How Do Independents Vote In The Primaries

CA independents can vote in Democrats’ 2020 primary, but not Republicans’ | ABC7

First, the open primary allows nonpartisan or independent voters to participate in the nominating process. If these voters are allowed to help select the nominees then they may be more likely to vote in the general election, since one of the candidates could be someone the non-partisan voter voted for.

They are: emergency room physician Kevin Baumlin Lt. Gov. John Fetterman second-term state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta of Philadelphia liberal activist and Jenkintown borough councilor Alex Khalil and third-term U.S. Rep. Conor Lamb of suburban Pittsburgh.

On the Republican side are seven candidates.

The Louisiana Primary System

The Louisiana system, sometimes called the “Cajun Primary,” eliminates the primary election altogether. Instead, all candidates, regardless of party affiliation, run on the same ballot in November. If a candidate receives more than half of the votes, that candidate is elected. If no candidate wins with a majority, the top two vote-getters face off in a December runoff election. Qualified absentee voters receive a ballot for the November election and a ranked ballot for the December runoff, so that they can vote as normal in the general election and then have their ranked ballot count for whichever runoff candidate they ranked highest in the runoff election.

Although Louisiana law refers to the election in November as the “primary” and the December runoff as the “general” election, the November election takes place on the federally mandated Election Day and most candidates win office by receiving a majority vote in that election, so it is best understood as a general election, with the December election as a contingent runoff.

The Louisiana system is sometimes mistakenly equated with the Top Two system, but holding the first election in November and electing any candidate with more than 50% of the vote in that election makes it sufficiently distinct that it should not be understood as a mere variant of Top Two.

Why You Need To Vote In The Primary Elections

Forget New Hampshire, TN early voting for GOP, Democratic ...

True or false. You only need to vote in the November presidential election and not the primary elections.

FALSE!

For most American voters, the presidential primary elections matter more than the general election. Like Ive said before, if you live in a red state or a blue state, your vote in the presidential election wont make a difference. The rest of your state will overwhelming vote for a Democrat or a Republican. Your vote wont change your states outcome. .

But the primary elections are an entirely different story.

The presidential primaries determine who will represent the Republicans and the Democrats during the November election. Instead of voting between just 2 candidates, you have the choice of 3 Democrats or 12 Republicans. Unlike the general election, you actually have a chance of voting for your preferred candidate, not just the lesser of two evils.

Voting In Presidential Primary Elections

Voters who registered to vote without stating a political party preference are known as No Party Preference voters. NPP voters were formerly known as “decline-to-state” or DTS voters.

For presidential primary elections: NPP voters will receive a non-partisan ballot that does not include presidential candidates. A nonpartisan ballot contains only the names of candidates for voter-nominated offices and local nonpartisan offices and measures. However, NPP voters may vote in a political party’s partisan election if the political party, by party rule duly noticed to the Secretary of State, authorizes NPP voters to vote in the next presidential primary election. An NPP voter may request the ballot of one of the political parties, if any, that authorizes NPP voters to vote in the presidential primary election.

Primary elections

While primary elections are meant to give registered Democrats and Republicans a chance to say who will appear on the ballot in November, New Jerseys more than 2.4 million unaffiliated voters can have a say in the process.

The deadline to change from Republican to Democrat or from Democrat to Republican ahead of the primary elections has already passed. But unaffiliated voters are exempt from it and can cast a ballot in either the Democratic or Republican primaries on Tuesday.

Heres how it works:

An unaffiliated voter can walk into their polling station Tuesday and request a Republican or Democratic ballot and then cast their vote.

But theres a caveat.

That person is then registered under that party affiliation.

That means if you vote in the Democratic primary, youre now a registered Democrat. If you vote in the Republican primary, youre now a registered Republican.

But an unaffiliated voter who declares a party by voting in the primary can return to their unaffiliated status after the primary by re-registering as an unaffiliated voter, according to the states Division of Elections.

New Jerseyans can check whether theyre registered to vote at the Department of States Division of Elections website. If voters want to look up their party affiliation, they can create a free online account with the Division of Elections that allows them to access their detailed voting information.

Some Democrats Are Voting In The Texas Gop Primaries Will It Make A Difference

Texas voters who go to the polls Tuesday will be asked in which primary they want to participate the Republican or the Democratic? Texas has an open primary system, so voters are free to choose. But what happens if someone votes in the other partys primary in order to be a spoiler?

I’m gonna vote in the GOP primary for that very reason,” said K. Monroe, a lifelong Democrat living in Austin. “Let’s get these guys to a primary runoff. Let’s make them burn their war chest money before they face the Democrats in November.

She admits crossing over to vote in the Republican primary to be an agent of chaos.

Well, I’m not alone. I can’t say that I was the one that had this thought,” Monroe said. “A friend of mine shared her strategy with me. And I acted on it, and I don’t think I’m alone.

She said she has no misgivings about voting in bad faith in the GOP primary because she thinks the Republican Party is acting in bad faith with voter restrictions.

I think the Texas GOP threw ethics out the window long, long ago,” Monroe said. “So I think it’s perfectly ethical for me to do what I did in the primary.

Tom Whitehurst is an independent but said hes voted in the past in Republican primaries to be able to cast a meaningful vote, which isnt always the case in the lopsided general elections in Texas.

Harvey Kronberg, the founding editor of the Quorum Report, said hes noticed more people doing just that.

But establishment Democrats say dont do it.

California Primary 2020: Why independents can vote for Democrats, but not for Republicans

Qualified political parties in California may hold presidential primaries in one of two ways:

  • Closed presidential primary only voters indicating a preference for a party may vote for that partys presidential nominee.
  • Modified-closed presidential primary the party also allows voters who did not state a party preference to vote for that partys presidential nominee.

If a qualified political party chooses to hold a modified-closed presidential primary, the party must notify the California Secretary of State no later than the 135th day before Election Day.

Voters who registered to vote without stating a political party preference are known as No Party Preference voters. For information on NPP voters voting in a presidential primary election, please see our webpage on No Party Preference Information.

Democratic Party Chair Says Primary Election Comparison Is False Equivalency

Tom Luna, chairman of the Idaho Republican Party, was unavailable for an interview on Friday but sent a statement to the Idaho Capital Sun saying primary nominees should be selected by voters affiliated with their respective parties.

The Idaho Republican Party joins the Kootenai County Republican Central Committee in condemning any disingenuous or illegitimate attempts of one party to influence the selection of another partys nominees, Luna wrote. In short, dont muck around in another partys primaries and elections.

Brent Regan, chairman of the Kootenai County committee and of the Idaho Freedom Foundation, wrote in a statement on Facebook the same day the story broke that political parties should be free to select their primary nominees without the interference of other political parties.

However, current and past notorious efforts of the Democrat Party have been to aggressively advocate for Democrats to temporarily affiliate with the republican party for the sole purpose of influencing the selection of the Republican nominee for the general election, Regan wrote. These ongoing efforts have apparently inspired the possibility of political retaliation directly against the leadership of the local Democrat central committee.

Do You Have To Vote For The Party Youre Registered With

  • You do not have to vote for the party youre registered with, in a federal, state, or local general election.

  • But in a presidential primary or caucus, depending on your states rules, you may have to vote for the political party youve registered with.
