Recently the gaming and enthusiast product market has been flooded by RGB illumination in all kinds of ways with many different looks, even memory kits are equipped with LED lighting these days. Its not hard to notice users are split between those who simply love everything flashy and can sacrifice performance at the cost of better looks and those who rather pick high-quality products that offer high performance and stability but are not overpriced because of additional features like RGB lighting.

Patriot has products for both groups of users, in this review, we will focus on the latest memory series, Viper Steel, which was designed to bring top performance for the most demanding users. This memory kit contains two 8 GB modules rated at DDR4-4400 which is also the highest speed offered by Patriot. Lets start with the specifications and features.

Sehr schneller RAM bringt zwar nicht in allen Bereichen auch wirklich mehr Performance, er ist aber trotzdem irgendwie das I-Tüpfelchen in einem auf Performance getrimmten System.

Wer sein System mit sehr schnellem Speicher ausstatten wollte, stand bislang jenseits der 4000 MHz vor einem nicht unerheblichen Problem, die Preise der Speichermodule explodieren geradezu mit steigendem Takt. Für ein paar hundert MHz mehr Takt wird nicht selten dann der doppelte Preis fällig.

Auf der Suche nach schnellem RAM für eines unserer Testsystem sind wir vor Kurzem über ein 4400 MHz Speicherkit gestoßen, dass zum fast unglaublichen Preis von etwa 125 Euro angeboten wird. Die Patriot Viper Steel 4400 mit CL19 Timings sind damit gut 50-60 günstiger als vergleichbare Speicher anderer Hersteller. Wir haben uns diesen Schnapper einmal genauer auf dem neuen Sockel 1200 Mit dem Intel Core i7 10700k angeschaut.

Die Viper Steel aus der Viper Gaming Serie kann man als die Standard-Module von Patriot für fast alle Bereiche ansehen. Die Module sind in den verschiedensten Konfigurationen von 2400 MHz bis hin zu 4400 MHz bei der schnellsten Version erhältlich. Der Preis für ein 16 GB Kit reicht dabei von kleinen 60 für 3000 MHz bis hin zu eben den 125 Euro für die 4400 MHz Variante. Die Timings reichen dabei von CL16 bis CL19.

What We Dont Like About This Ram:

• XMP Editing Needed to Get ValueIf you buy this RAM and dont edit your computers XMP profile, youll probably not get much value from it over say, the Corsair Vengeance running at 3600 MHz.
• Limited Use on Older Mother BoardsIf you have an older motherboard your XMP might not be upgradable to version 2.0. Some cheap computers dont even give you XMP access. So for some users these units are overkill.
• Finicky Set UpGetting RAM to run at 4400 MHz is not easy. There plenty that needs to come together for the performance at that rate to be better than lower rates that mesh better together.

When people talk about premium RAM they generally think Corsair Vengeance or Kingston HyperX. And on a second level would come GSkills Ripjaws and Patriot Viper.

But the Corsair sticks that can run at 4400 MHz cost over $500! At that price, you really have to ask, how much more can you get and how can they justify that price.

The answer weve found is they cant. With Patriots Viper Steel series you get 99.9% of the vengeance series at literally a small fraction of the price. UDIMM Viper DDR4 RAM is really solid. When you pick it up it has the same, and even slightly more heft than its Corsair competitors.

The units are beautiful and will make a great addition to anyone with a glass view computer case.

The speed is amazing. Our #2 pick for DDR4 Desktop RAM is Corsairs Vengeance, but the unit that runs at only 3600 MHz. Thats still great timing though.

For many that buy these Patriot memory modules, 4133 MHz will be the maximum they can achieve. Youll need to switch to XMP 2 to really get the 4400 and then youll also have to dial down the timing and up the voltage.

If your motherboard isnt top of the line, dont expect to get the full experience this RAM offers. If thats the case, you might just want to save the $50 price difference between these units and the Vengeance that we list as our #2 option.

