STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Now that Donald Trump is nearing the end of his term, and former Vice President Joe Biden has been projected as the winner of the 2020 presidential election, can Trump legally run and be elected again in 2024?
He can, and its happened before, said Brian Browne, assistant vice president of government relations at St. Johns University, who points to another prominent New Yorker, Grover Cleveland, who did exactly that back in 1893. Legally, under the 22nd Amendment, theres nothing stopping him from making an attempt.
Cleveland, who served as governor of New York and mayor of Buffalo before being elected president in 1884, served from 1885 to 1889, said Browne, who is also an adjunct professor of political science. Cleveland then lost his re-election bid to Benjamin Harrison, but that didnt stop him from being elected again and serving a second term as president from 1893 to 1897.
After days of counting — and a nation hanging on every update in the vote tally from the battleground states of Pennsylvania, Georgia, Nevada and Arizona — on Saturday a number of media organizations projected that Democratic challenger Joe Biden will win the presidency.
North Carolina, Georgia and Alaska have still yet to be called.

Trumps Fixation On The Past Puts His Political Future In Limbo
But some Trump allies believe he may ultimately opt against a run, either for health reasons or, if Bidens poll numbers rebound, because he doesnt want to risk a second loss, even though he has yet to acknowledge the first defeat.
So far, a slew of prominent Republicans have begun making overt moves to run in 2024. Whether they will abandon their own White House dreams if the former president were to run again is another matter entirely.
Former Vice President Mike Pence, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Sens. Tom Cotton and Ted Cruz are among those who made appearances in early voting states, and some have started securing top political consultants. Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley has hinted shed mount a bid but wouldnt run against Trump if he decides to enter the race. Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson has suggested he may run even if Trump does. And there is Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has emerged as an heir-apparent to Trump and the populist MAGA movement.
Things may be just as uncertain on the Democratic side of the ledger. If Biden opts against seeking reelection, the field may not clear out for Vice President Kamala Harris, who has yet to find her political footing in the role. Two 2020 candidates, Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Cory Booker , each have held recent high-profile events on hot button election topics.
If Biden opts to seek a second term, a serious primary challenge would be unlikely.

I do not think any of this terms Supreme Court rulings will have an adverse effect on Trumps chances or those of the Republicans in 22 or 24, he said.
The abortion decision has the most potential impact but, since state laws remain in force, the impact is largely theoretical and when people see how it works out theyll see that very little has really changed.

Trump Jr posted on Twitter on November 6 saying: “The total lack of action from virtually all of the ‘2024 GOP hopefuls’ is pretty amazing.
He also posted an image of himself in front of a banner with the words “Don Jr 2024” on Instagram just two weeks ago.
He wrote as the caption: “Hahahahaha. Oh boy. This was a sign I saw up at the Fallon Nevada Livestock Auction. This will make the lib heads explode.”
“To whomever made that thanks for the compliment but let’s get through 2020 with a big win first!!!!”
There’s also Ivanka Trump to consider.
Ms Trump now has years of administration experience serving as a White House advisor to her father.
According to the White House, in her role Ivanka: “Focuses on the education and economic empowerment of women and their families as well as job creation and economic growth through workforce development, skills training and entrepreneurship.”
She also served as an unpaid employee in the White House, saying back in 2017 when she was given the role, she had “heard the concerns some have with my advising the President in my personal capacity”.

Trump or any Republican who runs for the White House should travel down inroads the former president made among voters of color, said Jeff Roe, who managed Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s 2021 campaign in Virginia as well as Sen. Ted Cruz’s 2016 presidential campaign.
Hispanics, in particular, are becoming more conservative, said Roe, who now runs the consulting firm Axiom Strategies that represents GOP candidates all around the US.
While most voters of color decisively supported Biden during the 2020 election and fueled his victory, Trump did improve his showingcompared to 2016. In all, 26% of Trump’s support during the last presidential election came from nonwhite voters. A report by the Democratic data firm Catalist found there was about an 8 percentage-point swing toward Trump in 2020 compared to 2016.
“With that growth it’s a real opportunity for Republicans,” Roe said.

In a note to clients this week, Wolfe Research Chief Investment Strategist Chris Senyek said Trump still has a narrow path to reelectionfor example, even if he loses two out of three in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, he can still prevail if he can hold all the other states he won in 2016. If there is a status quo outcome, with Trump in the White House and a split Congress, Senyek expects a continued heavy reliance on executive orders and regulatory changes.

What Is Lichtman’s Prediction For 2024
Prof Lichtman, who details his strategy for predicting the White House winner in his book, Predicting the Next President: The Keys to the White House, said although it is very early, it would strongly be to the Democratic party’s advantage if Mr Biden ran for re-election in 2024.
With the sitting president running again, youre not going to have a big internal party fight, thats a major key, and youre unlikely to have a big third-party movement. It’s also worth noting that Biden will probably achieve major policy changes from the Trump administration, he said.
There are some, however, who see Mr Bidens age, he is 77, as an obstacle to a second term.
Although Mr Biden has not indicated whether or not he plans to run for re-election, there is ample speculation that he might not.
If that is the case, Prof Lichtman says it will be a tougher journey for Democrats.
You lose the incumbency key right off the top, and youre much more likely to have an internal party battle for who will be the nominee to take over from Joe Biden, he said.
Conversely, although he stopped just short of making a prediction, Mr Lichtman believes the 2024 presidential vote could be problematic for the Republican party.
It doesnt look like the Republicans have anyone who fulfils the challenge charisma key, the once-in-a-generation inspirational candidate, like Franklin Roosevelt or Ronald Reagan, he said, pointing to the potential for a power vacuum in the party.
How Do Republicans Feel About Trump
Polling is one indication of Trumps sway over the GOP. By the end of his presidency, he had an approval rating of just 38.6%, and an October 2021 Pew Research poll found that only 44% of Republicans want Trump to run again in 2024.
But his supporters are die-hards, and some happen to be party elites and major GOP donors. Despite Trump’s 2020 electoral loss and two impeachments, his rallies are still highly attended by enthusiastic participants. And, following Trump’s criticism of the Commission on Presidential Debates as biased against him during the 2020 election, the Republican National Committee signaled its plan to require its candidates to withdraw from presidential debates.
As Perry says, He has a solid 30% or so of the American people behind him seemingly no matter what.
For now, Trump is also maintaining strong fiscal support. At the start of 2022, his team announced that its various political committees had amassed $122 million in funding. In local, state, and federal elections, the candidate who spends more money on their campaign tends to win the election. So even though Trump has yet to officially announce his 2024 candidacy, entering with millions in cash would provide him with an advantage, covering major campaign expenses such as staff salaries, wide-reaching ads, and frequent travel to campaign in key areas.
