Yes This Is Really Happening: Trumps Poll Numbers Are Going Up
In the fantastic sci-fi action film The Matrix, one of the key scenes involves Morpheus, a mysterious mentor figure, showing a young man named Neo what the Matrix really is.
Rumors abound regarding this mysterious and important Matrix, and Neo has been obsessively trying to discover the secret for some time. Now, having accepted the red pill from Morpheus and the two of them having gone into a sleep state to enter a computer simulation mimicking reality, he is ready to learn the true nature of the Matrix at last!
What Neo is then shown by Morpheus is so horrifying that his mind cannot take it. To be brief, what Neo is shocked to learn, is that much of the human race lives in a fake computer simulated world as their bodies have been turned into batteries to run the machines holding them captive.
Neo violently rejects what Morpheus has shown him, demanding to be let out of the computer simulation and back into the real world, where he quickly vomits and passes out.
Right now, as the leaders of the Democratic Party and the DNC Media Complex stare in disbelieving horror at President Donald J. Trumps rising poll numbers, they are coming to understand what Neo felt in that terrifying moment he was confronted with the awful truth.
Yes, as incredible as this news might seem to some people, Trumps approval rating is ticking upwards in the month of May.
I suspect theyre telling themselves the same things repeatedly.
But it is real. And it is happening.
Trumps Favorability Rating Drops To New Low: Poll
Former President Trumps favorability rating has dropped to a new low after slowly trickling down over the past few months.
A new NBC News poll released Sunday found that 34 percent of registered voters said they have a positive view of Trump, while 54 percent say they have a negative view of him. Trumps favorability rating was at its lowest in April 2021, when his rating fell to 32 percent in the same NBC poll.
The former presidents favorability score is down slightly since last month, with the same 54 percent saying they have a negative view of Trump, but 36 percent saying they had a positive view of him.
While Trumps favorability score has trickled down, President Bidens score has gone up, though only slightly. This month, 45 percent said they approve of the president a 2-point increase since last month.
Contrarily, 52 percent of voters say they disapprove of Biden, which has gone down 3 percentage points since last month.
Pollsters also questioned voters about their views on the different investigations against Trump, specifically asking whether the various investigations should stop or continue. The poll found that 56 percent of voters believe the investigations should continue, while 41 percent say they should stop.
The NBC News poll surveyed 1,000 registered voters between Sept. 9-13, and has a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points.

But there are lingering questions about the presidents approach. Over the last several weeks, Trump has been inconsistent. He first downplayed the threat of the coronavirus, then appeared to take it much more seriously last week, and then said the White House cant let the cure of public health measures be worse than economic harm and suggestedopening up the country by Easter.
Trump has faced criticism for the United States being slow to test for the virus, and for not using his full authority to distribute needed supplies. The U.S. now has the most confirmed cases in the world, and more than 1,000 Americans have died, according to Johns Hopkins University researchers.
Its possible current polling is a lagging indicator from Trump publicly taking the virus more seriously than he had been previously. Surveys so far largely arent reflecting Trumps pivot this week to suggesting he wants to reopen the economy within weeks.
Regardless, the 3-point increase in his approval rating so far is not much of a bump, certainly not the kind of increase other presidents have seen in other rally-around-the-flag moments, pollsters say.

Polling Average Put Biden’s Approval Rating Higher Than 39%
Experts say approval ratings should be calculated by looking at an average between polls not a single poll. On the day the claim was made, the polling average for Biden’s approval rating was 45.2%.
“The best practice to look at multiple polls and not to fixate on an individual poll, which can be cherry-picked to make inaccurate arguments,” Barry Burden, director of the Elections Research Center and professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, said in an email.
The website FiveThirtyEight rates how different polls vary in terms of accuracy and statistical bias. It calculates approval ratings for presidents based on a weighted average that takes into account poll quality and uncertainty.
According to that polling average, Biden’s approval rate was 45.2% on the day the claim was posted.
The Facebook post appeared to refer to an Economist/YouGov poll conducted Sept. 4-7. It reported 39% of American adults approved of Biden. YouGov noted this was the first time the majority of Americans disapproved of Biden during his presidency.
However, Burden told USA TODAY this poll was “unusually low.”

