How Often Do Ac Compressors Need To Be Replaced

How replace compressor 2011 Jeep Patriot 2.4

Failure of the air conditioning compressor is common because moisture or clogs in the system will place stress on the compressor.

Compressor clutch failure is much more common on older vehicles. In general, AC compressors tend to fail after 60,000 to 70,000 miles, but that time may vary depending on use, demand and operating conditions.

Why Is My Ac Blowing Hot Air

Between the compressor, the AC clutch, and the refrigerant level, there are several reasons why a car air conditioner can stop blowing cold air:

  • Refrigerant loss: Low refrigerant is the most common cause of AC problems, and the solution is a Car AC Recharge — plus repairs to any leaking AC components that may be causing your vehicle to lose refrigerant faster than expected.
  • Blocked air flow: Anywhere between the compressor, the condenser, and the air vents into your cabin, any blockage to air flow will shut down your AC system.
  • Broken or worn AC parts: Depending on the vehicle, your AC system may include a compressor, AC clutch, condenser, thermal expansion drive, receiver, dryer, orifice tube, accumulator, evaporator, and blower. Any of these parts, and the lines and connections between them, may need service.

Ambient Temperature Affect On Refrigerant Pressure

The refrigerant pressure is affected by the outside atmospheric temperature. So, even if you recharged your Patriot AC at the recommended pressure, the system could still over pressurize when the ambient temperatures get warmer.

Most modern vehicles use R-134a refrigerant, but newer vehicles are increasingly using R-1234yf as a more environmentally friendly replacement. The pressure values based on ambient temperatures differ depending on the type of the refrigerant. Check your vehicles owners manual or look under the hood to find the type of the refrigerant your vehicle uses.

Test The Compressor Clutch

You can use a jump wire to determine if your Jeep Patriots AC compressor clutch is activating properly. But, first, youll need to locate the compressor relay.

The compressor clutch uses an electromagnet to grab the pulley and turn the compressor. You should hear a clunk sound as this magnet is activated .

Youll need a jump wire. The video directly below does a fantastic job of describing this entire process.

Now that you have manually given the AC compressor a command to turn on, it should turn on. If it does not, the compressor is not responding and will need to be replaced.

What Are The Signs That My Car Ac Is Going Out

  • Your vehicle AC doesnt cool your cabin as effectively as it used to: If warm air from your vents is your first sign of AC trouble, the culprit may be a minor problem, like low coolant or a clogged vent. You could also have a broken fan.
  • Your AC makes unfamiliar sounds: What you hear rattling around in your cars climate control system could also be a minor problem, like debris ingested from outside. It could also be a broken part anywhere in the system.
  • Your vehicle cabin smells bad: Mold in your car AC system a respiratory health hazard can generate a funky smell. New odors from your vehicle also need immediate attention. They signal simple problems like an overdue air filter replacement and significant safety hazards like Exhaust Leaks.
  • Coolant stains under your vehicle: Car AC coolant has a sweet smell and a texture that people describe as greasy, filmy, or slimy.
  • Water leaking into your vehicle: A healthy AC system will drain water outside your vehicle. But a clog in your water line can cause water to back up in other places, like your floor mats.

Inspect Your Patriots Ac/serpentine Belt

As stated above, your Patriots AC compressor may be turned by the serpentine belt that turns all of the engine accessories. Or, it may be turned by an independent belt. If there are two belts, theyll both be attached at the crank pulley.

Inspect the belt to see if it is cracked or shiny. It may just be that the belt cant turn the compressor anymore. It could even be missing entirely without you noticing if it is an independent belt.

After inspecting the belt, there can only be two things left that could be happening:

1. The clutch is not getting a signal to turn on. This indicates some form of wiring problem.

-or-

2. The AC compressor is getting a command to turn on but is no longer able to, which would indicate that it needs replacing.

Check Your Patriots Ac Wiring Harness

Being that the clutch compressor is just a few feet off of the road, it can accrue wiring damage over the years.

Inspect the harness to make sure that it doesnt have any opens or shorts. If it looks good, its time to move on to testing the relay and seeing if you can manually get the compressor to turn on.

The power going to the AC compressor relay is going to be fused, so check that fuse while youre at it as well. You can do this in under 2 minutes with a test light.

What Is An Ac Compressor

An AC compressor is a necessary component in your cars air conditioning system. Air conditioning being the AC in AC compressor”, if you didn’t already figure that out.The AC compressor serves two main purposes. First, it pumps the refrigerant through the air conditioning system. And second, it creates pressure for the refrigerant. Both of these things are crucial when it comes to creating cold air, which Im guessing is something you would like your cars air conditioning system to be able to do.The bulk of AC compressors get their power from the drive belt or belts. Depending on the type of car you have, the AC compressor may be controlled by an AC compressor clutch, which is engaged when you use the climate control buttons, or it may be of the variable displacement variety, which uses a control valve. Some cars even have their AC compressor running at all times, just at varying levels. Its fairly common for elements in your cars air conditioning system to die with wear and tear. The AC compressor is especially vulnerable, due to the fact that a leak in the refrigerant will result in low levels of lubricant for the AC compressor. This is the primary cause of failure.

