In March 2007, during a news conference in Staten Island, Bloomberg declared his strong opposition to legislation proposed in Congress calling for a clear timetable for troop withdrawal. He said, “We ask our young men and women to go over and to fight, and if you have a deadline knowing they’re pulling out, how can you expect them to defend this country? How can you expect them to go out and put their lives at risk? I just think that’s untenable and that this is not a responsible piece of legislation. It is totally separate of how we’re conducting the war. It’s totally separate of whether we should have been there. The issue that you asked about is plain and simple: Should the Congress pass a law forcing the president to withdraw troops at a given point in time? I think that is not something that is in the country’s interest or in the military’s interest.”
Has Michael Bloomberg Always Been A Democrat
No. But he was a Democrat before he was a Republican, which was before he was an independent and way before his recent re-embrace of the party. Despite his socially liberal views, Mr. Bloomberg changed parties to run in the Republican mayoral primary in 2001. He registered as an independent midway through his time at City Hall. In 2016, he spoke in support of Hillary Clinton at the Democratic National Convention. In 2018, he officially returned to the party.
Reminder: Michael Bloomberg Was Only Ever A Republican Of Convenience
As Michael Bloomberg inches his way toward a late entrance into the 2020 Democratic primaries, his past as a Republican will no doubt come into focus. But it’s important to recall that Bloomberg was always really a Democrat, and only spent time as a Republican out of short-term convenience.
It all came back to his first political campaign, his run for mayor of New York City in 2001. Though leading up to that point, Bloomberg had been a Democrat, at that point, the Democratic field was already large and crowded.
The Republican Party, however, was desperate to find a plausible candidate to succeed Rudy Giuliani. When Giuliani was elected in 1993, he was the first Republican to do so in the overwhelmingly Democratic city since 1965. With Giuliani out of the picture, the assumption was that things would reset to normal, and a Democrat would be elected. So then Bloomberg steps into the race with an effectively unlimited bank account, and Republicans were all too eager to hand him the nomination.
When it came to the general election, Bloomberg basically promised to continue Giuliani’s tough on crime policies with less drama and to work to rebuild downtown New York City after 9/11.
Bloomberg ended up winning, of course, helped by the fact that Democrats emerged from a bitter runoff deeply divided.
He eventually switched to an independent before coming back home to the Democratic Party.

Former Mayor Michael Bloomberg says he’s a friend to small businesses. But during the Bloomberg Mayoralty, he seemed to use enforcement of city ordinances as a revenue center – not a law enforcement unit. He also substantially increased small businesses water rates, and increased their taxes.
And while a lot of funding, free land and low cost loans were directed toward a few wealthy real estate developers – like Stephen Ross & Related Companies – the small businessmen of NYC were taking an economic beating, just like the residents in the city were taking a beating on affordable housing.

Since 2000, Bloomberg has donated to dozens of candidates for the United States Congress. The candidates have been on both sides of the aisle. In July 2016, Bloomberg spoke at the Democratic National Convention, endorsing former Secretary of State Hillary Clintonâs presidential bid. In June 2018, Bloomberg announced he would spend $80 million to support Democratic candidates in an effort to reverse control of Congress in the midterm elections.

Former New York mayor Mike Bloomberg plans to spend at least $100 million in Florida to help elect Democrat Joe Biden, a massive late-stage infusion of cash that could reshape the presidential contest in a costly toss-up state central to President Trumps reelection hopes.
Bloomberg made the decision to focus his final election spending on Florida last week, after news reports that Trump had considered spending as much as $100 million of his own money in the final weeks of the campaign, Bloombergs advisers said. Presented with several options on how to make good on an earlier promise to help elect Biden, Bloomberg decided that a narrow focus on Florida was the best use of his money.
The presidents campaign has long treated the state, which Trump now calls home, as a top priority, and his advisers remain confident in his chances given strong turnout in 2016 and 2018 that gave Republicans narrow winning margins in statewide contests.
Voting starts on Sept. 24 in Florida, so the need to inject real capital in that state quickly is an urgent need, Bloomberg adviser Kevin Sheekey said. Mike believes that by investing in Florida, it will allow campaign resources and other Democratic resources to be used in other states, in particular the state of Pennsylvania.
Save NYC instead, he added.
The spending will focus mostly on television and digital ads, in English and Spanish.

Nyc Homelessness Doubles To 54000 Including 23000 School Age Children
Another ‘accomplishment’ of former Mayor Michael Bloomberg was his unmitigated failure in addressing the rising causes of homelessness in New York City. During his administration New York City homelessness rose from about 27,000 to about 54,000 – of which about 23,000 were believed to be school age children – according to the NYC Department of Homeless Services.
Here’s an excerpt from an OpEd published in the Gotham Gazette, a non-profit website run by the Citizens Union Foundation. There’s no date on it, but it references the 2012 Census, so I’m guessing that it was published in 2013, the last year of former Mayor Bloomberg’s third and final term.
“At the beginning of Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s second term, homelessness in his city was at an all-time high: Nearly 40,000 New Yorkers were without homes, which was astronomical considering the city’s homeless population had never reached 30,000 before Bloomberg took office … Eight years later, 48,694 people were homeless, according to the New York City Department of Homeless Services … What went wrong? … The administration’s critics might say that the mayor’s housing policies failed because he’s out of touch with most New Yorkers.”

