Panthers Getting Healthier Ahead Of Matchup With Patriots
The Carolina Panthers are facing a number of offensive personnel questions heading into Sundays game with the Patriots. Star running back Christian McCaffrey has been on IR, while starting quarterback Sam Darnold left last weeks win over the Falcons early after taking a big hit to the head.
Before Wednesdays practice the first of the week the Panthers announced on social media that McCaffrey has been designated to return from IR. He was later spotted taking part in practice.
Thats not a guarantee McCaffrey will play on Sunday, but its the first step towards him being eligible. The team has until Saturday at 4 p.m. to activate him in order for him to play this week, with the overall window for activation three weeks long. McCaffrey hasnt played since Week 3 due to a hamstring injury, and has already suffered one setback, so the Panthers may not want to rush him. The team is 3-0 when McCaffrey has played this season, and 1-4 when he sits.
Darnold was also spotted at the early portion of practice, after reportedly spending time in concussion protocol earlier this week. However, backup quarterback P.J. Walker led team drills according to Ellis Williams of the Charlotte Observer. Speaking with the media on Wednesday, Bill Belichick said his team is preparing for both quarterbacks.
The Patriots Go For Two Out Of Three
Despite their victory in Super Bowl XXXVI after the 2001 season, the Patriots stumbled early in the 2002 season, recorded a 97 regular season record, and failed to make the playoffs.
Then, New England seemed to implode before the 2003 season ever started. Five days before their opening game against the Buffalo Bills, Pro Bowl safety Lawyer Milloy, one of the Patriots’ defensive leaders, was unexpectedly cut by the team after refusing to restructure his contract. The move devastated many of the New England players, while Milloy immediately signed with the Bills two days later. As for Darnold, he was listed as a limited participant on Wednesday. However, he was “extremely limited” , as he only participated in the walkthrough portion of practice. Darnold remains under concussion evaluation, and is also dealing with an injury to his right shoulder.
Receiver Terrace Marshall, Jr. also continues to undergo evaluation for a concussion, but was a full participant in practice on Wednesday.
Last, but certainly not least, cornerback Stephon Gilmore was a full participant during Wednesdays session, listed with a quad injury, which kept him from participating in any on-field activity while with the Patriots throughout training camp, the preseason and the start of the regular season.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Cornerback Stephon Gilmore said Wednesday that he didn’t agree with how the New England Patriots handled his return from surgery on his torn quadriceps, which along with his contract was a primary factor in his departure.
The Patriots traded Gilmore to the Carolina Panthers on Oct. 6 in exchange for a sixth-round draft choice, and with the Patriots visiting the Panthers on Sunday , Gilmore now gets to face his former team.
“I just didn’t like how they handled my situation, my injury. A lot went on with that I didn’t agree with,” Gilmore told Patriots reporters on a conference call from Carolina.
“Now that I’m here, I’m able to do the things I have to do to get me back ready to where I need to be. I learned a lot there. I have a lot of friends there. A lot of great coaches. I just didn’t like how they handled my situation with my injury.”
New England Patriots Offensive Line Has To Control The Game

The O-line is the determining factor each and every Sunday. If they pass-block well, Mac Jones and his super-accurate throwing will carve up a defense, his lack of top wide receivers notwithstanding.

The New England Patriots Have To Play Mistake
The key to winning not only this game against Carolina but any game really is to play as mistake-free football as possible.
In plain terms, first, that means no fumbles and no interceptions. Getting some yourself is also a big plus as we saw in the win against the Los Angeles Chargers last week. Adrian Phillips had two huge picks last Sunday against the Chargers, and his timely pick-six was crucial in picking up a victory.
Their own turnovers were the bane of the Patriots early this season. At least two games were squandered directly because of turnovers.
One game was against the Miami Dolphins and the other was against the Dallas Cowboys. Both games were essentially in the bag but were thrown away due to costly late turnovers.
The Patriots could be sitting pretty with at least a 6-2 record absent those two plays. Just two really terrible plays gone wrong ruined that nice situation. Its a shame.
Mac Jones has to have a clean, as in no interceptions, day again as he did against the Chargers last Sunday. To beat Carolina, simply avoid any turnovers. It helps immeasurably.
