2010 Jeep Patriot Transmission Problems

Don't Miss

Are Jeep Patriots Cheap

2010 JEEP PATRIOT CVT TRANSMISSION PROBLEM? CODE U0101 ( PART 1)

When it comes to Jeep Patriots, the answer to the question Are they cheap? is somewhat complicated. On the one hand, the starting MSRP for a Jeep Patriot is just over $22,000, which makes it one of the more affordable options in the Jeep lineup.

However, when you factor in the cost of options and upgrades, the price of a Jeep Patriot can quickly climb. For example, adding a four-wheel drive will add nearly $2000 to the sticker price.

As a result, while a Jeep Patriot may not be the cheapest vehicle on the market, it is certainly possible to find one that fits your budget. With careful shopping and a little bit of luck, you should be able to find a Jeep Patriot that meets your needs without breaking the bank.

Jeep Patriot Cvt Transmission

There have been numerous complaints of early transmission failure, even with with normal servicing. Issues start with a whining noise, overheat warnings, and an inability to accelerate. The most common solution is replacement of the transmission. Late 2014 model year Patriots changed to a non-CVT transmission.

Jeep Patriot Electrical Problems

The Jeep Patriot has been known to have a few electrical problems. One issue is with the power windows. The windows will sometimes roll down on their own, and they may also refuse to roll up.

This can be a real nuisance, especially in cold weather. Another problem that has been reported is with the electric locks. The doors may unlock themselves while the car is driving, or they may not unlock at all.

Finally, there have been reports of problems with the electrical system in general, including flickering lights and mysterious dead batteries. While these issues can be frustrating, they are generally not serious enough to cause a recall. However, it is important to have them checked out by a qualified mechanic if they occur.

First issue happened Monday, September 10, 2018. Drove from South Portland, Maine to Auburn, Maine, which is about a 45 minute drive northbound on I95. Transmission started slipping, going anywhere between 1000RPM to 4000RPM very inconsistently and having issues downshifting. A few minutes before going to my exit, the dashboard lit up with a transmission overheat light and the vehicle became very sluggish and difficult to drive, forcing me to go from 70MPH to 40MPH. I pulled on the side of the road and got car towed to a transmission workshop only to have them return me the vehicle as they could not replicate code and transmission did not record an overheat.

My second issue happened September 25, 2018 while driving from Brunswick, Maine to Van Buren, Maine. This is a 4 hour drive. The transmission overheat light went off again, and I was forced to pull on the side of the road. Due to the nature of my job which involves traveling, I let the trans cool off, and attempted to drive, only to have the transmission overheat numerous times. Eventually the car became extremely sluggish even without the transmission light going off. The car was then towed over 200 miles to the repair workshop where a month later, the transmission was replaced and two front axles replaced after being destroyed by the transmission damage.

The Jeep Patriot has always been highly regarded for its brand prestige and affordable price. However, one thing seems to be consistently associated with it Jeep Patriot transmission problems. Because these failures are so extensive and happen so frequently, it has almost become an expectation that undermines the cars reliability and overall performance. This guide aims to counter that perception by discussing the vehicles most common issues and how to fix them.

Common Jeep Patriot transmission problems include shuddering and whining noises. Generally, issues originate from a defective transmission but may also come from damaged brakes and tie rods or corroded sway arms. Inspecting transmission fluid levels is usually the first step to addressing them.

Here are the 7 most common Jeep Patriot transmission problems:

  • Loss of acceleration power
  • Grinding sounds
  • Transmission gear slippage
  • Unresolved transmission failures are an accident waiting to happen hence, they should be treated with the utmost urgency. That said, if transmission and differential fluid levels are up to spec, then it is time to look into other components that may require a more laborious troubleshooting process. Dont worry if you are new to all this, as this article has got you covered.

Transmission Failure Problem Of The 2008 Jeep Patriot

My 2008 Jeep Patriot has only 59k miles on it. My wife was driving on the interstate and it began to make a roaring sound from the transmission. We took it to the dealership and they said the cvt transmission needed replaced. Jeep will not provide any assistance and want over $4000 for a transmission replacement of a transmission that is not able to be service and needs fluid changed around 120k. I researched and found multiple people that have cvt transmission failures at low mileage. Jeep is even getting rid of the cvt in the new Jeep Patriot. This transmission is a lemon and the company should assist with replacement when it goes out early.

    Jeep Patriot Engine Problems

The Jeep Patriot has been praised for its stylish design and off-road capabilities. However, some owners have reported engine problems that can lead to expensive repairs.

Common issues include head gasket failure, oil leaks, and engine overheating. In some cases, the engine may need to be completely replaced. These problems can be costly to fix, and they can leave drivers stranded on the side of the road.

