Super Bowl XLVI: Giants vs. Patriots highlights

The New England Patriots will meet the New York Giants in Week 3 of the NFL Preseason on Sunday evening from MetLife Stadium.

The Patriots are coming off a blowout 35-0 win over the Eagles in their last preseason game and will look to iron out the QB controversy in their last game before the regular season. Will it be Mac Jones or Cam? Meanwhile, the Giants will look to bounce back after losing 17-13 to the Browns in their second preseason game.

This will be a great Sunday of NFL football, here is everything you need to know to stream the NFL action today.

New York Giants Preview

The New York Giants are set to finally unleash their starters who sat out the preseason, on Sunday afternoon. Giants head coach Joe Judge told the media this week that his starters will play a ‘minimum’ of one half against the Patriots.

Star running back Saquon Barkley, who is still recovering from a serious knee injury, will not play, nor will veteran tight end Kyle Rudolph, though.

S2010s: Tom Brady Vs Eli Manning

In 2000, Belichick became the Patriots head coach, and the following season, promoted Tom Brady to starting quarterback. This era would produce six Super Bowl championships for the Patriots, but also oversaw three defeats in the title game. In the 2004 season, Coughlin was hired by the Giants as head coach, and by the middle of the season, promoted Eli Manning to starter.

The first meeting between Brady and Eli Manning came in the final week of the 2007 season. New England entered the game holding a 150 record and were attempting to finish the regular season undefeated. Meanwhile, the Giants won a wild-card spot and had nothing to play for. However, New York played their starters throughout in an attempt to spoil the Patriots’ perfect season. In the end, New England won the game 3835 to finish 160, with Brady connecting for a then-record 50th touchdown pass to Randy Moss.

The Patriots met the Giants again in Super Bowl XLII in an attempt to finish with a 190 season. However, in one of the greatest upsets in NFL history, the Giants defeated the Patriots 1714 to win the championship. With the Patriots leading 1410 late in the fourth quarter, Manning generated a key go-ahead scoring drive, highlighted by the now-famous Helmet Catch to David Tyree. The winning points were scored on a touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress, and the Giants defense forced the Patriots into a turnover on downs on their final possession.

Through the initial August exhibitions, Cam Newton started and played a total of five series. In the finale, the incumbent Patriots quarterback started and stayed in for two. A 2-of-5 passing line was accrued.

Newton, who returned from his Covid-19 protocol-related absence on Thursday, threw for 10 yards. A dart to a diving Jakobi Meyers in the flat would be the first attempt. The next drive, a third-and-7 became an interception intended for the wide receiver deep down the seam. The well-placed ball into tight coverage was one that Giants linebacker Blake Martinez ripped away.

Mac Jones entered New Englands huddle at the 11:20 mark in the second quarter. The No. 15 overall pick out of Alabama was flagged for delay of game moments later. But Jones went 10-of-14 through the air for 156 yards versus New York. He found wideout Kristian Wilkerson on a dig route for 21 yards and tight end Devin Asiasi for 19 yards on a drag into space. Jones then hit receiver Isaiah Zuber for a touchdown from 17 yards away to begin the third frame. The pair nearly combined for another next time out on a fade. Jones was sacked on four occasions. Brian Hoyer grabbed his helmet in the fourth quarter.

On December 29, 2007, during the final week of the 2007 season, the New England Patriots defeated the New York Giants, 3835, at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. In what became a preview of Super Bowl XLII, the game was a close comeback win for the Patriots, giving them the first undefeated regular season since the 1972 Miami Dolphins and the only undefeated regular season since the league expanded to 16 games.

While the game was originally notable for its television coverage, the teams would later meet in Super Bowl XLII, in which the Giants won 1714, ending the Patriots’ hopes of a perfect season.

Super Bowl XLII: Ruining the Perfect Season: The Patriots were the clear favorites ahead of Super Bowl XLII after the 2007 season. New England did not lose a game in the regular season or playoffs leading up to the Super Bowl. With a win, the Patriots would have earned just the second perfect season in NFL history . The Giants had a 10-6 record in the regular season and made the playoffs as a wild card team. The Patriots led late in the fourth quarter after a touchdown pass from Tom Brady to Randy Moss. The TD put the Patriots up by four. The Giants next drive became one of the most famous in the history of the Super Bowl. On a play that looked like it would end in a sack, Eli Manning scrambled and lobbed a pass down the field. Giants receiver David Tyree made what is known now as the Helmet Catch. He made a leaping grab for the football and brought it down against his helmet for the catch. The play set up a game winning touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress. The Giants win is one of the biggest upsets in all of pro sports.

Kevin Abrams Is Sticking Around

There was a time when many thought long-time Giants Assistant General Manager Kevin Abrams would simply ascend to the GM job when Dave Gettleman was done. Then, when Gettleman retired, Abrams didnt even get an interview for the job that went to Joe Schoen.

