Cole’s love of basketball is well known. He played for Sanford High School and was a walk-on at St. John’s, but he ultimately turned his focus to music.
Cole, told Sports Illustrated in 2013: “I had a fear of actually making the team and quickly losing my college lifestyle.
“I would have had to turn into this guy who had to practice two or three times a day and wake up at six in the morning. Plus I was in love with music and I knew I wanted to rap.”

The team will play Nigeria’s Rivers Hoopers on Sunday, opening the first ever Basketball Africa League .
Rumours of the signing began when the musician, whose full name is Jermaine Lamarr Cole, was seen in the Rwandan capital, Kigali, at the weekend.
The team’s coach, Alan Major, then confirmed the news to state broadcaster Rwanda TV on Monday.
According to sports news site The Undefeated, Cole arrived in Kigali on Saturday and is currently in quarantine ahead of Sunday’s game.
Rwandan paper The New Times also tweeted a video of Cole wearing a Patriots jersey, adding that he “could feature” in the NBA-backed league.
The 36-year-old Grammy Award winner is expected to play three to six games this season, CBS reports.

The Basketball Africa League, or the BAL, is the NBAs first professional league outside of North America. A joint venture by the NBA and FIBA, the format of qualification and competition was modeled after the UEFA Champions League.
While six of the participating teams qualified by winning their countrys domestic competition, the other six participants gained entry through a separate qualifier tournament.

The inaugural Basketball Africa League tips off Sunday as the host Patriots Basketball Club faces Nigerian club Rivers Hoopers at Kigali Arena in Kigali, Rwanda .
The two-week tournament matches 12 of the best club teams in Africa with the final taking place on May 30. To start, teams have been divided into three groups of four and will play three games against opponents within their group.
Following that group stage, the top eight teams will advance to the quarterfinal round next week. Group A, which include US Monastir and GNBC , will get the action started with the Patriots and Rivers Hoopers.
Patriots Basketball Club has become the most dominant force in Rwandan basketball over the past five seasons with four national league titles. The additions of Jermaine Cole, Brandon Costner and head coach Alan Major added some American flavor to the hosts, who re-signed Rwandan 3-point specialist Kenneth Gasana.

Hong Kong’s first “patriots only” legislative election witnessed a record low turnout on Sunday, reflecting a steep decline in civic and political engagement following Beijing’s overhaul of the city’s electoral processes.
According to a government news release, provisional turnout was 30.2% by close of polls — far lower than the previous record low of 43.6%, in 2000. The last legislative election five years ago saw a 58% turnout.
In an attempt to boost the vote, the city offered free public transport all day — but rather than going to the polls, many Hong Kongers instead appeared to take the free trains and buses to hiking trails and campsites.
The results, announced Monday morning, saw pro-establishment candidates claim all 20 seats in the available geographic constituencies. None of the city’s major pro-democracy parties fielded any candidates.
Carrie Lam, the city’s leader, thanked voters late Sunday night, saying it was “an important election following the improvements to the electoral system to implement the principle of ‘patriots administering Hong Kong.”
Under the previous system, about half of the 70-seat legislature was directly elected by the public, while the other half was chosen by trade and industry bodies that usually favor pro-China candidates.
