Here Come The Trump 2024 Alternatives
Its the early or perhaps silly season of the 2024 presidential-election cycle, and the only actual candidate in the field is former president Donald Trump. Among Republicans, Trump remains the front-runner despite pervasive signs of GOP fatigue with him, and the fears his destructive involvement in a disappointing 2022 midterm election have fanned even in MAGA-land. If Trump thought his early 2024 announcement would clear the field of potential rivals as the party base swooned over him all over again, he was wrong. But flirting with a run against the King and stimulating speculation among the chattering classes isnt the same thing as mounting an actual campaign against the man who has been underestimated so many times before.
Right now, the so-called invisible primary of scribbling and gabbing, winking and whispering, probably reflects the fantasy world of Republicans as much as any real prospects for winning the nomination. So the right question today may be what prospective candidates bring to this GOP dreamscape of a future more promising than a Biden-Trump rematch. Below are some of the mentioned and the longings they represent.
Former Un Ambassador Nikki Haley
Haley, the former governor of South Carolina, headlined an event for the Republican Party of Iowa in suburban Des Moines in June 2021. She also attended a slew of other events on behalf of local party operations and Iowa elected officials.
At a June 2022 event in Sioux Center, Haley said she will run for president in 2024 if theres a place for me.”
What I’ve always said is, I love this country, she told reporters. I had the pleasure of serving the state that raised me and defending the country I love so much. And if it looks like there’s a place for me next year, I’ve never lost a race. I’m not going to start now. I’ll put 1,000% in and I’ll finish it. If there’s not a place for me, I will fight for this country until my last breath.
And How Does This Make Us Feel
So Jeff looks like the guy who used to walk around campus with double-layered pastel polos and his collar popped back in college. In reality he is very conservative and religious, which stems from his faith and upbringing in the Latter-day Saints Church. As can be expected, he votes v pro-life and basically thinks abortions/contraceptives shouldnt be available so thats a no for me. However, compared to Trump he has been publicly against the travel ban for Muslim countries, voted for more gun control, and thinks the GOP needs to solve the immigration problem in a rational way, aka not with a wall. Overall like, not horrible and would be able to play nice with others. However, Roe v. Wade happened and if you cant get over that then you cant sit with us.

And How Would We Describe Our Mood
Mitt is kinda your standard conservative, pro-life, white male in office. Hes come close before and tbh looking back I thought he was the WOAT, but now that weve had Trump he doesnt seem so bad. But like, if youve already lost so many times, its not meant to be, or maybe America doesnt want you. Idk just spit ballin here.
Nikki Haley: Something For Everybody
During a recent stay at Chicagos Blackstone Hotel, where famously a smoke-filled room of Republican leaders made Warren G. Harding the GOP nominee and the 29th president, I thought about the kind of presidential candidate a similar assemblage of Republicans today might choose were it possible to do so, and quickly settled on former South Carolina Governor and U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley. Its not that Haley and Harding have much in common personally I am not accusing her at all of the kind of sexual misconduct or inveterate cronyism for which Harding became famous soon after his untimely death. I do think Harding and Haley were equally at home in the shallowest depth of public policy thinking, and above all shared a knack for being in the right place at the right time. If somehow a 2024 Republican deadlock developed, the party might turn to Haley as someone with something for everybody, wrapped in some nice packaging.

And What Are We Feeling Now
LOL. Kasich only won his own states primary and didnt really have a shot before, no idea why he thinks he should try again. He really hasnt done anything notable since 2016, so not really going to be a strong candidate. Good for Kasich though, because he is the only one who seems to know what he wants and isnt playing the coy political game of oh, idk if I would really want the job We all know you do, so just admit it.
How Do You Win The 2020 Democratic Presidential Nomination
The short version is you have to win a majority of the delegates.
Every state has different rules for its primary elections or caucuses in terms of allocating delegates. Candidates win delegates proportional to where they finish in the results, though they generally have to hit a minimum threshold of 15 percent to be awarded any delegates.
There will be an estimated 3,979 delegates for the 2020 Democratic National Convention up for grabs during the primary elections. One candidate needs to win at least 1,991 delegates to be nominated.
You might hear talk of a brokered or contested convention if no candidate gets the necessary delegates to win on the first ballot. That currently seems very unlikely. The FiveThirtyEight forecast, as of March 19, projects that theres a one-in-100 chance of no candidate getting a majority of votes . There hasnt been a brokered convention in decades.
Democrats have made one major change from the 2016 primary on superdelegates elected officials, party leaders, and other prominent Democrats who have votes in addition to the regular delegates awarded by state elections. In the past, superdelegates didnt have to follow any rules and could back whichever candidate they desire and make up their minds at any point in the process. When most of them endorsed Hillary Clinton in 2016, it gave her a built-in delegate advantage over Bernie Sanders, though she still won enough votes independent of the superdelegates to secure the nomination.

