  • Lower the fixture and disconnect the wires by twisting off the plastic connectors from the ends of the wires.

Install New Outlet Box

Remove a knockout on the outlet box and attach a cable clamp. Feed the supply line through the clamp so the line extends 6 inches from the box. Guide the outlet box through the opening in the ceiling and align the box with the u-bolt brace. If the hole in the ceiling is too small, use a keyhole saw to enlarge it. Attach the outlet box directly to the brace with the washers and nuts provided. Please note that the bottom of the box must be recessed a minimum of 1/16 inch into the ceiling.

Create A Balanced Look

The positioning of downlights is important to create a balanced look. This ensures that there are no shadows and the lights produce maximum light possible to brighten up the given space. The starting point should be at least 2 feet away from the edge of walls. It is then crucially important to distribute the lights evenly across the room.

How To Shorten A Ceiling Fan Downrod

Ceiling fans no longer come in just black or white they are offered in a variety of finishes and styles that can draw the eye to the fan. Ceiling fans can complement your decor. They can become as indispensable to the interior design as a table lamp, so when you move, you move the ceiling fan with you. If the ceiling height in your new home is lower than your previous home, you can shorten your ceiling fan downrod to fit the room rather than purchase a new one.

1

2

Wrap the downrod in a towel or cloth. Insert the downrod into a vise. Rotate the downrod until the clevis pin openings in the sides on each end face upward toward the ceiling. Tighten the vise to ensure the downrod does not move.

3

Cut the downrod along the cut line, using a hacksaw. Smooth the cut edges, using a round file.

4

Measure 1/2-inch from the cut end of the downrod and mark that point, using a felt-tipped marker. Ensure the mark on the downrod lines up with the clevis pin opening on the end of the rod still in the vise.

5

Attach a 1/2-inch metal drill bit to a power drill. Position the drill bit over the mark you made at the end of the downrod. Drill straight through both sides the downrod to create a clevis pin opening.

6

Remove the shortened downrod from the vise.

    Optimal Sizing Speed And Placement

Use this formula to find the best fan size for a rooms occupied space : Occupied space divided by 4 equals the blade span . Step blade span down a bit for rooms with low ceilings, and go wider if the ceilings are high.

Another good rule of thumb is to remember that blade spans of less than 36 inches are ideal for spaces smaller than 75 square feet, such as baths and breakfast nooks. Spans of 36 to 42 inches work in rooms of up to 225 square feet, like a dining room. Larger living rooms and bedrooms can handle 50- to 54-inch blades.

Make sure that the cubic feet of air that the fan moves per minute , measured at high speed, is near the top of its class. Some 52-inch fans, for instance, rate as low as 2,050 cfm, while others reach 7,800. High-cfm fans not only provide a better breeze, they usually have robust motors that will last longer and run more quietly.

For optimal performance, the fan should be hung at least 1 1/2 feet from the wall or a sloped ceiling, 7- to 10-feet from the floor, and at least 8 inches from the ceiling. Steer clear of hanging the fan too close to any lights, as rotating blades under a bulb will create an annoying flicker.

Where To Hang A Ceiling Fan

Choosing an installation site is as important as selecting the ceiling fan itself. The right location ensures your safety as well as the fan’s performance and efficiency. When selecting an installation site, consider the following details:

  • Ceiling fans provide optimal airflow when hung at least 8 to 9 feet above the floor.
  • Ceiling fan blades must hang at least 7 feet above the floor. If you are installing a fan on a high or sloped ceiling, you may need a longer downrod to maintain blade clearance.
  • Ceiling fan blades must hang at least 8 to 10 inches below the ceiling.
  • Ceiling fan blades must be at least 18 inches away from wall, doors, cabinets, and posts.
  • Confirm the location on the ceiling and the surrounding area is not cracked or damaged.

Calculate Wattage For Lighting Up Space

Calculate the required wattage for lighting up the space so you may know how many LED downlights you will need. This is usually done by multiplying the square footage of the room by 1.5. Choose the right type of bulb and see its wattage. Divide the total wattage by the wattage of bulbs and you will know the number of lights to be installed. Also, it is wise to install more number of lower power LED lights to have an even distribution of light instead of higher power lights. It is true that LED downlights can only partly light up a room as the lumens and covering space is less. However, multiple lights placed in an area enable you to switch off or even dim the lights whenever you want.

Remove Box And Cut New Hole

    • Remove the old electrical box from the ceiling. If it’s nailed to a joist, pry it free with a flat bar. If it’s suspended from a bar, you may have to take off a metal plate to unscrew the box then pry the bar from the joists.
    • Hold a 1/2-inch-thick pancake box against the ceiling, centered on a joist, and trace around it with a pencil.
    • Cut along the line with a drywall saw.

Tip: Hold a vacuum cleaner wand next to the saw to catch the dust.

  • Connect white wire from the ceiling to white wire from the receiver marked “AC In” with a wire nut.
  • Turn the connections up and push them through the hanger bracket into the outlet box. Separate the wire connections, with the grounded wires on one side of the outlet box and the ungrounded wires on the other side of the box. Be careful not to pinch any wire connections.

    Choose Dimmable Led Downlights

    Patriot Lighting Ceiling Fan Reviews

Make your lighting fixtures flexible so as to tune them according to your mood. Dimmer switches should be used to control lights in different zones. Also make sure to choose between cool white light and warm white light before you install light fixtures. This will save your time as you will have the right type of lights at the time of installation which will last longer without need of replacement.
