Cowboys vs. Patriots Week 6 Highlights | NFL 2021

Patriots QB Mac Jones leads all rookie quarterbacks in a bevy of statistical outputs this season. Some of it is scheme, sure, while some of it is talent. But for the most part, a lot of Jones leading in stat categories stems from opportunity. The Patriots rushing attack has been suboptimal this season, forcing Jones into pass-first situations, giving him more opportunities than others in this class of rookie quarterbacks.

Mac Jones Showed Impressive Resiliency Late

For a moment, it looked like Jones had cost the Patriots a win when he was intercepted by Cowboys cornerback and his former Alabama teammate Trevon Diggs late in the fourth quarter. Diggs returned it for a touchdown to give Dallas a 26-20 lead with 2:27 remaining.

But on the first play of the very next drive, Jones challenged Diggs again with a deep pass down the left side of the field and connected with wide receiver Kendrick Bourne. Diggs got beat by a double move and Bourne raced to the end zone untouched for a 75-yard touchdown.

Honorable Mention: Ty Nsekhe

At one point in time the Dallas Cowboys offensive line was operating without both Tyron Smith and Lael Collins. If I had told you this would be the case a month ago we would have all panicked. Terence Steele has played admirably for Collins over the last five weeks, but in this particular game Ty Nsekhe was called upon while Smith dealt with an ankle situation. Nsekhe didnt set the world on fire, but he helped keep the ship afloat and did so at a moments notice.

Dallas Cowboys At New England Patriots: Live Stream Time Betting Odds How To Watch

The Dallas Cowboys haven’t beaten the New England Patriots in the Bill Belichick era.

Of course, those games 0-5 vs. the Patriots since 2003 coincide with the Tom Brady era, and the future Hall of Fame quarterback took his talents to Tampa Bay last season.

Dallas’ overall losing streak of six games goes back to 1999, with the Cowboys’ most recent victory coming in 1996, the last time they were defending Super Bowl champs.

Beating a six-time Super Bowl winner in Belichick would give the Cowboys another reason to believe they’re building something after going 8-8 and 6-10 the past two seasons.

With quarterback Dak Prescott back from his 2020 season-ending injury 1,368 yards, 13 touchdowns, three interceptions, 73.9% completion rate and a 116.9 quarterback rating Dallas is leading the NFC East by two games going into Sunday’s game at Gillette Stadium.

Mac Jones Vs Cowboys Defense

While Jones is leading the rookies in all major passing categories, hes also in the top five among all NFL starters in a few more. Hes currently fifth in the league in completion percentage , yet he ranks 27th in yards per attempt . Jones, and New Englands scheme, are opting for short-area throws before they test anything downfield, which has become a detriment to their offense.

The Patriots offense hasnt been able to keep a lead nor are they built to come back from a deficit. Despite his high completion percentage, when Jones has tried to push the ball downfield, there have been mixed results. The most concerning part of Jones 5 total interceptions is that all of them have come on throws over the middle of the field.

Its one thing to test your receivers on the outside against top-notch cornerbacks, but its entirely a different aspect to lose sight of underneath defenders or patrolling safeties for interceptions. With Trevon Diggs and Anthony Brown, the Cowboys dont really have to worry about being beat on the outside.

In the middle of the field, the mismatches are Damontae Kazee, Jayron Kearse, and LB Leighton Vander Esch. LVEs ability in coverage should go a long way for the Cowboys in stopping yards after the catch for Patriots receivers.

Ceedee Lamb’s Td Gives Cowboys The Lead

Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb caught a 1-yard touchdown pass with 4:53 remaining in the third quarter to help the Cowboys reclaim the lead and hold a 17-14 advantage over the Patriots.

Lamb’s touchdown may have just been the eighth of his brief career, but it holds a greater impact in Cowboys lore. It was their 2,500th touchdown since 1960, the most of any team in that span.

The Cowboys Patriots contest on Sunday was an absolute thriller for Cowboys fans. The Cowboys outplayed the Patriots on offense, defense, and on special teams and therefore should have won by a comfortable margin. Unfortunately, some poor officiating and some crucial mistakes by the Cowboys kept the game close. Still, the Cowboys managed to come away with the victory at New England, something they havent done since 1987. It was also the first time the Cowboys have ever beaten Bill Belichick who now owns a 1-5 record against the Americas Team. The Cowboys have now won five straight, their longest winning streak since 2016.

Dak Prescott finished the day 35 of 51 for 445 yards, 3 touchdowns and an interception. It was another strong overall performance from Dak that was overshadowed somewhat after he suffered a calf strain on the games final play. Dak attended the post game press conference wearing a walking boot and he will be evaluated further on Monday. He said he will be fine, but Cowboy fans will all be anxious to find out the results of the MRI scheduled for Monday. CeeDee Lamb led all receivers with 9 catches for 149 yards and 2 scores.

Prescott is currently second in NFL passer rating to only Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson. With Wilson out at least the next six weeks, Prescott becomes the leagues active leader in that metric. Though irrelevant to team wins, its imperative to look at individual numbers like this to showcase just how terrific the Cowboys signal-caller has been playing.

Trevon Diggs Seventh Interception Gives Cowboys A 26

Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs intercepted Mac Jones at the Patriotsâ 42-yard line and returned the pass for a touchdown to give the Cowboys a 26-21 lead with 2:27 remaining.

Diggs, who has seven interceptions, matched an NFL record by intercepting a pass in the first six games to start the season. Only Rod Woodson has had seven interceptions in the first six games of a season.

The Cowboysâ attempted two-point conversion, a catch by Tony Pollard, failed, leaving them only up by five.

Draft Kings: Cowboys Will Cover Against Patriots In Week 6

Cole Huff writes: “No matter the circumstance, it seems as though New England is always in a close game. They lost close ones to Tampa and Miami before winning by three over the Texans in Week 5. However, its unlikely the Patriots will be able to stay within striking distance against a high-powered Dallas offense that also has the defense to smother Mac Jones and the Patriots’ offense.”

Honorable Mention: Jayron Kearse

We have spent a lot of time talking about the addition of Jayron Kearse to this defense and he has justified every single bit of it.

Kearse has raised the floor of the group in an overall sense. He generates accountability on the back end and it is clear to see that this is felt from the defense as a whole. In this game specifically Kearse almostgot home on Patriots quarterback Mac Jones a few times, but the pressure that he generated was invaluable.