“In the last month YouGov has also reported approval ratings of 44% and 50%,” he said. “Taken as a group it is more accurate to say that Biden’s rating is hovering in the mid-40s.”
Why Trumps Approval Rating Has Gone Up
More Americans have died from coronavirus than in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Thousands more are so sick they are in hospitals, which could soon be overwhelmed. The stock market is way down. Millions filed for unemployment in the past few weeks. American life from schools to workplaces to vacations to churches are all on pause.

Approval ratings of his presidency have never been higher. In the last week, Trumps approval rating has been around 49 percent in various polls. Gallups most recent weekly poll showed Trump at 49 percent approval and 45 percent disapproval. This was only the second time in his presidency where his approval number was better than his disapproval number.
The same poll found that 60 percent approved of Trumps handling of the coronavirus outbreak. The number was up from earlier, when the administration was criticized for being flat-footed in its response.
There are three things going on here.
1. The rally-behind-the-flag effect
Scholars of American history note that in wartime or other challenging moments, Americans typically rally behind the president. It happened for Franklin D. Roosevelt after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, George H.W. Bush during the Gulf War, and his son, George W. Bush, saw his approval ratings spike the largest amount in American polling history after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Unpopular Presidents Cost Their Parties In Midterms
Bidens diminishing standing should be alarming to Democrats working to hold control of Congress in the midterm elections this fall. While Bidens decline has not yet dragged down approval for most Democratic incumbents on the Senate side of the aisle, studies have shown an increasing association between a partys House performance and their presidents job approval rating.
When it comes to this president, specifically, surveys at this point have found that an aversion to Biden doesnt necessarily mean a vote against the Democratic Party come November, though that likely provides little solace given the bleak nature of the political environment.
How Do Americans View Bidens Handling Of The Pandemic And The Economy
Most Americans think Biden is handling the coronavirus pandemic far better than Trump. Sixty-two percent approve of how Biden has managed the U.S. response so far. Another 30 percent say they disapprove.

The publics approval of Bidens actions far exceeds that earned by Trumps leadership during the pandemic. His highest approval rating was 18 points lower, at 44 percent in March 2020, the same month the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 to be a pandemic and Trump labeled it a public health emergency. From there, his approval on handling the pandemic dropped as low as 37 percent, recovering slightly to 39 percent by the time he left office in January.
But Americans have less faith in Bidens ability to heal the nations wounded economy compared to Trump. While 46 percent of U.S. adults approve of how Biden has managed the economy, another 41 percent do not approve. During Trumps last days in office, half of Americans said they approved of the former presidents handling of the economy, a sentiment thatTrump leveraged throughout his presidency and in his 2020 campaign for a second term.
Keanu Adams, 25, of Vacaville, California, said he voted for Biden and hopes the president recognizes the country needs more than public health and economic fixes right now.
The nation needs to uproot systemic problems to address what is really wrong, Adams said.

