans cover to claim they opposed doing so.

But will te Republicans go along with McConnells plan? According to Politico, some of his leading GOP voices in the Senate were receptive to the strategy.

His Fathers Plea On Voting Rights

As McConnell tells his story, his politics were shaped by the stirring words of his father, who had witnessed Black people facing racism and being denied their voting rights while growing up in segregated Alabama.

A lot of us went to battle because some people didnt believe in the one man, one vote rule, A.M. McConnell, a World War II veteran who worked as a manager for DuPont, wrote to his son, according to a letter excerpted in The Long Game, McConnells 2016autobiography. I hope you never forget the importance of every single one of us each man has their right to stand up and be counted.

McConnell wrote that his fathers words had a deep impact. Around that time, McConnell was a leader of young Republicans on the University of Louisville campus, and he had enthusiastically introduced the partys 1964 presidential nominee, Sen. Barry Goldwater of Arizona, at a school speech.

But, McConnell later wrote, he was extremely disappointed that Goldwater voted against the civil rights bill, which put the senator on the wrong side of such an important issue if not the most important issue of my generation. He said that so great was my anger that he voted for the Democrat, Lyndon Baines Johnson.

But it was also clear early on to those who knew McConnell that ideals meant far less to him than power.

McConnells view of an expansive federal role in elections, however, would soon change.

Mitch Mcconnell Should Win 2021’s ‘politician Of The Year’

McConnell Criticized By Some Republicans For Voting To Raise Debt Ceiling

While there are awards for Politician of the Year outside the United States, there is no U.S. version. He was dealt a tough political hand in 2021 and played it very well.

Just consider the challenges McConnell faced at the beginning of the year. Republicans are in the minority, so McConnell doesnt officially control the Senate agenda. The mainstream media like to criticize him because he has often quashed their desire to see the progressive wish-list enacted.

Former President Trump frequently berates McConnell and has been calling on Republican senators to oust him as their leader a request those senators, who know how effective McConnell is, decided to ignore.

And recently, several conservative talking heads have criticized McConnell because they think he caved to Democrats by supporting Bidens infrastructure bill and allowing the federal governments debt ceiling to rise.

But if thats the case, the question for the Senate Republican leader isnt whether to allow a vote on raising the debt ceiling, but when and how best to do it?

So McConnell and Schumer agreed to a one-time, expedited process to allow a debt-ceiling increase with only Democratic votes.

Trump Repeats Call For Gop To Oust Mitch Mcconnell As Punishment For Working With Democrats To Stop The Us Defaulting On Its Debt

  • Trump called for GOP House Minority leader Mitch McConnell to be removed from his position.

  • It comes after McConnell cut a new deal with Democrats to raise the debt ceiling.

  • Trump previously called in October for McConnell to be ousted before the deal was done.

Former President Donald Trump called for Republicans to rebel against Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and oust him from his leadership position as vengeance for brokering a deal to raise the federal debt ceiling.

Trump called McConnell a broken old crow and criticized him for working with Senate Democrats on the debt ceiling deal instead of using it as leverage to oppose President Joe Bidens spending plans.

McConnell gave Democrats limited support in the Senate, allowing them to overcome to filibuster rule and use their own votes to lift the debt ceiling, a limit beyond which the US government is forbidden to borrow.

Mitch McConnell is giving the Democrats victory on everything, Trump said in a statement issued by his spokesperson Liz Harrington through Twitter on Sunday.

What is wrong with this Broken Old Crow? Hes hurting the Republican Senators and the Republican Party. When will they vote him out of Leadership?

He didnt have the guts to play the Debt Ceiling card, which would have given the Republicans a complete victory on virtually everything. The Dems were ready to fold!

  • ‘what Is Wrong With This Broken Old Crow’

Republican Mitch McConnell believes Barack Obama

For months now, former President Donald Trump has sought to topple McConnell as leader of the Senate Republican Caucus.

Frequently referring to McConnell as an “old crow,” Trump has criticized the Kentucky Republican for not sufficiently indulging his claims of a stolen 2020 election, for helping to pass a bipartisan infrastructure bill, and for cutting deals with Democrats to raise the debt ceiling.

“What is wrong with this Broken Old Crow?” Trump said in a December 12 statement. “He’s hurting the Republican Senators and the Republican Party. When will they vote him out of Leadership?”

The two haven’t spoken since before the January 6 storming of the US Capitol, and McConnell denounced Trump as “practically and morally responsible” for the attack even as he announced that he wouldn’t vote to impeach the former president in the Senate trial after Trump had left office.

Trump has harshly criticized McConnell for cutting deals with Senate Democrats to raise the debt ceiling, though Senate Republicans have largely shrugged off his remarks.

The former president also said that a bipartisan infrastructure bill that was supported by 19 Republican senators paved the way for the Democrats’ Build Back Better climate and social spending bill, which remains stalled amid opposition from Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia.

Trump, meanwhile, has repeatedly denounced the committee as the “Unselect Committee” and cast its efforts as part of a partisan witch hunt against him.

Still Angry At Mcconnell Trump Calls For New Republican Leader

The former president continues his criticism of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell as the party eyes its prospects for 2022 elections.

Former President Donald Trump kept up his attack on US Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell on Thursday, saying Republicans would do well to find a new leader if they hope to take back the Senate in 2022.

Trump launched the latest salvo on Fox Business Network, when his interviewer asked about the upcoming midterm election battle for control of the Senate and House of Representatives.

We need good leadership. Mitch McConnell has not done a great job. I think they should change Mitch McConnell, the former president said, according to the Reuters news service.

US Republicans have splintered over the former presidents future political role after the January 6 Capitol riot and Trumps second impeachment by the House of Representatives. The former president remains popular among Republican voters and local activists.

Asked about Trumps comments, McConnell told Fox News Channel, Were looking to the future, not the past.

The Kentucky Republican has led his caucus in the Senate without opposition since 2007.

Bad blood between Trump and McConnell could complicate matters for Republicans as they try to reclaim the Senate majority, with both voters and legislators divided between Trump loyalists and the traditional party.

% Of Republicans Disapprove Of Mitch Mcconnell In New Poll

A poll released Monday shows powerful Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell hemorrhaging GOP support, less than a year until the 2022 midterm elections.

McConnell came in dead last in Gallups new survey ranking 11 federal officials by their job approval ratings. His 34 percent public approval is lower than that of President Joe Biden, Kamala Harris and even House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

But while the three top Democrats in government found majority support among their own partys voters, the Kentucky Republican is trailing in the GOP sphere.

Just 46 percent of McConnells fellow Republicans approve of his job in the Senate, while a decisive 52-point majority disapprove.

The overwhelming dissatisfaction in the Senates longest-serving GOP leader could leave him in a vulnerable position especially with Donald Trump and his supporters hammering away at McConnells credibility for months.

In contrast to McConnells numbers, his House counterpart, Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, polls the highest among any Congressional leader of either party listed in the survey.

McCarthys staunch support for Trump coupled with his positive rating among his own party is a strong indicator that the former president is still very much a kingmaker among the GOP.

Nearly three-quarters of Republican voters polled 71 percent approve of McCarthys job in office.

The California Republican also scored a whopping 12 points higher than McConnell in his overall approval rating with 46 percent.
