Republican Election Deniers Quiet On Fraud Claims After Primary Wins

Nevada Republican Jim Marchant insisted there hadnt been a legitimate election in his state in more than a decade. All of Nevadas election winners since 2006, he said on a recent podcast, were installed by the deep-state cabal.

But when Marchant won the Republican nomination for Nevada secretary of state this week, he immediately celebrated the victory as legitimate.

I am beyond humbled by the overwhelming support of our campaign. Nevadans made their voices heard, Marchant declared on social media.

Such inconsistency has become a hallmark of election deniers in Republican primary contests across the U.S. in this years midterms. Dozens of GOP candidates who sought former President Donald Trumps backing in Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and elsewhere have spent months parroting his baseless claims of 2020 election fraud but then declared victory without raising such concerns in their own elections.

Amid such seeming hypocrisy, many Republican candidates are still vowing to pursue a series of election reforms that could make it more difficult to vote particularly for those who traditionally support Democrats in the name of election integrity.

Democratic National Committee Chair Jamie Harrison warned that MAGA Republicans will do anything in their desperate chase for power.

The phenomenon extends well beyond Nevada.

Mastriano made no mention of voter fraud as he declared victory in Pennsylvanias Republican primary for governor last month.

Arizonas Gop Primaries Went Full Maga Now Democrats Think They Have A Shot

There might have been a path to victory in the Republican primary in Arizona on Tuesday for statewide candidates who vigorously defended the 2020 election results and made support for the democratic process a cornerstone of their campaigns.

But no one tried to chart it.

Instead, candidates in crowded primaries for governor, U.S. Senate, attorney general and secretary of state almost uniformly sought former president Donald Trumps approval and support from his base by aligning themselves with the contention that the 2020 election was stolen. For those who got the endorsement, it proved critical.

In the governors race, former TV news anchor Kari Lake is leading wealthy self-funder Karrin Taylor Robson, despite Robsons support from Gov. Doug Ducey and former vice president Mike Pence. The $15 million Robson invested in her own campaign took her from zero name recognition to neck-and-neck with Lake. But that likely wont be enough to beat the sledgehammer-toting Lake, whose frequent election denialism snagged her Trumps early and enthusiastic support.

The Trump endorsement reliably netted at least one-third of primary voters. And for crowded races, that was enough.

Arizona Democrats quietly celebrated the Trump slates victories, believing they now have a solid shot in November.

Capitol Riots Loom Large In Republican Primaries

Tuesday’s primary election results were not a clean sweep for Donald Trump and the candidates he backed. But they did show the power his false claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him continue to have within the party.

Any candidate who wants his backing has to sign up to the so-called “Big Lie”.

His support is very valuable – if not always a guarantee of success. So many of the candidates in Republican races repeat his claims that the 2020 vote was rigged against him. The biggest winners last night were some of the most vehement election deniers.

In Pennsylvania, the far-right Doug Mastriano won in a landslide to become the Republican candidate for Governor of the state in November. He was at the Stop The Steal rally in Washington on 6 January, 2021 – the gathering that preceded the storming of the US Capitol – although he denies actually attending the riot. He has actively fought to overturn the 2020 result and argues that elected state officials can overturn the popular vote. If voted in as Pennsylvania governor – a key swing state – he will have a role in overseeing the 2024 presidential election.

Further south in North Carolina, a Trump-backed congressman, Ted Budd, won the Republican nomination for the Senate. He also would not say that President Biden legitimately won the 2020 election. In Congress last year he voted against certifying the results and pushed conspiracy theories about how the election was rigged.

Tudor Dixon Nominee For Michigan Governor

Dixon, a conservative radio host and activist, will be the Republican nominee facing Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who led the state during the 2020 presidential election. Mr. Biden beat Trump in the Midwestern state by 154,188 votes, just under 3 points.

In 2016, Trump won Michigan by 10,704 votes.