Jeep has issued a recall for certain Patriot models with affected engines, but this may not be enough to fully address the problem. Until Jeep can find a permanent solution, owners of the Patriot should be aware of the potential for engine problems and plan accordingly.

What Are The Symptoms Of A Bad Transmission For My Jeep

    Jeep Patriot CVT Transmission Failure

There are several tell-tale signs, but it all depends on your type of transmission.

    Jeep Manual Transmissions

The clutch system, which disengages the engine from the drivetrain to change gears, usually has the highest number of issues. Sometimes it just needs an adjustment, other times it needs to be replaced. If your clutch isnt the problem, its your gearbox. Common warning signs are:

    • Difficulty switching gears
    • Grinding or a crunching sound
    • Clutch slips or doesnt feel right
    • Burning smell or high engine revs

    Jeep Automatic Transmissions

Automatic transmission issues are far more complex than manual transmission problems because they have twice as many parts. In general, automatic transmission problems fall into four categories:

    • Car is slow to move after putting gearshift lever in Drive or other forward gear
    • Car doesnt move when you shift into a forward gear
    • Bucking and kicking when driving
    • Slowing down despite pressing harder on the gas pedal

    Other Jeep Patriot Powertrain Issues

Although this list covers the most reported set of problems with the Jeep Patriot, it is non-exhaustive. Other vehicle issues are as equally troublesome as the items above. Here are some of them:

    • Fractured transmission fill tube
    • Loud clunking noise
    • Burning smell from beneath the hood due to oil leaks or burnt plastics
    • Hot water coming from clogged A/C drain tube, causing waterlogging and transmission module failure

Most of the problems Jeep Patriot vehicles have are in its 4WD system called Freedom Drive, which connects to a Jatco-built CVT. Since the 2007 production model, this transmission has proven to have an unfortunate proclivity to failure. What makes this worse is that the transmission is rarely serviceable, which means an expenditure amounting to $5,000 for the clueless vehicle owner. A cheaper alternative would be a rebuilt transmission. But even that option costs between $800 and $3,400 .

    Transmission Slipping Signs: Jeep Patriot

A slipping transmission is pretty easy to recognize. Here are the most common symptoms that one has started to slip:

    • Higher RPM Than Usual When the transmission slips, it is not transferring all the energy from your Patriots engine to the rear wheels. When this happens, the tachometer jumps up as the RPM increases.
    • Smell As the clutches and bands inside the transmission slip, they create a lot of friction. This friction gets them hot and you may notice an egg-like smell.
    • Vehicle Wont Move Eventually the transmission may not be able to move the vehicle at all. If this is the case, the first thing to check would be the transmission fluid
    • Since the transmission will no longer be able to efficiently transfer power to the rear wheels, fuel mileage will suffer as the transmission slips.

    Problems With Jeep Patriot

    2008

To have a better understanding of Jeep Patriot problems, well look through each model year. This goes from its first year on sale in 2007 and onwards. In a nutshell, the most serious of the Jeep Patriot problems that you need to be concerned about is the transmission. The Jeep Patriot uses what it calls the Freedom Drive. This is its 4WD system, connected to a Jatco-built CVT, continuously variable transmission. Using this, it can simulate the low-range modes you get with a dedicated transfer case.

Therefore, you can more or less get a proper off-road experience with a simple road-going gearbox. However, this CVT has proven to be prone to failure and unreliability, even with regular servicing. This is the most severe fault listed by CarComplaints.com and several other repair sites such as RepairPal. Other than transmission-related issues, the Jeep Patriot is also subject to leaking. Some of the seals along with the windows, roof, sunroof, and so on could fail over time, causing water to leak into the cabin.

Those two the gearbox and leaking are the most commonly reported issues for the Patriot. That said, there are other small issues that continue to plague owners of the Patriot. Here is a list of the Jeep Patriot problems, in greater detail

    Intermittent Shifts To Neutral

Front-wheel drive Jeeps with a ZF9HP48 9-speed automatic transmission can unexpectedly shift to neutral while driving. This issue is intermittent in most cases, and there will be no apparent correlation to driving conditions or overheating. This problem will trigger a check engine light, and a corresponding DTC code will be stored in the Engine Control Unit .

    Possible cause

    • Faulty transaxle range sensor connector and wiring, which causes incorrect signals from the sensor. When the TCU detects an implausible signal, it shifts the transmission to neutral and sets the P0901 code. As this is a well-known problem and a serious safety issue, a Service Bulletin covers it. Check if your vehicle is affected.

Does 2010 Jeep Patriot Have A Cvt Transmission

There are few changes to the Jeep Patriot for 2010. With the Patriot Sport 4×2 you have your choice of either the 2.0-liter I-4 or the 2.4-liter I-4 and either the 5-speed manual transmission or the standard CVT, where the Limited and Latitude 4×2 only offers the 2.4-liter I-4 with either the 5-speed or the CVT.

