What Happens If You Tow Over Capacity

We’ve pointed out that following the towing capacity is critical for your safety and the safety of others on the road. Exceeding the towing capacity makes turning much more difficult and can result in dumping your trailer or having it snap free of its hitch. Your vehicle’s brakes can only handle so much, also. If you are pulling too much weight, the braking system can potentially fail.

Earlier, we outlined a few things that can happen to the vehicle itself if you overload your trailer. Aside from damage to the engine and transmission that we mentioned, your vehicle’s tires, suspension system, and axles can be damaged or destroyed by too much weight.

Never take any chances when it comes to towing or hauling with a vehicle. Always be fully aware of the weight on board, the weight of the trailer you have attached, and your trailer cargo weight.

What Is The Jeep Patriot Towing Capacity

CURT Class 3 Trailer Hitch & Wiring for 2011

The Jeep Patriot was only in production between the years 2007 and 2017 but these mid-size SUVs are still popular today. There may not be any new models, but the Jeep Patriots sold between 2007 and 2017 were a popular choice amongst drivers.

Sometimes drivers need to tow extra cargo or campers, boats or other braked and unbraked trailers. To keep your Jeep Patriot free from damage and to ensure the safety of other road users as well as yourself, you must never tow more than your vehicles towing capacity.

In this article, we share what the towing capacity of all the Jeep Patriot models is, why towing capacity is important and how a tow package can help the Jeep Patriot to tow heavier loads.

The Jeep Patriot was first released in 2007 and after 11 years of production, it was discontinued in 2017 and the last models were sold that year.

Between 2007 and 2017 the towing capacity for the Jeep Patriot stayed exactly the same, you can tow trailers with a braking system installed that weigh no more than 1000 pounds.

However, certain Jeep Patriot models can have their towing capacity increased to 2000 pounds, as long as a towing package is installed.

If you plan to attach a trailer to any vehicle, being fully aware of the towing capacity is a must. The manufacturer’s guidelines on towing should always be strictly adhered to so that your vehicle remains safe while in motion. There isn’t a uniform number for towing capacity, as this amount varies from model to model and can even be different within a model’s trim levels. Supposing you own a Jeep Patriot, what would the maximum amount be that it could safely tow? We researched this popular SUV to provide all the answers you need in this post.

The Jeep Patriot’s latest year model, 2017, has a towing capacity of 1,000 pounds. However, with the addition of the towing package, the 2017 Jeep Patriot is capable of towing up to 2,000 pounds.

Now that we know the maximum towing capacity of a Jeep Patriot, you might have some other questions about this SUV. How is towing capacity determined? Is there any way to safely increase a vehicle’s towing capacity? What happens if I tow beyond the capacity that the manufacturer recommends? To see what we’ve discovered, read ahead in this post.

How Does A Tow Package Work

A complete heavy duty tow package will usually include things like an auxiliary transmission cooler and heavy duty rear shocks or springs. They may also include brake upgrades, usually in the form of larger drums or brakes. Sometimes, a dealer may even include an extra spare tire with a factory tow package, as well.

The Jeep Patriot Towing Capacity

If you want to tow a travel or cargo trailer, a boat, or a tent trailer with your Jeep Patriot, it is important that it does not weigh more than the maximum towing capacity. To give you a better idea of how much different trailers weigh, lets take a look at some examples:

  • Tent trailers weigh approximately 1000 to 1500 pounds.
  • A fishing boat and trailer weigh between 900 to 6000 pounds.
  • An average size travel trailer weighs approximately 5200 pounds when empty .
  • Fifth wheel travel trailers can weigh as much as 12000 15000 lbs.
  • A single axle 6×12 enclosed trailer weighs approximately 1,200 pounds when empty.
  • An empty 13-foot Meerkat camper weighs only 900 pounds.

You must always take into consideration the weight of your trailer when it is loaded before towing it. A 900-pound trailer can weigh much more once it is loaded up with all of your luggage and camping gear.

Tow packages can make it possible for vehicles to tow heavier loads than their standard towing capacity, but we will go into this in more detail later.

There are three separate weights that drivers should be aware of when they are intending to tow using their vehicle.

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating

The GVWR is the maximum weight a vehicle is rated to carry. This weight is the total of the chassis, fluids, engine, cargo, and load everything inside the car.

The GVWR is a set figure and exceeding it may negatively impact your cars performance and cause expensive damage to the brakes, transmission, and suspension. The GVWR can be found inside the drivers door panel or in the vehicle owners manual.

Trailer Tow Wiring Harness

Installing a tow wiring harness doesnt increase a vehicles towing capacity but it does make towing a trailer much safer. Using a trailer tow wiring-harness will enable the turning signals and brake lights on the trailer and your Jeep to ignite at the same time.

Having your Jeep and trailer lights work in tandem will allow other road users to see exactly where you are going and when you are stopping. If your trailer is not equipped with this wiring harness, drivers behind you may not know that they need to stop in plenty of time.

Can A Jeep Patriot Pull A Caravan

A Jeep Patriot can only pull weights up to 1000 pounds, 2000 if you are using the tow package or driving a 2017 model. Most camper trailers will weigh more than this and it is also advised that you do not exceed 75 85% of your vehicles towing capacity.

Depending on its weight, you may be able to tow a small camper with a very small amount of camping gear inside. However, the Patriot is not suitable for towing large, full-size travel trailers you will be safest towing a pop-up tent trailer.