In one primary debate, Dixon had raised her hand along with the rest of the Republican gubernatorial field when asked if there was enough fraud to impact the 2020 election results. In another debate she asked if she believed Trump had legitimately won the state. She replied, “Yes.”

Days after the November election in 2020, Dixon tweeted the election had been stolen and said Democrats committed “sloppy and obvious” voter fraud, according to Bridge Michigan, but offered no evidence to support her claim.

However, in an interview last week with “Fox News Sunday,” Dixon did not explicitly say she thought the 2020 election was stolen. Instead, she directed her criticism at Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson.

“We have to make sure our elections are secure and what happened in 2020 doesn’t happen again,” she told Fox News. “We are calling for common-sense election law.”

Primary elections and caucuses can be binding or nonbinding in allocating delegates to the respective state delegations to the Republican National Convention. But the actual election of the delegates can be at a later date. Delegates are elected at conventions, from slates submitted by the candidates, selected by the party’s state chairman or at committee meetings or elected directly at the party’s caucuses and primaries. Is It Common For Democrats To Participate In The Republican Primary And Vice Versa

In short, no. According to Elizabeth Simas, a political science professor at the University of Houston who spoke about this with Texas Standard, cases of strategic voting dont happen much in primary elections. Certainly, there are people who do it but we just dont see it happening as much as theres potentially this fear for it to happen, Simas said.

In areas dominated by one party, especially rural areas, voters might cross party lines in the primary to have more of a say in their local races.

In my county, all the local races are Republican. Judges, sheriff, district attorney, Martha Mims, a Democratic voter who lives Williamson County, wrote in The Texas Tribunes Facebook group, This is Your Texas. If I want to have a say in local government, I have to vote in the Republican primary.

Kari Lake Nominee For Arizona Governor

Trump-backed former TV news anchor Kari Lake won a tight race over opponent Karrin Taylor Robson, the lawyer endorsed by former Vice President Mike Pence and the state’s sitting governor, Doug Ducey. It was one of at least three primary showdowns so far this year between the former president’s preferred candidates and those of his vice president.

In a June debate, Lake called the 2020 election “more than unfair” and reiterated the false claim that President Joe Biden “lost the election and shouldn’t be in the White House.” In that same debate, Lake asked her opponents to raise their hand if they thought the election was “stolen.” Robson responded, “I’m not going to play your your stunt.”

Last year, Lake said if she were Arizona’s governor in 2020, she would not have certified Mr. Biden’s win in state. Biden won Arizona , and a controversial audit and hand recount of the ballots in the state’s most populous county actually found Mr. Biden’s lead increased by a couple hundred votes.

Leading up to Tuesday’s primaries, Lake continued to cast doubt on the election process. “We’re already detecting some stealing going on, but you guys know I’m a fighter, right?” she told a conservative group in late July. After her election night remarks late Tuesday night, when ballots were still being counted, Lake repeatedly predicted she’d win as long as “all the legal” ballots were counted.

But after choosing a side in the primary, you have to stay in that lane through the runoff. You cant vote Republican in the primary election and then participate in a runoff election between top Democratic candidates.

John Gibbs Nominee For Congress Michigan’s 3rd District

Gibbs is a former Trump-era Housing and Urban Development official who won his primary challenge against Republican Rep. Peter Meijer, a moderate freshman Congressman who voted to impeach Trump after the Jan. 6 attacks.

During a debate with Meijer in late June, Gibbs claimed there were “anomalies” with the 2020 election results “that are simply mathematically impossible.” On his campaign website, Gibbs calls for a “full forensic audit” of the 2020 election and wrote that there should be an ID required to vote, an elimination of the early voting period and says the “mass mailing of ballots to every voter would be considered corrupt if used in any developing country.”

In 2020, Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, mailed ballot applications not ballots to every registered voter because of the pandemic. This year, Michigan voters applied to receive absentee ballots, and state election officials said that just over half the votes in the primary were absentee ballots.
