The NY Giants, led by quarterback Daniel Jones, wide receiver Sterling Shepard, and cornerback James Bradberry host quarterback Mack Jones and the New England Patriots in an NFL Week 3 preseason game on Sunday, August 29 at 6 p.m. at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

It’s Like It’s 2007 All Over Again

Invoking the 2007 NFL season is going to be a major theme of the media coverage headed into this year’s Super Bowl, especially when concerning any discussion of the New York Giants.

Just as in 2007, the Giants opened the year 6-2 and then faltered in the last half of the season. In 2007, they were a wild-card team, coming in second to the NFC East-leading Dallas Cowboys. This year, they won the division as a 9-7 team by defeating the Cowboys in Week 17.

In 2007, they closed their season by losing to the New England Patriots 38-35, avenging it by defeating the then-unbeaten team in the Super Bowl.

This season in Week 13, they fell to the Green Bay Packers, Super Bowl favorites and defending champions, 38-35, and then got their comeuppance by beating them in the divisional round of the playoffs.

And in 2007, they made it to the Super Bowl by defeating the Packers in overtime by kicking a field goal, the same outcome in this year’s NFC championship win over the San Francisco 49ers.

The only difference this year is how they managed to be such a good team. The first time around, they did so on the strength of their defense and running game, with quarterback Eli Manning looking overwhelmed in many games and playing the role of game manager rather than offensive leader.

This season, the Giants are Manning’s team, and his passing abilityin concert with a talented trio of receiversis what has gotten them to the Super Bowl.

Historic Patriots Vs Giants Game

Super Bowl XLII: Ruining the Perfect Season: The Patriots were the clear favorites ahead of Super Bowl XLII after the 2007 season. New England did not lose a game in the regular season or playoffs leading up to the Super Bowl. With a win, the Patriots would have earned just the second perfect season in NFL history . The Giants had a 10-6 record in the regular season and made the playoffs as a wild card team. The Patriots led late in the fourth quarter after a touchdown pass from Tom Brady to Randy Moss. The TD put the Patriots up by four. The Giants next drive became one of the most famous in the history of the Super Bowl. On a play that looked like it would end in a sack, Eli Manning scrambled and lobbed a pass down the field. Giants receiver David Tyree made what is known now as the Helmet Catch. He made a leaping grab for the football and brought it down against his helmet for the catch. The play set up a game winning touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress. The Giants win is one of the biggest upsets in all of pro sports.

The Giants are coming off back-to-back preseason losses, and while it doesnt hurt their chances for the season, New York will surely be looking to close out the exhibition period with a win over the Patriots to boost fan and team confidence. The Giants lost 17-13 to Cleveland last weekend, resting most of their starters and letting the reserve squad get some time on the field.

The Patriots have won both preseason outings, including a crushing 35-0 win over the Eagles last week.

To end the first half, Lorenzo Carter sacks Mac Jones who struggled to get anything going on offense, with no thanks to some penalties and drops from his receivers.

Daniel Jones gets time to put the ball up and on target to tight end Caden Smith for a TD, and the Giants are on the board and in the lead with 25 seconds remaining in the first half.

The Giants are trying to get into field-goal range with less than a minute remaining in the first half, but how about this chip block from J.J. Taylor to set up a checkdown reception.

Zack Cox

The Giants have an opportunity to drive for a score with just 2 minutes remaining in the first half.

Patriots forced to punt after Jones pass deflected in front of Olszewski. Jones showed off some nice subtle footwork in the pocket to create some space, but the ball didnt reach its target.

Jones continues to look promising, but as of now, there is nothing apparent that says he should be the starting quarterback.

A drop by Gunner Olszewski highlights the reason he should exclusively be a special teams guy. It appears USA Todays Henry McKenna agrees.

Gunner Olszewski just can’t seem to make an impact on offense. Hasn’t quite put it together as a receiver. He’ll still make the team as a punt returner and core special teams player. But he’s just not QUITE there yet when he’s on the field for the offense.

Henry McKenna

Jones and the offense will take over at the 20-yard line.

SOLID PRESEASONThe Patriots finished the 2009 preseason with a 3-1 record – their best preseason mark since 2004, when they finished 4-0. New England also finished the preseason with a 3-1 mark in 2001 and 2002.

PUTTING UP POINTS The Patriots scored 38 points against the Giants, rallying to a 38-27 win following deficits of 21-0 in the first quarter and 27-24 in the fourth quarter. New England’s 38-point outburst tied the fifth-highest preseason point total in the team’s 223-game preseason history dating back to 1960. In those 223 games, the Patriots have only score more than tonight’s 38 points on four occasions – Aug. 26, 2006 , Sept. 4, 1982 , Sept. 4, 1977 and Aug. 5, 1960 .

GREEN-ELLIS SHINESBenJarvus Green-Ellis finished the 2009 preseason with a team-high three touchdowns and also paced the club with 249 rushing yards on 49 carries . Against the Giants, Green-Ellis piled up 125 yards on 29 attempts and scored three rushing touchdowns, including two in the fourth quarter to help the Patriots rally for the win. The 2008 Pro Bowler made a 46-yard field goal in the third quarter to tie the game, 24-24. He has now connected on 13 straight preseason field goal attempts, dating back to the 2007 preseason finale.