Jeep Patriot: Ac Compressor Not Turning On Diagnosis

No matter where you live if your Jeep Patriots AC compressor is not turning on, it can turn a pleasant commute into a nightmare .

The AC compressor pulley is always being turned by either the serpentine belt or a dedicated belt . It uses a clutch to grab the pulley and cycle coolant through your Patriots AC system.

If this clutch doesnt grab, the AC compressor will not turn on.

Before opening the hood to see if there is anything wrong with the AC compressor, start the Patriot and turn the AC off and back on a few times. Do it somewhere quiet.

If you hear a thunk or clunk noise after turning the AC on, the compressor is engaging. Something else is the problem. Theres most likely a leak, bad evaporator, or a bad compressor . If thats the case, jump to this article: Jeep Patriot AC Not Blowing Cold.

Heres how to about diagnosing why your AC is not turning on in your Jeep Patriot:

Anytime you open the AC system it is advised to have a vacuum put on it before charging it. If you do not have the equipment to do that, you will need to take it to someone that does. Of course you can purchase the tools you need to do it yourself. The kit has come way down on price too. See below.

    Causes Of Compressor Failure

Insufficient lubricant: The compressor in Patriot needs lubrication to function properly and minimize mechanical wear by reducing friction. If there isnt enough oil added with the refrigerant or to the compressor itself if it was replaced, the internal components of the compressor will wear out and cease to function.

Too much oil: If there is excessive amount of oil added with the refrigerant, it can cause compressor performance issues which reduces cooling efficiency, and can also cause premature compressor failure.

Keep in mind, an AC compressor can fail without any apparent cause, especially in older vehicles or in vehicles that have racked up too many miles. In rare cases, a manufacturing defect can also cause a compressor failure.

    Use Obd2 Scanner For Diagnosis

Since Jeep Patriot is equipped with on-board diagnostics , a fault diagnosis can provide initial indications of where the malfunction is located in the air conditioning system.

To begin troubleshooting, you must first connect the diagnostic tool to your Patriot. The OBDII connector is usually located under the dashboard. With the tool connected, turn on the ignition. Most diagnostic devices then ask for some information about the vehicle. It is important that you enter this 100% correctly, otherwise the result of the search may be inaccurate. In addition to the vehicle make, model, and engine type, you usually also have to type in the Vehicle Identification Number . Since some OBD codes are manufacturer-specific, the scanner will be able to give you more accurate information if you enter more details about your Patriot.

Clogged Expansion Valve Or Orifice Tube

Jeep patriot 2 litre 4×4 2013 air compressor replacement video 4

Your vehicles air conditioning system has an expansion vale or an orifice tube, depending on the model. The function of both expansion valve and orifice tube is the same, to restrict the flow and reduce pressure of the refrigerant before it enters the evaporator coil. Both of these are at risk of clogging due to contamination, for example due to metal shavings from a failing compressor.

In case of contamination, you may have to flush out the contaminants from the AC system of your Patriot, including the condenser and the evaporator, before putting in the new part. In case of severe contamination, multiple components may have to be replaced, including the condenser, the evaporator and the compressor.

Can You Clean A Dirty Cabin Air Filter

Instead of changing the cabin air filter in Patriot, it is often recommended to first clean the filter. This can be done, for example, with a vacuum cleaner or a compressed air system, removing at least a large part of the visible dirt particles. Unfortunately, this procedure does not allow you to get into the deeper layers of the filter. Therefore, the filter performance will not increase significantly even after cleaning. As a rule, there is no avoiding a change if the filter is dirty.

What Are The Symptoms Of A Bad Ac Compressor

You know your car AC system needs service when it cools less effectively or refuses to kick in at all — but here are some signs that your compressor is the culprit:

    • Unusual compressor noise: In the compressor, worn-out bearings or other interior components can cause friction.
    • Visible damage, debris, or dirt on the compressor.
    • The compressor clutch wont engage: Listen the next time you turn your AC on. Youll hear a switch moving before your compressor kicks in. Thats the clutch switch. It can break .

In most cases, a vehicle with a bad air conditioning compressor is safe to drive.

However, if grinding is heard from the compressor pulley, bearing failure may occur, causing the serpentine belt to come off. If this occurs, the battery warning light will illuminate, and the engine will stall due to lack of electrical power.

Jeedup’s picture looks to be of the 2007-2008 style. My 2014 factory service manual looks more similar nth256’s picture and says that clutch removal is possible with the compressor on the engine, but you may need to loosen or remove the compressor mounting bolts for better access. You simple grab on to the pulley, remove the center bolt, and tap the pulley to gently work it off the shaft. Snap ring pliers are needed to disassemble the clutch assembly, a moot point in this instance.