Test Setup And Methodology

The performance of the system shall be evaluated by various benchmarking tools and applications. We are testing this system with the high-performance settings enabled at the OS, with the default UEFI configuration. Background processes such as anti-virus and third-party applications are disabled as well. Outlined below are the applications and benchmark tools for reference:

• Battlefield 4 Ultra Settings | V-SYNC off
• DIRT: Rally Ultra Settings | V-SYNC off
• The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Ultra Settings | HairWorks off | V-SYNC off

The Patriot Viper Steel memory kit we got has a JEDEC standard of 2133MHz with default timings at 14-14-14-35 under 1.20v. At its XMP2.0 settings, the Patriot Viper Steel features a 3200MHz frequency, together with a 16-18-18-36 timing set under 1.35v.

Zero stability issues here with our Z170 based test system. Among the few 3200MHz kits on review to run just fine out of the box. If you have an older generation system, say a Z170 based chipset, then you may add this to your list of possible memory kits to buy.

A 4000 MHz Viper kit, is it an actually a steal?

Today we are reviewing Patriot Viper Steel DDR4 memory. This is a new variant of the Patriot Viper series, which quite surprisingly doesnt have RGB support . Im not saying that theres anything wrong with that, as not everyone likes lighting in their PC. The set from Patriot that we reviewed last time was rated at 3200 MHz, and now were looking at something much faster. 4000 MHz does sound impressive, doesnt it? But thats not all. In this series, youll find memory as fast as 4400 MHz!

The kit that arrived consists of two 8GB 4000 MHz DDR4 modules. Its one of many variants of this series. The other available options are listed below :

• 8 GB 3000 MHz
• 16 GB 3200 MHz KIT
• 16 GB 3866 MHz KIT
• 16 GB 4000 MHz KIT
• 16 GB 4133 MHz KIT
• 16 GB 4400 MHz KIT

Besides the first two models, the range looks very promising and overclocking-friendly because, according to the manufacturers info, its supposed to be based on Samsungs B-Die memory chips.

Quick Ram Shopping Tips

• For many users, 16GB is the current sweet spot. Programs continue to get bigger and require more memory over time whereas 1080p and 4K video formats are more common. PC games are getting more demanding, and websites have become complex by the day. While heavy multitaskers and prosumers may need 32GB to avoid tapping into much slower disk-based virtual memory, 16GB is far more affordable, and sufficient for gaming and mainstream productivity tasks.

• Memory speeds advertised as part of an XMP profile might not be achievable on AMD-based motherboards. XMP is a sort of automatic memory overclocking setting that was designed for Intel motherboards. Some motherboard makers offer BIOS settings to help you achieve these faster speeds on AMD motherboards. But these settings arent present on all motherboards, and they dont always work when they are present.

• Want the fastest RAM speed on an Intel platform? Get a K-series CPU. Non-K-series Core i9, Core i7 and Core i5 processors have the same DDR4-2933 limit as that imposed by Intels lesser H470 and B460 chipsets. Core i3 processors have a lower limit of DDR4-2666. While most motherboards lack XMP, those that have it will more easily configure XMP memory with enhanced timings. Note, though, that these rules have changed with Intel’s latest Rocket Lake platform. Memory overclocking is now available on motherboards with non-Z chipsets.

Overclocking And Timing Optimization

We pushed each kit to its lowest-stable primary timings to see how much performance might be gained by making them quicker, and there were a few standouts: Adatas DDR4-4600 had the worst minimum timings at both DDR4-4000 and DDR4-2400, but somehow tied the Viper Steel for best timings at DDR4-3466. The Asus motherboard obviously makes many behind-the-scenes changes to advanced timings that can impact how far we can tweak the primary timings, but the firm is also known for optimizing performance across most memory brands and settings.

Design Layout And Build Quality

The Patriot Viper Steel is a sharp looking memory kit with a brushed aluminum heat-sink on top of the viper-esque detailing. This is a slim looking memory kit and will definitely look great on any build due to its neutral color scheme.