That led many of those same people to wonder if Abrams had a future in the organization.

It certainly seems as though Abrams isnt going anywhere.

Kevins been really good hes been a tremendous resource for me, Schoen said on Monday. I will continue to lean on him.

Abrams has been with the Giants since 1999 and has held the assistant GM title for 20 years.

Schoen said that Abrams could end up with a different title.

Kevin is very humble and selfless, Schoen said. If for some reason we decide that we need that assistant GM title to get someone else, he has offered that up. We havent crossed that bridge.

In The Secondary After The Wade Trade

New England acquired rookie cornerback Shaun Wade from the Baltimore Ravens four days prior to the preseason finale in exchange for a 2022 seventh-rounder and a 2023 fifth-rounder. His debut in East Rutherford began on special teams. It continued before intermission on defense. And on the outside, where press-man technique gave way to an incompletion down the right sideline. Wade played the remainder. He was the nearest Patriot on a 43-yard touchdown catch by wideout Damion Willis with eight seconds left.

Wade had fallen to pick No. 160 overall in the spring after returning to Ohio State as a redshirt junior last fall. Abdominal surgery, turf toe and challenges moving away from a slot role were among the factors. But his stay with the Buckeyes concluded as a consensus All-American and the Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year.

The Patriots started J.C. Jackson, DAngelo Ross, Jalen Mills, Adrian Phillips and Devin McCourty in the secondary versus the Giants. As the page turned to the second unit, Joejuan Williams, Justin Bethel, Adrian Colbert and Michael Jackson Sr. all joined Ross. The practice squad alum proceeded to intercept an errant pass in the end zone while playing safety. Its an area to monitor with the active roster reducing from 80 by 4 p.m. ET Tuesday. Stephon Gilmore remains on physically unable to perform and neither Jonathan Jones nor Myles Bryant were in uniform.

Lockstep With Joe Schoen

New England Patriots vs. New York Giants | Preseason Week 3 2021 NFL Game Highlights

The Giants new GM said last week that he wanted a head coach he was in lockstep with as they tried to build a winning program. He and Daboll worked together in Buffalo for four seasons. Did having a GM he was already familiar with make the Giants job more appealing to him?

I think theres some foundational pillars that help an organization. Thats not necessarily going to make you win. Its hard to win in this league, as we all know. The leadership group between ownership, management, general manager, head coach, I think, is a really important piece. Those guys have to be aligned. When youre not aligned, thats when things start going astray, Daboll said. Again, Im not guaranteeing that were going to do anything. I just think that alignment is so critical because when youre aligned, you can communicate well with one another and you can develop a plan, and that plans going to be important. Were starting from scratch and theres a lot of things that weve got to get done and after that plan, now were looking to bring in the right kind of people. To answer your question, yes. I think its absolutely important that we have shared alignment, shared vision, shared core principles and values of the type of people we want to bring in.

How will Daboll and Schoen handle personnel decisions? Will the GM ask for specific players, or simply specific types of players?

INDIANAPOLIS The Giants did it to Brady and the Patriots again.

From Justin Tuck’s sack for a safety and Victor Cruz’s touchdown early to Manning-to-Manningham and then Ahmad Bradshaw’s reluctant touchdown late, the Giants were set up for their second Super Bowl victory at New England’s expense in five years.

They still had to withstand a Brady Hail Mary that fell incomplete in the end zone, just out of the reach of a diving Rob Gronkowski.

Rivalry Players And Coaches

Bill Belichick: Patriots head coach from 2000-Present. No single individual has been more involved in the Patriots – Giants Rivalry than Bill Belichick. He coached the Patriots during each of their Super Bowl matchups against the Giants, and has turned New England into one of the greatest sports dynasties of the 21st Century.

Tom Coughlin: Former Giants Head Coach from 2004-2015. Tom Coughlin was the Giants head coach for each of their Super Bowl’s against the Patriots, coming out on top both times.

Tom Brady: Former Patriots quarterback from 2000-2019. Tom Brady is largely considered one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history, and his nearly perfect season during the 2007-2008 NFL season is a sizable argument in his favor. He twice lost against the Giants in the Super Bowl, which is one of the few stains on his legendary career.

Eli Manning: Former Giants quarterback from 2004-2019. Eli Manning was the long-time quarterback for the Giants, and spent his entire pro career with the franchise. He is best known for having twice defeated Tom Brady and the Patriots in the Super Bowl.

David Tyree: Former Giants wide receiver from 2003-2008. While the entire body of Tyree’s career isn’t exactly as noteworthy as other members of this list, he was front and center for one of the most dramatic moments in Super Bowl history. It was his “helmet catch” that allowed the Giants a chance to rally back and defeat the nearly undefeated Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.

Patriots Vs Giants Prediction

The New York Giants have yet to win a game this NFL preseason, and face a tough test against the Patriots’ on Sunday afternoon at the MetLife Stadium.