Bidens Job Rating Is Similar To Trumps But Lower Than That Of Other Recent Presidents
Nearly two years into his presidency, Joe Bidens job rating stands at 38% identical to Donald Trumps approval rating at a similar point in his presidency, but lower than those of some other recent presidents in the run-up to their first midterm election.
The trajectory of presidential job approval differs for each White House occupant. Biden began his presidency with majority approval: In March 2021, 54% of Americans approved of Bidens job performance, and his rating rose to 59% a month later. But his popularity declined sharply last summer and has been in the low 40s or high 30s since then.
By contrast, Trumps job rating remained remarkably stable during his first two years in office and well after that. In fact, until his job approval fell dramatically following the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, roughly four-in-ten Americans consistently approved of Trumps job performance. In October 2018, close to two years after Trump was elected, 38% approved of how he was handling his job as president.
Bidens job rating is fairly comparable to Ronald Reagans and Bill Clintons at this stage of their presidencies, but lower than Barack Obamas . Those three presidents like Biden lost ground over their first two years in office.
Partisan divides in views of the president have grown in recent years
Trump Leaves On A Personal Low Note
The 34% job approval rating for Trump in Gallups Jan. 4-15 poll is one point lower than his prior lowest single rating, registered on several occasions in late 2017. The first of these came in August 2017, as Trump was facing intense criticism over his unvarnished threats against North Korean aggression and his response to deadly violence by a white nationalist at a protest in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Between October and December of that year, his approval fell to 35% on three separate occasions as Justice Department officials charged several of Trumps 2016 campaign figures with crimes in the Russia investigation, including former Trump National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, who pleaded guilty to lying to officials in the investigation in December 2017.
His support fell below 40% in two June 2020 polls amid racial justice protests in response to the death of George Floyd at the hands of police and growing displeasure with his handling of the pandemic. By the time of the 2020 election in which he sought a second term, his support had recovered somewhat, and 46% approved of the job Trump was doing.
Trump is the only president not to register a 50% job approval rating at any point in his presidency since Gallup began measuring presidential job approval in 1938. Likewise, he is the only president who did not have a honeymoon period of above-average ratings upon taking office. His initial 45% job approval rating proved to be his high point for his first year as president.

Two Different Paths To 41%
President Biden and former president Trump dont have a lot in common. But, they share the inauspicious distinction of having the lowest approval ratings in modern history for a president 500 days into his first term. The fivethirtyeight.com tracker has Bidens net approval rating at a dismal -13.3, two points lower than Trumps -11 in June of 2018.
But, the paths they took to these dismal ratings are very different.
Trump began his presidency with little support from independents and some skepticism among his own base. By the 2018 midterm election, Trump had consolidated his base, but remained deeply unpopular with independent voters. Meanwhile, Biden started his tenure with strong support from his partisans and decent approval ratings among independent voters. But, Biden lost altitude with both in the late summer/early fall of last year and has yet to regain that support.
The question now is whether the different routes their subpar approval ratings can tell us anything about the likely outcome of the November midterm.
However, opinions of Trump among independents started low and remained low throughout Trumps first two years in office. Gallup polling from the spring of 2017 found Trumps job approval ratings among independents at an anemic 36 percent. By the summer of 2018 they stayed in that same range . By October, just 38 percent of independents approved of the job Trump was doing in office.
Roughly Half Of Americans Approve Of What Biden Has Done So Far
About half of Americans 49 percent said they approve of how Biden has served as president so far, less than two months into his presidency, according to the latest poll. But as was the case with his predecessor, whose last year in office was marred by the pandemic, much of that support comes from people who identify as members of his own party. Among Democrats, Bidens approval rating was 87 percent. But only 11 percent of Republicans and43 percent of independents said they approved of the president.

Another 42 percent of Americans disapprove of what Biden has done so far as president, including 81 percent of Republicans and 43 percent of independents.
Still, Biden currently has a higher job approval rating than former President Donald Trump ever reached during his four years in the White House, according to Marist polling data. And support for Biden seems to be growing. In this latest poll, 52 percent of Americans said they had a favorable impression of him. Thats up from 41 percent in October 2019 in the midst of Trumps first impeachment. Since then, Biden has inched up in favorability.
Republicans in Congress face steeper job disapproval, with 64 percent of Americans saying they do not like what they are seeing, an increase of 6 percentage points over January 2019, including 38 percent of Republicans and 85 percent of Democrats.

Donald Trump Has Become More Popular Since The January 6 Capitol Attack
Former President Donald Trump still manages to dominate the political headlines, nearly a year and half after leaving office. On Thursday, the House select committee investigating the January 6 attack on the US Capitol used its first prime-time hearing to make the case that Trump used his power to try and overturn the 2020 election result.
The committee faces political headwinds, however. A majority of Americans now believe that Trump was either not or only partially responsible for the rioters who overtook the Capitol, according to a recent NBC News poll. Thats up from 47% in January 2021.