With a height of around 44mm, the Patriot Viper Steel RAM is compatible enough with most tower coolers and certain down draft coolers. Still, I would suggest a smaller memory kit if youre going to build an SFF system for better compatibility.

Each Patriot Viper Steel stick features a single rank module with SK Hynix chips embedded on a rather thick layer of matte-black PCB. The necessary information about each modules are located on a sticker.

Each memory module also comes with a serrated plastic bar that runs across the top of the RAM. Its no RGB light bar but it is enough to provide a good contrast over the rest of the kit.

This past year if you were looking for a high performance DDR4 memory kit you basically had to pick an RGB kit. This necessarily is not a bad thing as we think adding RGB to a build is a great thing, but if you didnt want RGB you ended up spending an arm and a leg for RGB when you didnt even want it. When looking at DDR4 kits that did not have RGB lighting you basically had to choose lower-end offerings. Well, Patriot wants to change that with their Viper Steel Series. These memory kits have no RGB at all and are available in frequencies all the way up to 4400 MHz! Today we are checking out the PVS416G440C9K kit, which is a 16GB kit running at 4400 MHz with timings of 19-19-39 at 1.45V. The Viper Steel memory comes in a small, flat box. The package is well described so we know what we can find inside and who to ask for help in case of any problems. As in most memory products, there is no users manual as its so easy to install that everyone who is building a PC can handle that. On the other hand, every motherboard manual has info on how to install memory and the proper slots to use. However, we are on Overclockers.com so we assume anyone who is reading this review knows how to install memory.

The memory modules are using a black PCB and protected by gunmetal colored aluminum heatsinks. There are black elements which nicely fill the whole design. Even though there are no LEDs, memory looks exceptional and should fit in with most gaming PC themes. This is actually written on the product page of the Viper Steel memory series and we agree.

The Viper Steel 4400mhz Kit Is Affordable Outperforms Faster Kits Of Ddr4 And While It Lacks Any Kind Of Leds It Still Keeps Its Aesthetics

The Patriot Viper Series has been around for quite some time, and while many may not even think of Patriot when choosing a new set of RAM, in our past experience, they have been a sleeper in the market. What we mean by this, is that while many were buying Corsair, G.Skill, or HyperX sticks, Patriot has been around all that time as well, and if you were willing to do a bit of homework, you would find kits offered by Patriot that would outperform the others mentioned, and most times had a bit left in the tank to overclock them and gain free performance on top of what was offered out of the box. Patriot has been keeping us busy, and with this, the seventh kit of DDR4 to be sent our way, we feel it could be the perfect blend of all things to make even the most discerning enthusiast ponder long and hard about putting these sticks in their next build.

Packaging for the Viper Steel DDR4 has the Viper name and logo at the top-left corner, as well as many Viper logos in the background, behind the pair of memory modules shown in the center. In the top-right corner is where you see the density and speed of the kit, and at the bottom is the full name of the Viper Steel DDR4 Extreme Performance Memory.

With the speed and timings being what they are, we knew right away that we were dealing with B-die memory, and removing the heat spreader proved us right. The ICs used are indeed Samsung K4A8G085WB BCPB.

Comparison Parts And Test Configuration

We wanted to bring you a complete collection of comparison modules specced above DDR4-4000, but the two DDR4-4600 kits are scarcely available and still holding last-years prices. That leaves the Super Luce RGB Sync as the only cost-competitive alternative to the Viper Steel, but well still get to see how the higher-rated DDR4-4600 compares in our performance metrics. Since our four-DIMM motherboard didnt support the full rating of these modules, the dual-DIMM Asus Maximus XI Gene steps in to host our Core i9-9900K at the same fixed 4.80GHz frequency as prior reviews. A GTX 1080 from MSI continues to complement our 256GB OCZ RD400 SSD to minimize other bottlenecks.