How Do You Increase Towing Capacity

Draw

Should you need to tow an object that would put you above the manufacturer’s recommended towing capacity, there are a few modifications you can make to your vehicle to increase this number safely.

Equipping your Jeep Patriot with more durable shocks will help. Even more important than the shocks are the axles. Axles have weight limits also, and if they are tested beyond the maximum, they can warp or snap. Installing more heavy-duty, weight-rated axles will prevent this from happening.

As we noted earlier in this post, keeping the engine cool when it’s working extra hard is the key to avoiding long-term damage to your drive train. While the engine oil cooler will help with this, it will only do so much. Some model vehicles will allow you also to upgrade your radiator to a bigger size. The bigger the radiator, the more it will cool your engine.

Having these upgrades installed will increase the towing capacity by up to 25 percent. However, you should always have this work double-checked by a trusted licensed mechanic before loading your trailer. It’s also very important to note these upgrades will not increase the payload of your trailer.

How Much Of Your Towing Capacity Can You Use

The Jeep Patriot has a towing capacity of 1000 pounds , however, drivers should avoid towing this much if possible. The towing capacity includes the weight of the trailer and any cargo loaded into the trailer.

You may be using a small trailer that only weighs 700 pounds, for example, but if you pile in a heavy load of cargo, you may find yourself dangerously close to your vehicles towing capacity.

It is recommended that drivers do not use more than 85% of their maximum towing capacity if possible. If you get too close to the maximum towing capacity, you can put a strain on your vehicles brakes, tires and suspension and increase your risk of being involved in an accident on the road.

Is It Safe To Tow At Max Weight

Towing at maximum weight is safe, so long as you adhere to all of the manufacturer’s recommendations. As we mentioned earlier, paying attention to the gross combined weight rating is critical when towing. If you have a full cab of passengers and a bunch of cargo in the rear of your Jeep Patriot, this means that you will be able to tow less than the towing capacity. Be aware of the weight on board your vehicle, which will affect the safe amount of weight you can tow.

The wires in the harness are a heavier gauge than other harnesses I’ve seen, which is good for trailers with many lights – the more lights, the heavier gauge you need. The harness was plenty long, connectors fit well, and the instructions were straight-forward enough. I had the rear bumper off to install the hitch, so installation was particularly easy for me! I was kind of bummed when I realized I had to run a wire to the battery, but that is what it takes to have an active wiring system that shuts down if there is an electrical problem instead of a meltdown. Vehicle tail lights and brake lights still work if the fuse blows.

Haven’t used it yet, but I’m sure it will be fine. The hitch receiver seems to be high quality and can’t beat the price! I have one suggestion to anyone that installs this hitch: take off the rear bumper – it’s easy to do and you can find videos on YouTube for directions. After removing the bumper, this was an easy installation for one person. Have the wiring harness ready because it is really easy to install that with the bumper off too. The width of the hitch was about a quarter of an inch shorter than the width of my frame, so I used two large washers as shims so I didn’t stress the hitch brackets tightening the bolts.Read more .

Curt Class 3 Trailer Hitch Receiver

Product is very well built and has worked flawlessly for us. The only change I did was to get longer bolts for the passenger side. This allowed me to use my recovery hook with the tow hitch. If you do this mode you will need to Dremel the holes bigger on the recovery hook to install it. Actual install was straight forward and the install information online at etrailer helped a lot. Don’t be afraid to do the trimming on the lower rear plastic. Just follow the instructions and it is easy. You will need a light kit for the trailer lights to work with the Jeep Compass. Well built tow hitch and has given us no issues when towing.732141

I purchased this just over a year ago and received an email today asking me to review it. Let me start by saying that I love that they waited a year to ask for a review. Whats the point of reviewing a product the day you receive it?The trailer Hitch arrived within a few days of ordering and I watched the videos for installing it on my Jeep Patriot. With there being enough room for me to crawl under the car I had the hitch installed in 30 mins! I also purchased the lighting kit and the entire project was done in an hour. The entire hitch except for the tongue is hidden behind the bumper cover and looks like a factory option. I use this hitch daily for work and its been rock solid and still looks like new. Fit and finish are perfect. Great Product!893528

How To Install The Etrailercom Trailer Hitch On A 2016 Jeep Patriot

Speaker 1: Today, on our 2016 Jeep Patriot, we’re going to be taking a look at, I’m going to show you how to install the eTrailer.com hitch receiver, part number E98836.This is what our hitch looks like when it’s installed. You can see the inaudible 00:00:13 is completely hidden behind the bumper fascia. The only thing we can really see is our receiver tube. With that being said, our receiver tube sits nice and tucked in behind the outer edge of our fascia, so we’re not going to have to worry about hitting our legs or our shins on it when we’re loading or unloading the back of the vehicle. This is going to be a Class III hitch. It’s going to be a two-inch by two-inch. It’s going to have a reinforced collar, give it a little extra stability on the receiver tube.

So, once you pry out the center, pull out the base, too.Next thing we need to do is remove our exhaust. We’re going to have an exhaust hanger on this side we’re going to need to remove, and one on this side. We’re going to take some lubricant and we’re going to spray the hanger. It’s going to make it slide off a little bit easier. If you don’t have any lubricant, soapy water works just as good.If you take a pry bar, or a large screwdriver works just as well, you want to get one of those pins off.