    Are Jeep Patriots automatic?

The Patriot uses a continuously variable transmission equipped with a four wheel drive system, marketed as Freedom Drive II, capable of holding the lowest ratio the CVT can reach, in lieu of a traditional two-speed transfer case. The Patriot carries Jeeps Trail Rated badging.

How Long Do Jeep Patriots Last

As with any car, its life expectancy is highly dependent on how well youve cared for it. Among the Jeep Patriot community, most agree that the Patriot could easily last at least 150,000 miles. Given that the average yearly mileage of most American households is around 15,000 miles, this equates to roughly 10 years of ownership. Thats before any serious restoration or rebuilding work is necessary. However, with diligent care and regular servicing, there have been quite a few Patriots breaking into the 200,000 and 250,000+ miles barrier. To ensure that it could last that long, just make sure that you abide by its service intervals, and undertake maintenance work frequently.

How Your Patriots Cooling System Works

Jeep Patriot CVT Transmission Fixed jf011e whine noise service

Your Patriots cooling system works by cycling the engine coolant from the engine through the radiator. The water pump pushes the water through the entire system. The thermostat opens up once the engine reaches operating temperature and allows coolant in.

If any part of this system fails, your Patriot will eventually overheat.

Here are the most common symptoms of a vehicle overheating.

Used 2010 Jeep Patriot Consumer Reviews

I purchased my 2010 patriot sport in November of 2010 with about 13k on it. it was a rental vehicle. i have put 90k on it in 5 years. this is the best vehicle i have ever owned. i regret not upgrading to leather seats, sunroof, etc. but i’d buy another patriot without hesitation. my dad owns a repair shop that my brother works at and now partially owns. we were raised with GM vehicles. my 05 equinox was the absolute worst vehicle i ever owned. it’s so refreshing to have my patriot. i’ve had only to do the normal maintenance work on it. brakes, tires and some suspension stuff along with the scheduled services. i would recommend this vehicle to anybody. it certainly isn’t as fun to bang on as my boyfriend’s hemi grand cherokee but i love my patriot and have no plans on getting a new vehicle anytime soon.

    Safety

I have the Sport 2.0 L with the 5 speed manual and have had great results. The editors of all the car magazines don’t like this car, but they compare it to cars that cost $15K more. This is an excellent working person’s car, great mileage in town, and enough engine for highway cruising. In 4th gear it climbs long hills at 55 without any problem. My insurance rate went down by $20 a month because of this car’s great safety features. And if you’re a big guy like me, it has a lot of room. One caveat, I got the manual transmission because Chrysler seems to have a hard time making a decent automatic transmission, but I like the feel of the manual. One practical vehicle.

    Delayed Gear Shifts Or Limp

Jeep vehicles with a Mercedes sourced 722.6 5-speed automatic transmissions can suffer from issues that range from harsh and delayed gear shifts to gear slippage or even going into limp-home mode. In most cases, these symptoms will be intermittent and trigger a check engine light to store a corresponding error code.

    Possible causes

    • Faulty conductor plate, which holds the solenoids and connects them to the TCU. When the conductor plate is faulty, it causes communication problems, which results in improper solenoid operation. This is a well-known problem, and there are numerous aftermarket solutions.
    • Worn or faulty valve body solenoid. Sometimes, the problem can be due to damage to the internal wiring.

    Common Jeep Patriot Problems

According to RepairPal, the Jeep Patriot has a Reliability Rating of 4.0 out of 5.0. It ranks 15th out of 26 compact SUVs. Despite its above-average reliability scores, the Patriot had some glaring issues, including:

    • Premature CVT failure – The Patriots continuously variable transmission is prone to failure. Drivers experienced symptoms like acceleration issues, overheating warnings, and whining noises. Customers claimed that the Patriots CVT was poorly designed.
    • Water leaking into the cabin – Numerous Patriot models are known to have leaky cabins. Some reported the water came in through the sunroof, while some came through the dome light. This increases the risk of electrical issues and mold growth.
    • Stalling engine – One of the worst issues with the Patriot lineup is the stalling engine. After 30k miles or so, several reports claimed the engine stalled and died while running. Typical fixes include replacing the crankshaft sensor or ABS module, which may cost you up to $660.
    • Rough manual shifting – The 2007 to 2010 Patriots were known to have manual transmission issues, but its not as bad as the CVT. Owners have reported vibrations and grinding noises whenever they shift into third gear. Some noted the same roughness when shifting to first and second gear. The touted fix is to replace the synchronizer rings of the transmission.
