We could have some more governors or representatives run, or even other nontraditional candidates, like a Trump family member, a Fox News host or a celebrity, like Dwayne The Rock Johnson, whos said hes seriously considering a run. Stranger things have happened.

Brock Pierce is a former child actor who appeared in the Mighty Ducks franchise and starred as the presidents son in the 1996 comedy First Kid. But thanks to his second career as a tech entrepreneur, hes also probably a crypto currency billionaire.

Why is he running for president? Partly because he is deeply concerned by the state of the country.

I think that we lack a real vision for the future I mean, what kind of world do we want to live in, in the year 2030? What is the plan? Where are we trying to get to, you know? You have to aim for something. And I see mostly just a lot of mud being thrown around, not a lot of people putting forth game-changing ideas. Its getting scary. And I have a view of what to do.

For the last four years, Mr Pierce has focused on philanthropic work in Puerto Rico, where his foundation recently raised a million dollars for PPE to give to first responders.

Asked what Americas priorities should be for the next four years, he suggests the country stops pursuing growth for growths sake, and measures its success by how well life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are upheld.

I have many liberal tendencies, just like I have conservative tendencies, Mr Pierce says. And I think its time we take a collective breath and a brave step into the future, because all of these ideologies have something to teach us.

Mike Pence. Mike Pompeo. Rick Scott. They share big ambitions, but one name hovers above them all

President Biden told reporters last month that his plan is to run for re-election, despite already being the oldest person to have won a presidential election. So, for now at least, the question of who will lead the Democratic ticket in 2024 has been put to rest.

On the Republican side, however, certainty is in short supply. Its beyond early to be talking about the next presidential election but thats only if you arent planning to run. Some Republican candidates have already made trips to Iowa and New Hampshire, and others are laying plans to go, in what often represents the first step in building out a campaign operation in those early-voting states.

And on Wednesday, in a conspicuously forward-looking move, former Vice President Mike Pence announced the formation of a new political organization, Advancing American Freedom, whose advisory board is stacked high with former Trump administration officials and allies. The news came on the same day Simon & Schuster announced that it would publish Pences autobiography as part of a two-book deal.

The G.O.P. is badly fractured, trying to hold together a dominant base of those loyal to former President Donald Trump and a stubborn minority of pro-decorum, anti-Trump conservatives. Anyone looking to grab the Republican mantle will have to find some way of satisfying both camps and maybe even expanding upon them.

Historically, experience as Veep isnt a bad launching pad for the presidency. Six former vice presidents went on to become president, including, of course, President Joe Biden, and an additional five won their partys nomination. For 61-year-old Pence, though, the upside of his time as vice president is more of an open question.

Trumps 2020 pollster Tony Fabrizio found that if the former president doesnt run in the 2024 election, his supporters gravitate most to Pence, DeSantis and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, so there is plenty of support there. But on Jan. 6, when Pence announced Biden as the winner of the 2020 election, he complicated things.

Hes got this tricky position, said Steven Webster, and assistant professor of political science at Indiana University Bloomington. I think increasingly the base of the Republican Party is aligned with Donald Trump, and Mike Pence is really seen with hostility by Trumps base, simply for performing his constitutional duty on the 6th.

Pence appears to be well aware of the predicament. Earlier this month, he published an op-ed voicing his concern over supposed voting irregularities in the 2020 election, though he didnt mention any specifically. Trumps own administration said the election was the most secure in American history.

Pence and his wife, Karen, have three children. Pence is a former conservative radio host who served seven terms in the U.S. House before becoming governor of Indiana.

It is not hard to imagine Trump invoking the spirit of Jacksons 1828 campaign against the corrupt bargain, if he runs in 2024 against the steal .

Jackson, the ultimate outsider in his own time, makes a far better template for Trump than either Cleveland or Teddy Roosevelt â even though the latter two were New Yorkers like Trump.

