The Political Climate Nationally And In Texas Isnt Favorable For Democrats

The current political context is very different from when ORourke last ran statewide in Texas. In 2018, he was able to capitalize on what turned out to be a blue wave nationally with Democrats harnessing public outrage against the Trump presidency to their advantage. In Texas alone, Democrats picked up 12 seats in the state house, flipped two congressional seats, and narrowed the margins in difficult districts.

In 2021, there is no Trump to rally Democrats against. Nor is there a popular president: Bidens approval ratings have been underwater for months, slipping to 41 percent as of October. That rising concerns about inflation and supply chain disruptions have come at a moment when Democrats are in power doesnt help the partys position. And polling has shown that a slight majority of voters plan to vote for Republican candidates in the midterms.

The Texas Republican Party also emerged from the 2020 election even stronger than it was before. Democrats didnt take the state house as they had hoped, giving Republicans the opportunity to redraw the state electoral maps in their favor for the next decade. Trump made significant inroads in heavily Latino border districts, throwing doubt on Democrats theory that the states changing demography will bring about an inevitable blue wave. And Republicans felt the results gave them a clear mandate, marking the return of culture war-type issues that most energize their base in the Texas legislature.

GARLAND, Texas Tea party firebrand Allen West, a candidate for the Republican nomination for governor of Texas, said Saturday that he has received monoclonal antibody injections after being diagnosed with COVID-19 pneumonia.

The antibodies are used to treat those in the early stages of a coronavirus infection.

He also said his wife, Angela West, also tested positive and has received monoclonal antibodies. , Allen West did not get vaccinated against the virus, but his wife did.

Allen West on Thursday said he had attended a packed house Mission Generation Annual Gala & Fundraiser in Seabrook, Texas. On Saturday he tweeted that he is suspending in-person events until receiving an all-clear indication.

West is a former Texas Republican Party chair and Florida congressman. He announced in July that he would challenge Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, who is running for a third term and has been endorsed by Donald Trump.

Wests announcement came a month after he resigned as chair of the Republican Party of Texas.

West won a U.S. House seat in Florida in 2010 and quickly became a tea party favorite and lightning rod, at one point accusing Democrats of having as many as 80 communists in their House caucus. He failed to win reelection in 2012.

PLANO, Texas Tea party firebrand Allen West, a candidate for the Republican nomination for governor of Texas, was hospitalized with COVID-19 on Sunday but said he’s doing great.

No complaints. Im just relaxing, West told The Associated Press during a brief phone interview from a hospital in the Dallas suburb of Plano. He said he got a good night’s rest and was awaiting the results of an early morning chest X-ray.

West and his wife, Angela West, were diagnosed with the virus after attending a packed house fundraising event in Seabrook, Texas, last week. He said Saturday that he is suspending in-person events until receiving an all-clear indication.

Both Wests received monoclonal antibody treatments for COVID-19 and Angela, who was vaccinated against the virus, was released to go home, Allen West said on Twitter. The Republican candidate said he has not gotten a coronavirus vaccination and that doctors were worried Saturday about the lowered level of oxygen saturation in his blood.

West said on Twitter Sunday that, if elected governor, he would vehemently crush anyone forcing vaccine mandates in Texas.

Paid Sick Leave Ordinance

On November 16, 2018, the ruled Austin’s paid sick leave ordinance was unconstitutional, saying it was preempted by the state’s minimum wage law.

The Texas Public Policy Foundation filed a lawsuit against the city of Austin in district court on April 24, 2018, regarding the city’s paid sick leave ordinance. As passed, the ordinance required private businesses to provide paid sick leave and safe leave of up to eight calendar days per year. It allowed employees who work at least 80 hours in a calendar year to accrue paid sick and safe leave at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked. The ordinance was set to go into effect on October 1, 2018, for businesses with five or more employees, and on October 1, 2020, for smaller employers.

The Texas Public Policy Foundation, representing several plaintiffs including the Texas Association of Business and the National Federation of Independent Business, argued the ordinance violated the Texas Constitution and preempted state minimum wage law. Jeff Moseley, CEO of the Texas Business Administration, said the organization thought “the best place for sick leave to be settled is with the employer and employee, not with some vague and unenforceable ordinance.” Will Newton, state executive director of the National Federation of Independent Businesses, said Austin’s ordinance would “create a patchwork of rules and regulations that are difficult for small businesses to navigate.” Texas filed an intervening plea in support of the lawsuit.

Earlier this month, former President Donald Trump scrawled a celebratory note on a polling memo that appeared to point to a big win for a new ally.

David Good! Im all in, Trump wrote across the top of the document to David McIntosh, the influential head of the anti-tax Club for Growth. The memo summarized a May survey showing Texas Republican Susan Wright, who Trump had endorsed at McIntoshs recommendation during a meeting at his Mar-a-Lago resort, with a big 17-point lead over her Republican opponent in a House special election.

Now, Trump and his advisers are trying to figure out what Wrights defeat means for them and how to contain any damage. Her loss Tuesday night sent shockwaves through the former presidents inner circle. Many privately concede the pressure is on them to win another special election next week in Ohio, where a Trump-backed candidate is locked in a close primary.

A loss is a loss, and for someone who touts himself as the ultimate winner, putting your thumb on the scale and then losing tarnishes that brand within the party, said Doug Heye, a former top Republican National Committee official.

How The Primary Works

A primary election is an election in which registered voters select a candidate that they believe should be a political party’s candidate for elected office to run in the general election. They are also used to choose convention delegates and party leaders. Primaries are state-level and local-level elections that take place prior to a general election. SAN ANTONIO For as long as María Rodríguez can remember, the South Side of San Antonio has just about always elected Democrats, Hispanics like herself who emphasized improving public education and access to health care.

But last week, as she walked out of an early polling site where she had cast a ballot in a tightly contested runoff for an open State House seat, Ms. Rodríguez, 55, wondered whether her once solidly Democratic district might flip.

This time, there was a strong chance that the Republican candidate, a Latino who briefly held the seat in 2016 and received the most votes in last months five-way special election, could emerge the victor and represent Ms. Rodríguez and about 160,000 of her mostly Latino neighbors.

Im nervous, she said.

The contest for the vacant seat in the 118th District has exposed the vulnerabilities of a traditionally Democratic stronghold, as Republicans make an all-out effort to gain ground with Latino voters in South Texas. It also has tested the progress of a Republican Party that has openly courted those voters, who have cited a range of grievances, from rising crime and faltering infrastructure to feeling abandoned by Democrats.

At the three early voting sites across the district, traffic over the past few days has been steady but slow.
