Patriots Jones End Season With A Dud In 47

After gaining so much ground during Mac Jones’ rookie season, the New England Patriots faltered at the finish.

Throttled 47-17 by the Buffalo Bills in a wild-card playoff game on Saturday night, the loss showed how much progress the Patriots still need to make to close the gap on their AFC East rivals.

“Losing is terrible,” Jones said. “None of us wanted to do that tonight. But there’s nothing we can do about it now. There’s a lot to look forward to and be positive about and learn from.”

Jones and the Patriots made strides turning around their season following a 2-4 start, putting together a seven-game win streak to make the playoffs for the first time in two seasons since Tom Brady left New England for Tampa Bay.

But their progress stalled after a 14-10 win at Buffalo in Week 13 put them atop the division standings. The Patriots struggled coming out of their bye week, losing three of four, before suffering their worst postseason defeat since a 46-10 loss to the 1985 Chicago Bears.

The loss was the most lopsided in the playoffs during Bill Belichick’s tenure, which began in 2000, and second-worst overall after Buffalo opened the 2003 season with a 31-0 victory.

The Bills dominated the Patriots in this one, much like they were once dominated by New England.

Buffalo became the NFL’s first team to score touchdowns on each of its seven possessions not ending with a kneeldown. And the 47 points scored were the most against a Belichick-coached Patriots team.

Patriots Place Defensive Back On Reserve/covid List Sign Two Players To Practice Squad

Where to watch, listen to Bears

The Patriots started the week by placing one player in the NFLs reserve/COVID list. Cornerback Shaun Wade was added to the list on Monday, per ESPNs Mike Reiss.

This move doesnt come as a surprise given Wade was announced as a late scratch before Sundays game against Miami due to an illness. Its not known whether or not Wade traveled with the team to Miami.

Wade becomes the third player on the Patriots active roster added to the reserve/COVID list, joining tackle Yodny Cajuste and defensive back Myles Bryant. Both Cajuste and Bryant were added to the list last week. Practice squad tackle William Sherman is also on the list.

Acquired by the Patriots via trade late in training camp, Wade has been a healthy scratch for most of the season. He played in three games, recording one tackle on 18 snaps. Wade was originally drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the fifth round last spring.

The Patriots also signed two players to their practice squad, wide receiver Jaylen Smith and cornerback D.J. Daniel. Both players were in Foxborough for free agent workouts last week. With those moves, the Patriots have three open spots remaining on the practice squad.

Listen: Bill Belichick Identifies Biggest Issue In Game For Patriots Vs Bills

Sunday was not a great day for the Patriots against the Bills.

In the 33-21 loss, the defense had no answer for Josh Allen and then offensively, it took awhile for things to really get going.

Appearing on The Greg Hill Show Monday morning, Bill Belichick pinpointed the biggest issue in the the game — third down, both on offense and defense.

I think there were a lot of things we did well, we just didnt do them well enough, often enough,” he said . “Obviously, the biggest problem in the game was third down. Had we done a better job on third down then things probably would have looked differently. Third and fourth down on defense, a combination of it. We were 1-for-10 on third down on offense. And then 6-for-12 and they were 3-for-4 on fourth down. That would have been a big factor in the game had we done that better.”

Belichick added: We had some long-yardage situations. They werent all third-and-10s, but there were some and that was a problem. Just in general, we didnt do very well on third down. On a couple of them we converted on fourth down, but just overall our third down offensive and defensive execution just wasnt good enough against a team like Buffalo.

The loss drops the Patriots to 9-6 on the season and currently the No. 6 seed in the conference. So, while the AFC East may no longer be in their sights, the playoffs still very much are.