Case Keenum and KhaDarel Hodge spend a lot of time practicing together and have developed chemistry.

They put it to use Sunday.

Keenum showed why Cleveland invested in him to back up Baker Mayfield, throwing a 7-yard touchdown pass to Hodge while leading the Browns to a 17-13 win over the New York Giants in an exhibition game.

Keenum connected with Hodge to end Clevelands opening possession. The veteran QB finished 9 of 12 for 74 yards with an interception while playing most of the first half.

Case makes things a lot easier, said Hodge, a special teams standout who is trying to earn a roster spot among Clevelands talented receivers. He can talk about coverages. He can talk about how to set up a route or what you do in certain coverage or how to run a certain route in certain coverages and hes a great guy.

He just brings a lot to the game.

The Browns rested Mayfield, running back Nick Chubb, All-Pro defensive end Myles Garrett and most of their starters for the second straight week.

10:50 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN, Patriots. Our second fumble recovered for a touchdown of the night. Running back Jon Hilliman coughs it up on a doomed third-down screen, and Kyle Van Noy runs it back 22 yards for a score. Jones tried to stop him just short of the goal line but couldn’t. Giants Vs Patriots: 3 Storylines The Media Will Hammer Us Over The Head With

With two weeks’ worth of time to fill between the conference championship games and the Super Bowl, there’s going to be a lot of talk about the same topics when it comes to the big game.

It doesn’t hurt that this year’s Super Bowl is a rematch of the 2008 game between the New York Giants and New England Patriots.

Considering both teams come from major media markets, there’s little chance that the NFL media is going to shy away from battering us all over the heads with the same Super Bowl-related topics day in and day out.

Here are three Super Bowl storylines that are apt to be discussed ad infinitum over the course of the coming days.

Patriots Vs Giants: Full New England Game Preview

Including this Sunday’s game, the New England Patriots will have entered three of the past five against the New York Giants with an undefeated record. Of course, Pats fans won’t want to relive most contests against Big Blue from the past eight years, as this week’s game is an opportunity to earn a small measure of redemption against one of the thorniest nemeses of the Tom Brady-Bill Belichick era.

With the reliability of the presidential election cycle, the Giants are again the lead dogs to win the flawed NFC East. Currently sitting at 5-4 with a half-game lead over the Philadelphia Eagles, New York has been a highly volatile team from week to week. On a weekly basis, the Giants seem to alternate between shootouts and defensive slugfests, between looking like serious contenders and postseason pretenders, often within the same game.

Nonetheless, New York presents some very real matchup issues, especially for a Patriots squad that has become increasingly shorthanded in its post-bye stretch. With Dion Lewis now down and the offensive line losing members faster than an Agatha Christie novel, the depth New England prides itself on possessing is being stretched further than anyone would like at this stage of the season.

Traveling to MetLife Stadium should be one of the Patriots’ biggest tests of their final eight games. Read on for analysis of the key matchups and game factors surrounding New England’s Week 10 contest.

Patriots 22 Vs Giants 20 Final Score

OK, now, the Patriots finish this preseason perfect.

New England Patriots

Hold that thought.

Damien Willis beats newcomer Shaun Wade for a late and embarrassing TD to make it 22-20. The 2-point conversion is no good.

Patriots go for a late 53-yard field goal with Quinn Nordin who hooks it way left. That guarantees hell wind up released or on the practice squad at best. Giants try to get on the board with 30 seconds remaining, but it isnt to be as New England finishes the preseason a perfect 3-0.

Patriots 19 Vs Giants 7 3rd Quarter

Giants vs. Patriots | NFL Preseason Week 4 Game Highlights

Mac Jones takes a coverage sack with no one open down the field which leads to a punt. Jones day might be over, and we could see Brian Hoyer in the fourth quarter unless the Patriots get another position.

Jones takes some criticism for perhaps holding on to the ball for too long. There is some validity in this statement:

Jones gets sacked twice on that drive. You’d like to see the rookie get rid of the ball quicker there.

Mark Daniels

Mac Jones takes a bad sack as he missed a wide-open Isaiah Zuber to his left, which sets up a tough third down, and a penalty will make the conversion even tougher.

Patriots cornerback Dee Virgin has not looked good. Hes been beat on double moves by the Giants second and third-string receivers, and has also gotten lucky with New York wide outs dropping passes.

Patriots defense holds the Giants to a field-goal attempt, but Graham Gano cannot convert and New England stays in control with the score at 19-7.

Rhamondre Stevenson is a MONSTER. He powers his way through several defenders for a 9-yard, GROWN-MAN TD.

Rhamondre Stevenson will not be denied. Hes now got 5 rushing touchdowns this preseason.

Pats Buzz

Patriots leading 19-7 after Quinn Nordin makes the extra point.

Thats a beautiful back-shoulder throw from Jones to Devin Asiasi while under pressure from the Giants defense. Patriots have it first and goal.

It might be a long year for the G-Men. Patriots take over after yet another drop from the Giants receivers.
