Rep. Steve Womack, R-Ark., lamented the chaotic start for Congress in an op-ed for the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Friday.
“I have repeatedly said how we govern early in the 118th Congress will frame our effectiveness over the next two years. With a narrow, four-seat majority, it is essential we hit the ground running and quickly execute our Commitment to America. After two days, House members have still not been sworn in,” Womack wrote. “Not a good start to 2023.”
Womack also didn’t sound optimistic that the stalemate would end anytime soon.
He wrote that “we will continue the insane exercise of calling the roll of the 118th Congress without a different outcome. But I look on the bright side: At least we are getting the opportunity to put a name with a face on the new members! Youve got to take the victories, no matter how small.”

The thirteenth time wasn’t the charm for McCarthy as he failed to garner enough votes to become speaker but he did inch closer to his goal.
McCarthy held on to the 14 Republican votes that had switched to him in the 12th round of voting, and added one other Rep. Andy Harris of Maryland.
Six Republicans still voted for another candidate Rep. Jim Jordan, who nominated McCarthy for the job on Tuesday.

A month later, at a conservative gathering in Orlando, Trump returned to the public spotlight with a keynote speech in which he first publicly suggested he would seek the presidency again. It’s been a theme at the numerous rallies he has held around the country since.
After the FBI search and seizure of government documents at his Mar-a-Lago club on Palm Beach, speculation grew that Trump might announce his campaign ahead of the midterm vote. A host of Florida GOP officials and figures encouraged him to do so.
He did not, however.
Regardless, Trump has lorded over the midterm elections, often soaking up the spotlight. He also began softly targeting those who may decide to run for president against him, such as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Trump’s former vice president Mike Pence. On Saturday night, at his Pennsylvania rally, Trump mocked DeSantis by referring to him as “Ron DeSanctimonious” and knocked Pence for registering low on a poll of potential Trump opponents.

Donald Trump was branded the Republican partys biggest loser following the US midterms on Tuesday, while his party rival Ron DeSantis swept to victory in a landslide in Florida, giving him a strong platform to challenge the former president in 2024.
If Trump was the Republican loser of the US midterms despite not being on the ballot paper it was DeSantis who emerged the partys big winner. Before Tuesdays election night, when the beaming Republican governor took to the stage in Tampa with his wife Casey and children to claim victory over woke ideology, Trump had looked like the probable 2024 presidential Republican candidate.
But after DeSantiss highly convincing re-election against Democrat Charlie Crist, in which the governor took 59.4% of the vote with 99% reporting, the relative political newcomer is being tipped as a potential GOP frontrunner.
In an indicator of the changing tide, News Corp newspaper the New York Post, historically a champion of the former president and which just two years ago endorsed Trump for re-election, declared the Florida governor DeFUTURE on its front page.
An article by Fox News, another traditional Trump ally, reported that Trump was blasted across media spectrum, citing a quote describing the former president as the biggest loser tonight.

This, of course, has nothing to do with principle, conscience or any revival of political courage. When Trump was a winner, they were willing to tolerate all manner of depravity. Prominent elected Republicans are suggesting that the party move on from Trump, and there are even signs that the crash of the red wave may also be eroding Trumps hold on the GOP base. A new YouGov poll gives DeSantis a 7-point lead over Trump among Republican and Republican-leaning voters.
There was even some brief hope that the GOP losses and the impending Georgia runoff might induce Trump to delay his big announcement.
But delay would signal weakness, and above all, Trump has to change the narrative, and reassert his dominance.
Gaetz Says He’s Been Talking To Democrats To Keep Them On The Floor

Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., said Thursday night on Fox News that his goal in discussions with Democrats has been to make sure they don’t leave the chamber and alter the vote count.
“My conversations with Democrats have largely been about making sure that they dont leave the floor for dinner or fundraisers or whatnot,” Gaetz, a leader of the group of conservatives opposing Kevin McCarthy for speaker, told host Laura Ingraham.
“We need them to stay there so that the denominator in the equation on the election of a speaker allows us to have leverage to push for many of the things weve been discussing,” including things like the budget, term limits and committee assignments, he said.
Questioned about members of the conservative opposition sending fundraising emails based on their votes against McCarthy, Gaetz said, “Ive sent out similar emails, and the reason is because pro-McCarthy groups have actually been running robocalls in our districts trying to pressure us and leverage us.” He added, “It is not the end of the world that we take a few extra days or maybe even a couple of weeks to sort this out.”
If members are not present for votes, it would lower the threshold McCarthy, of California, needs to win a majority and become House speaker. Democratic leadership, however, has been whipping members to make sure they vote as a unified bloc against McCarthy as they continue to nominate their leader, Hakeem Jeffries of New York, for the position.

Gaetz Says Trump Is ‘wrong’ For Supporting Mccarthy In Speaker’s Race
GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, a longtime Trump loyalist, said Thursday night that he was “not going to back” the former president in his support for McCarthy.
President Trump is wrong to the extent that he supports Kevin McCarthy, Gaetz, who nominated and voted for Trump on the House floor Thursday, told Fox News Laura Ingraham. I am not going to back him on this play.
When asked about the concessions in a potential deal and what else he might demand, Gaetz responded, I wouldnt be betting on my vote for Kevin McCarthy under almost any circumstance.
Gaetz went on to say that he would support Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio if McCarthy were to bow out of the race, adding that he believed Jordan “would win” in that scenario. McCarthy, however, has given no indication that he’s planning to throw in the towel, and Jordan has backed McCarthy in his bid for speaker.

Rally Underscores Pennsylvanias Importance
The presence of both Trump and Biden in Pennsylvania within days of each other reinforces the political importance of the Keystone State.
Trumps rally on Saturday is being sandwiched by two visits from Biden. The president was in Philadelphia on Thursday for his speech about democracy, and he will travel Monday to Pittsburgh to mark Labor Day. Trump may also return to the state for another rally for Oz and Mastriano before Novembers elections.
Pennsylvania was pivotal in deciding the presidency in 2016 and 2020, it will be a potential turning point in control of the Senate in 2022 and it will likely be a fierce battleground in 2024.
Biden carried Pennsylvania by roughly 80,000 votes, but the state was a major target of attacks from Trump and his allies after it took days to finish counting votes and determine the winner.
Given the states rules about when it starts counting mail ballots and other forms of early voting, a close race could provide another opening for Trump and his supporters to levy baseless claims of fraud should his preferred candidates lose.

He hand-picked the US Senate candidate, celebrity medical expert Dr Oz, and endorsed the far-right election conspiracy theorist Mr Mastriano for governor after his surprising primary win.