Us Sen Ted Cruz Of Texas
Cruz leveraged a sophisticated ground game and widespread evangelical support to defeat Trump and win Iowa’s 2016 GOP caucuses. He told Newsmax in July 2021 that he is “certainly looking at” running for president again in 2024.
He campaigned on behalf of U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst in October 2020, and he returned to headline a fundraiser for U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson as she prepared to run for reelection in 2022. He traveled to Iowa in August to hold a fundraiser with U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley.

When Are The Next 2020 Democratic Presidential Primary Election Debates
The Democratic National Committee announced it would hold 12 debates, starting in June 2019 and extending into 2020.
The 11th debate of the Democratic primary was held on March 15 in Washington DC the location was switched from Arizona and held without an audience to reduce the risk of coronavirus transmission. No future debates have been announced yet.
Former Secretary Of State Mike Pompeo
Mike Pompeo, like Pence, has yet to announce an official 2024 bid. However, the former state secretary in June ran a digital ad through his political action committee in the early-voting states of Iowa and South Carolina.
Pompeo has not indicated when he plans to announce a 2024 bid, should he decide on launching one. However, he said that Trump’s presidential bid will not affect his own 2024 ambitions, The Hill reported, citing Pompeo’s conversation with radio host Hugh Hewitt.

Tensions bubbled to the surface at the first major gathering of possible Republican 2024 presidential candidates this weekend as party members voiced a desire to move on from former U.S. President Donald Trump, though even his detractors wondered if that would be possible.
Fresh off a disappointing performance in midterm elections, which saw them win a smaller-than-expected majority in the U.S. House of Representatives and fail to take control of the Senate, Republicans worried aloud about Trump’s prospects.
“If Donald Trump is the face of the Republican Party, it’s always going to cost us a couple of points,” said Eric Levine, an attorney and Republican fundraiser from New York.
Dispute Over The Status Of The Republican Party And Its National Convention
The Republican Party is a private unincorporated association which operates through the agreement of its members rather than a set of bylaws or permanent charter. The party is instead governed by Robert’s Rules of Order and any rules of order adopted at the party’s most recent convention.
Curly Haugland, a former member of the Republican National Committee , said the party’s continued existence is dependent on the quadrennial convention of delegates to re-establish the party. Failing to properly convene the convention of delegates, therefore, would jeopardize the party’s survival.
He said the phrase “until the next national convention” in the third and final paragraph of the Preamble of the Rules of the Republican Party, as amended by the Republican National Committee on July 20, 2018, indicates the party’s impermanent structure:

Will Biden Run Again Voters Overwhelmingly Don’t Want Him To Poll Shows
Biden has said he intends to seek reelection in 2024, though he has noted he won’t make his final decision until early next year.
A USA TODAY/Suffolk University Poll last month found that by 64%-26% voters did not want Biden to seek a second term. But the numbers are a change from the summer, when 69%-22% said they didn’t want Biden to run.
The poll also found that in a prospective presidential race, Biden led Trump 46%-42%.

Us Sen Marco Rubio Of Florida
Rubio, who came in third place during Iowa’s 2016 GOP caucuses, returned for events in Mason City and Ames in August 2021. He told reporters hes focused on helping the friends he made in the first-in-the-nation caucus state while gearing up for his own reelection Senate bid.
Having done this once, there’s no purpose of being coy about it, I’m running for reelection in Florida to serve in the United States Senate, he said. I’m not having any conversations about running for president, but I have friends here.