The mayoralty of Michael Bloomberg began on January 1, 2002, when Michael Bloomberg was inaugurated as the 108thmayor of New York City, and ended on December 31, 2013.
Bloomberg was known as a political pragmatist and for a managerial style that reflected his experience in the private sector. Bloomberg chose to apply a statistical, results-based approach to city management, appointing city commissioners based on their expertise and granting them wide autonomy in their decision-making. Breaking with 190 years of tradition, Bloomberg implemented a “bullpen” open plan office, reminiscent of a Wall Streettrading floor, in which dozens of aides and managerial staff are seated together in a large chamber. The design was intended to promote accountability and accessibility. At the end of Bloomberg’s three terms, the New York Times said, “New York is once again a thriving, appealing city where the crime rate is down, the transportation system is more efficient, the environment is cleaner.”

And several months before Mr. Bloomberg announced his 2001 bid to fill the looming vacancy at City Hall, some of those friends were worried about him. One of them, Senator John McCain, sent word to the sitting mayor, Rudolph W. Giuliani, asking him to talk Mr. Bloomberg through the grim realities of what even some aides viewed as an electoral suicide mission.
Mr. Giuliani agreed. Youre going to lose, he told Mr. Bloomberg flatly during a meeting at the mayoral residence, Gracie Mansion. This position was sensible. Mr. Bloomberg, a rhetorically challenged political newcomer and longtime Democrat, would be running as a Republican in a Democratic town that had grown weary of its Republican incumbent.
The warning was no use. Mr. Bloomberg had been paying people for months to explain these risks to him. The next morning, he often said privately, imagining the day after a defeat, Im still better off than the next guy.
He never much improved as a candidate. By January, he was mayor anyway.
In a flash, the October endorsement from Mr. Giuliani, the lame-duck leader suddenly elevated to temporary political deity, also became the highest of municipal blessings.

Between 2010 and 2017, a “pay-to-play” scheme went along between two Turner Construction executives, two Bloomberg executives and vendors and subcontractors involving interior construction at the Bloomberg offices including its headquarters at 731 Lexington Ave. In July 2020, Bloomberg’s construction manager Michael Campana was sentenced to two years in prison for tax evasion on $420,000 in connection with accepting bribery. The bribery was in the form of cash, work on personal property, Super Bowl tickets and payment for Campana’s wedding. On September 29, 2020, Anthony Guzzone, the Director of Global Construction at Bloomberg from 2010 and 2017, pleaded guilty to evading taxes on over $1.45 million he received in bribes from construction subcontractors in exchange for being awarded work performed for Bloomberg.

I stumbled across this story as Mayor Bloomberg seemed ready to break apart one of most successful – if not the most successful public school in Queens. As I began to do my research to get up to speed on the issue, it became apparent to me what former Mayor Bloomberg and his investment fund friends were doing was breaking the NYC public school system into two systems – one that RECRUITED the best students into for profit privately managed charter schools, and one that would be run by the public sector that included those left behind.

In this manner Bloomberg & the Republicans could create and maintain the MYTH that charter schools perform better than public schools. The reality seems to be that charter schools RECRUIT more motivated families / students out of the public schools – but don’t do a better job of educating them.
This seemed near criminal to me that they would privatize the profits, while socializing the costs of the public school system. Disdains Democracy: Overturns Mayoral Term Limits
In 2008, just a year before former Mayor Michael Bloomberg was about to be term limited out of the Mayor’s Office, he convinced the NYC City Council to override the plebiscite that term limited his time in office as the Mayor.
Thus Michael Bloomberg sought and won a third term – which he essentially bought – by funding his campaign with nearly $100 million of his own money, to defeat an relatively unknown candidate, retiring City Comptroller Bill Thompson.
Thompson was not given much support by the Democratic Party in that election, likely because they didn’t believe he would do anywhere near as well as he did, and they were competing with a billionaire who could / would and did greatly outspend the competition. The final vote was 50.7% for Bloomberg and 46.3% for Thompson.

Both events drew supporters, as well as those who are undecided but wanted to hear what the candidate had to say.
“I wanted to hear about his initiative and see what he could bring to this wealth gap we have in Wisconsin and the nation,” said Antoine Gosa of Racine, who brought his teenage daughter along to the Milwaukee event.
David Meister of Fox Point, who sported a Bloomberg sticker on his jacket, said he volunteered for the campaign the first day his candidacy was announced. “I used to travel to New York once a month on business and I saw that he transformed the city,” he said.
Bloomberg’s Madison office was packed with Democratic and Bloomberg supporters much to the pleasure of campaign staffers.
Jeff Lennberg and his wife, Gretchen Schultz-Lennberg, of Cottage Grove, came to the Madison event with open minds.
While they plan to support whoever wins the Democratic nomination come November, Lennberg said he is still undecided in the primary.
I like Mike Bloombergs more moderate approach, Lennberg said. Youre going to get a lot more done. The extreme left, the extreme right, they cant come together in any way whatsoever.”
He knows how to get to certain people who are more moderate in the Senate in the House of Representatives and work together.
Jeanne Wright, of Mount Horeb in Dane County, also came to learn more about Bloomberg and seemed to like what she heard.