With Cam Newton and Mac Jones still trying to win the starting quarterback job, New England should have enough offensive firepower to remain undefeated in the NFL 2021 preseason.

New England to win an entertaining game 24-17.

What Was The Helmet Catch

Giants vs. Patriots halftime score: Giants lead, 6

The “Helmet Catch” was a famous, miraculous play made by Giants’ quarterback Eli Manning and wide receiver David Tyree in the final minutes of Super Bowl XLII in 2008. The Giants were down 14-10 in the game’s fourth and final quarter, looking to make a comeback against the dominant New England team. In the final two minutes of the game, on third down and 5 from the Giants’ 44-yard line, Eli Manning managed to escape the Patriots’ defensive line and make a pass before being tackled by Patriots’ linebacker Mike Vrabel. The pass was caught by David Tyree, who made a running leap for the ball while being pursued by Patriots’ strong safety Rodney Harrison. Though the ball was caught awkwardly, Tyree miraculously managed to retain possession of it by pinning it to his helmet with his right hand, securing a 32-yard conversion for a first down, which the Giants then used to score the winning touchdown of the game. To this day, the catch is considered to be one of the greatest Super Bowl plays of all time.

Against The Spread Pick

The Patriots have been enjoying the 2021 preseason so far with a 2-0 SU record and have outscored their opponents 57-13. However, the success has been overlooked by the QB battle between the rookie Jones and veteran Newton.

The best ability is availability and Jones seized advantage of that this week, as he took the majority of the first-team reps in the Pats first joint practice versus the Giants with Newton spending five days away from camp due to COVID protocols. Newton did return and took the first-team reps on Thursday which opens the door for both these quarterbacks to get ample playing time Sunday, which is great news for New England backers.

On top of having two competent QBs likely to play throughout the game, the New England rushing game has also been on point in the preseason so good in fact that they shipped Sony Michel to the Rams earlier in the week. Through two games, the Pats have rushed for 386 yards and six scores. If the Giants struggle to move the sticks versus this stout New England defense like they did in the two joint practices, Bill Belichick and Co. could be playing keep away from Daniel Jones and the NYG offense.

We are high on the Giants offense this year, but with so many missing pieces Sunday and facing a legit defense, this isnt the spot for us. The Pats have two QBs with a lot to play for and a rushing game that could tilt the field.

Saquon Barkley Injury Update

Barkley returned to some full-team drills during a joint practice with the New England Patriots this week, but did so while wearing a red non-contact jersey. Giants head coach Joe Judge told reporters this week that the goal is to get Barkley into some contact situations, prior to the season opener.

Uche At A Different Frame Rate

Giants vs. Patriots Week 6 Highlights | NFL 2019

Some linebackers move at a different frame rate on the screen. All pixels point toward the second pick in the 2020 Patriots draft class being one of them.

Josh Uche notched a sack in the summer finale on the first drive, beating Giants left tackle Andrew Thomas to take down signal-caller Daniel Jones. It went for a loss of six and forced a punt. And it kept the trend going for a hybrid who found the backfield as a one-year Michigan starter and did the same in a limited rookie sample.

Pro Football Focus charted Uche for three hurries through his first two games of the preseason. Those hurries transpired over 17 snaps in pass rush. More were added on Sunday. Theres a place on the field for speed. Even in the company of March signings Matthew Judon and Kyle Van Noy, the Patriots appear set to find it more so off the edges than off the ball. Uche would be on the field for a pocket-collapsing sack split between inside linebacker JaWhaun Bentley and defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. And in the second quarter, hed also be in the face of New Yorks quarterback to force an interception down at the goal line.

Another Hilarious Cam Newton Gif

The 2015 NFL MVP was determined not to be denied on a high five attempts after Mac Jones led the team on a scoring drive:

Hoyer and the Patriots driving with just under 3 minutes remaining in the game. Lots of backups on the field trying to make one last impression to coaches.

Patriots have some noteworthy guys still on the field late in the fourth quarter, including Chase Winovich, Henry Anderson and Bill Murray, who just got consecutive sacks as New England is teeing off on Mike Glennon.

Interesting to see Henry Anderson and Chase Winovich still out here. Anderson has $3 million guaranteed.

Hoyer leads the Patriots on a scoring drive that results in a 37-yard field goal from Quinn Nordin. The rookie kicker has seemingly righted the ship after a shaky performance last week against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Nice bounce back from Quinn Nordin.

Patriots lead 22-14 with just under 7 minutes remaining. Has Nordin done enough to beat out Nick Folk? Probably not, but maybe hell be on the practice squad.

NFL Networks Mike Giardi has perhaps the understatement of the Patriots preseason with this one:

JJ Taylor is fun.

Michael Giardi

Taylor has been fantastic this preseason as a runner, receiver and return guy. Hes got some Tarik Cohen and Darren Sproles vibes.
