For more than a year now, Ive been hearing from people in the inner circles of official Washington GOP lobbyists, Republican pundits, even a few Republican members of Congress that Donald Trump is remarkably stupid.
I figured they couldnt be right because really stupid people dont become presidents of the United States. Even George W. Bush was smart enough to hire smart people to run his campaign and then his White House.
Several months back when Secretary of State Rex Tillerson called Trump a fking moron, I discounted it. I know firsthand how frustrating it can be to serve in a presidents cabinet, and Ive heard members of other presidents cabinets describe their bosses in similar terms.
Now comes Fire and Fury, a book by journalist Michael Wolff, who interviewed more than 200 people who dealt with Trump as a candidate and president, including senior White House staff members.
In it, National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster calls Trump a dope. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and former Chief of Staff Reince Priebus both refer to him as an idiot. Rupert Murdoch says Trump is a fking idiot.
Trumps chief economic adviser Gary Cohn describes Trump as dumb as sh-t, explaining that Trump wont read anything not one-page memos, not the brief policy papers nothing. He gets up halfway through meetings with world leaders because he is bored.

To understand why so many voted to re-elect Trump after four years of historic political turmoil featuring a failed pandemic response, a devastating economic shock and a crisis in racial justice its necessary to understand the forces that propelled him to victory in 2016.

Here’s a guy with an Ivy League degree who allegedly graduated tops in his class from the University of Pennsylvania. A guy who has amassed a fortune of more than $4 billion making smart and savvy business deals. A guy who has risen to the top of almost every industry he’s tackled, whether it’s sports, entertainment, media, or real estate.
In short, Donald Trump is a very, very intelligent man. His business record, academic achievements, and personal accomplishments indicate that.
And yet, Donald Trump the presidential candidate has a tendency of making very, very stupid statements. Statements that make the pundits wonder if he’s read the Constitution. Statements that make his closest friends question his integrity. Statements that make many of us — even his GOP supporters — wonder if Donald Trump graduated tops in his class from any school, let alone an Ivy League one.

Forrest Gumps momma was right: Stupid is as stupid does, which this week in American politics means stupid is clearly Donald Trump and the journalists who hate him.
Everyone knows the Nick Fuentes story by now thanks to journalists, hair a-fire, who never miss an opportunity to bash the former president. In this case, Trump had dinner with his pal, Kanye West, and West brought his pal Fuentes, a racist and holocaust denier .
Ever since the meeting became public Trumps been trying to explain it away.
The latest came in a Truth Social post in which Trump blamed fake news for the backlash and he only agreed to meet with West because hes been a friend and hes a seriously troubled man in financial distress.
It was West, he said, who unexpectedly brought Fuentes.
Trumps probably telling the truth about not knowing Fuentes. Theres no evidence otherwise. But it makes not a whit of a difference for Trump-hating journalists who have no problem kissing the Devil if it means smearing Trump.
Look, Trump isnt endorsing Fuentes. Nor is he suggesting anything Fuentes says is something he believes. Hating Trump so much you are willing to give a guy like Fuentes ink and air time is, well, disgusting journalism in my book.
Momma Gumps saying about stupidity applies to Trump who should be more careful with his dinner partners and to the journalists who hate him so much theyre willing to lie to tell the truth.

In 2017, when Adam Jadhav returned to his old home town of Henry, Illinois , his research found some of the maladies described by Lenz and Chatman. Some people longed for better days gone by. Some younger men were seething because they no longer had a place in the local economy.
But in an article published recently in the Journal of Rural Studies, he described something more subtle: a quiet despair in farm country.
Not so long ago, Henry was an economic hub in central Illinois. There were healthy family farms, and industries associated with the farms Caterpillar Inc. machinery factories, tire factories. And the town was 99% white, which allowed an unchallenged racism. Jadhav was harassed because his father, the United Methodist minister, was an Indian immigrant.
In recent decades, change has swept through Henry like a prairie storm. The economy has devolved. Opportunity, wealth and people especially young people have fled to bigger cities. Shops have closed. Churches have closed. And the people left behind mourn for whats been lost.
When Donald Trump ran in 2016, Jadhav said, the slogan Make America Great Again found an audience. Its not that Trump was popular to many, Jadhav said, he seemed a horribly flawed candidate. Still, Trump spoke to their values and insecurities, and Hillary Clinton didnt.
What comes next, now that Trump has lost? Jadhav is of two minds.

A WashingtonPostABC News poll taken the last week of May 2020 asked Americans,Do you think Trump has the mental sharpness it takes to serve effectively aspresident? Fifty-two percent of respondents said no, with only 46 percentsaying yes.