Two New York governors, two decades apart

For now, Cleveland remains the only two-term president who had a time out between terms. When he first won in 1884, he was the first Democratic president elected in 28 years, and he won by the micro-margin of just 25,000 votes nationwide. He won because he carried New York, where he was governor at the time, adding its electoral votes to those of Democratic-leaning states in the South â which preferred a Democratic Yankee to a Republican Yankee.

Potent as it was, that language backfired by alienating enough Catholics in New York to elect Cleveland, himself a Protestant. His margin in his home state was a mere thousand votes, but it was enough to deliver a majority in the Electoral College.

News of the election of Abraham Lincoln prompted a public demonstration in Savannahâs Johnson Square, at which the first flag of Southern independence was flown and a resolution adopted for a state secession convention. A sketch of the scene by Belgium-born artist Henry Cleenewerck, who was in Savannah at the time, was used by R. H. Howell to create this lithograph. Trump could run again in 2024. If he does, it is hard to see anyone beating him for the Republican nomination.

Although Trump lost the presidential election by around 7 million votes, he is by far the most popular figure in the nation with GOP voters. He has enormous fundraising prowess he raised about $170 million in the month after the election and he can drive media attention like no one else.

Still, Trump will be 78 by the time of the next election. He also faces financial pressures, with large debts coming due in the next few years. He will continue to command headlines but there are solid reasons why he may not run for the presidency again.

There is speculative chatter that one of Trumps children, perhaps his elder daughter Ivanka, could enter the political arena. But here are some other front-line contenders for the GOP nomination in 2024.

Lincolnâs 1860 election victory was marred by the quick secession of seven Southern statesâSouth Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texasâwhich, in February 1861, declared themselves to be a new nation, the Confederate States of America. Although urged to address the growing crisis of Union, Lincoln declined, explaining that he had written and spoken often on the subject, and that further explanation of his position on slavery would only be misconstrued. He hoped that Southern Unionists would prevail as they had done in past crises and restore their states to the Union. However, with a few notable exceptions, Southerners united behind secession.

A fragment of President Lincolnâs First Inaugural Address is attached to this speech intended for Kentuckians, indicating that it was prepared prior to his journey from Springfield to Washington. Lincoln As A Potential Presidential Candidate

William H. Herndon, Lincolnâs law partner and the man who perhaps knew him best, once described Lincolnâs ambition as an engine that knew no rest. After the grueling series of debates with Stephen A. Douglas, many Illinois Republicans, such as Thomas Pickett, viewed Lincoln as a possible candidate for president of the United States. In his response to this letter from Pickett, Lincoln stated that he did not consider himself fit for the presidency. However, he was quite aware of the swelling tide of support his candidacy would bring and may only have been attempting to avoid making himself an early target for the opposition party.

Trump Endorsement Doesn’t Deter Challengers

The Trump endorsement has hardly had the effect of clearing, or even winnowing, the field of GOP hopefuls. The final number is not yet set, but as recently as this month a political newcomer and military veteran named Marjorie Eastman entered the fray, though analysts say she’s a long shot at best.

One of the more prominent hopefuls is Mark Walker, a former congressman and Baptist minister. He’s been taking an unusual step for a white Republican candidate in a primary: reaching out specifically to North Carolina’s African American community. His pitch to socially conservative Black voters who might typically back a Democrat includes campaign materials showing him outside the old Woolworth store in Greensboro the scene of landmark 1960 civil rights sit-ins to confront segregation.

“We’re trying to show that you do not have to be one-dimensional,” he said in an interview. “You can be a strong conservative, but you also can find a way to share your heart in a manner that attracts people to what we believe, as opposed to repels them.”

He says it’s something Republicans need to do more of.

Which Republican President Inspired The Teddy Bear

Theodore Roosevelt, a Republican U.S. president from 1901 to 1909, inspired the teddy bear when he refused to shoot a tied-up bear on a hunting trip. The story reached toy maker Morris Michtom, who decided to make stuffed bears as a dedication to Roosevelt. The name comes from Roosevelts nickname, Teddy.
