There was even speculation that Sasse might mount an independent challenge to Trump. In an appearance on CNNs State of the Union a year ago this month, he told host Jake Tapper that he thought about leaving the GOP every morning and said that he thought of himself as an independent conservative who caucuses with the Republicans.
When Trump lashed out at the Department of Justice in September of 2018 for indicting two Republican congressmen, Chris Collins of New York and Duncan Hunter of California, Sasse delivered a stinging rebuke: The United States is not some banana republic with a two-tiered system of justice one for the majority party and one for the minority party, Sasse said. These two men have been charged with crimes because of evidence, not because of who the president was when the investigations began.
One Problem For Sasse Is That A Lot Of Republicans Still Love Trump
Sasses concerns are not unique among Republican elites. Among many top donors, strategists and lawmakers, Trumps self-serving orientation is increasingly being seen as a liability for the partys political and policy agendas going forward.
This is especially true when it comes to future electoral prospects. Republican officials and donors blame Trump for the GOPs twin losses in the Senate runoffs in Georgia after Trump publicly fumed about the states Republican leadership for months while continually casting doubt on the legitimacy of the states electoral systems.
And a number of large corporations announced that they were suspending donations to Republicans who voted against the certification of President-elect Joe Bidens election win, which, if sustained, could hurt their ability to compete with Democrats in the next election cycle.
And of late, Trump has taken a somewhat adversarial stance against certain segments of his party, threatening to back the primary opponents of lawmakers he does not like. Establishment Republicans are worried that a Trump-fueled split in the party could damage their prospects as they prepare for midterm elections.
The poll also found Republicans split on Trumps value as a leader for the party after he leaves the White House. Sixty percent of Republicans say party leaders should follow Trumps lead in the future, while 33 percent say they should move away from Trump.

Sen Hawley To Challenge Biden Electors
Sasse, a frequent critic of Trump, said that in private, few Republicans actually believe the president’s baseless claims of voter fraud.
“When we talk in private, I havent heard a single congressional Republican allege that the election results were fraudulent not one. Instead, I hear them talk about their worries about how they will ‘look’ to President Trumps most ardent supporters,” Sasse wrote.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., had privately urged Republican senators not to challenge the Electoral College vote because it could put some vulnerable Republicans at odds with fervent Trump supporters.
Any objections to the Electoral College vote by Republican senators are unlikely to go anywhere, as a majority in each chamber has to vote to agree to the objection in order for a state’s presidential vote to be thrown out.

Sasse Responds To Resolution In Nebraska Gop To Censure Him
LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse is responding to critics within the Nebraska GOP who are making plans to vote to censure him at the Nebraska Republican Partys State Central Committee meeting in Columbus on February 13th.
Sasse has been one of a handful of Republican lawmakers willing to criticize former President Donald Trump, and especially Trumps role in the January 6th storming of the U.S. Capitol by a mob of Trump supporters.
A Resolution of Censure against Sasse has been drafted by the head of the Hitchcock County Republican Party. The resolution, obtained by News Channel Nebraska, is focused on Sasses criticisms of Donald Trump.
In a video statement , Sasse again decried Trumps role in inciting the mob that attacked the Capitol and said he has been keeping his promise to put the Constitution ahead of party politics.

Acting like politics is a religion, it isnt conservative, Sasse said. You are welcome to censure me again, but lets be clear about why this is happening. Ben Sasse is about to be censured by the Nebraska GOP for his antagonistic stance toward Donald Trump again. But he doesn’t care.
As Sasse’s fellow Republican critics of Trump fret over blowback from a base that demands loyalty to the ex-president, the senator isn’t even trying to dissuade those seeking to punish him. Sasse conceded in an interview: I assume I’m going to be censured on Saturday, but I haven’t spent any time to talk anybody out of it.
I care about a lot of the people, but I don’t really care about the censure, he said ahead of the expected condemnation from his states Republican Party. There are a lot of really good people involved in party activism. But I don’t think they’re at all representative of regular Nebraskans Nebraska is a lot Trumpier than I am. But I got a lot more votes than he did.
Sasse just won a race down-ballot from Trump and is as relaxed as one can be about his political situation. He’s facing no internal pressure in the Senate for his vote to convict Trump of incitement of insurrection. A previous censure in 2016 did not rattle his views. If there’s a model for how to successfully build a conservative GOP out of Trump’s shadow, it might as well be him.
Even the most pro-Trump senators want Sasse at the GOP table instead of in the wilderness.

Sen Ben Sasse Rebuked By Nebraskas Republican Committee
OMAHA, Neb. Nebraska Republicans reprimanded U.S. Sen. Ben Sasse for his work in Washington, D.C., but stopped short of censuring him Saturday for his outspoken criticism of former President Donald Trump.
Sasse was one of just seven Republicans who voted last month to convict Trump at his impeachment trial, and he has been openly critical of Trump, drawing criticism from some Nebraska Republicans who wanted him to be loyal to party candidates.
The Omaha World-Herald reported the state GOPs Central Committee approved a resolution Saturday that expresses deep disappointment and sadness about Sasses approach to the job he was just reelected to in November and urges him to represent the people of Nebraska to Washington and not Washington to the people of Nebraska.
The committee had censured Sasse once before, in March 2016, after he leveled other criticism against then-candidate Trump.
Sasse dismissed the resolution in a statement after the vote.
There are lots of good people involved in party activism, and I care about them. But most Nebraskans dont think politics should be about the weird worship of one dude, Sasse said.
Several other U.S. senators have also faced criticism from rank-and-file Republicans after last months impeachment vote. North Carolina Sen. Richard Burr, Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy and Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey have all been rebuked by their respective state parties.
