West Watches Where Russian Troops And Equipment Might Move

Michael Bloomberg announces bid for president

As Western diplomats seek to parse Russias announcement of a partial withdrawal of some of the estimated 130,000 troops near Ukraines borders, its what-gets-moved-where that will indicate the Kremlins intentions.

To be meaningful, any withdrawal must be substantial and include heavy land equipment such as tanks, according to Henry Boyd, a research fellow for defense and military analysis at the International Institute for Strategic Studies. The troops would need to return to home barracks across Russia, rather than the closer makeshift bases they were in recently until moving up near the border, Boyd said.

There has to be equipment, it is too quick and easy to move personnel backward and forwards, said Boyd. Otherwise, you are just shifting from the potential for invasion within a couple of days to within a week. Any semi-withdrawal could also be part of a deception operation: yes, it could be genuine, or yes it could be false and in essence the two things wouldnt look too different at this point in time.

Bloomberg Becomes Democrat Again Looks At Presidential Run

WASHINGTON — Former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg is officially a Democrat again.

The global media company founder on Wednesday said he has registered as a Democrat, which would be especially significant if he decides to challenge President Donald Trump in 2020. Bloomberg says on social media he did so “because we need Democrats to provide the checks and balance our nation so badly needs.”

Bloomberg did not say when he might make a decision on running for president. He served three terms as New York City mayor and has variously been a Democrat, a Republican and an independent. He twice flirted with running for president as an independent candidate.

Bloomberg has thrown money and support behind Democrats and is attacking Republicans on abortion and gun policies.

Did Trump give Bloomberg the correct nickname?

While hes been masterful in this choosing of nicknames so far, the one hes bestowed upon the former mayor of New York City may have been a little shortsighted

No pun intended.

Weve often called Joe Biden Floppy Joe simply because of his penchant for switching his stance on different issues

But maybe we should have stuck with Trumps original moniker of Sleepy Joe as he seems to make most of his speeches right after waking up from a nap.

Think about it

Over the past few weeks, Joe has said that hes running for Senator and that 150 million Americans have been shot since 2007 so sleepy is definitely more apropos.

Now, as far as Bloomberg is concerned

Mini-Mike is an awesome nickname.

Its fitting and the alliteration helps it roll of the tongue easily.

However, is there a more fitting moniker? Because while Floppy Joe has instant recognition due to its similarity to Sloppy Joe , Floppy may better describe Bloomberg. After all, hes switched parties so many times that hes practically given voters whiplash.

Support Will Present Problems

Bloomberg’s endorsements and cash behind Pennsylvania Republicans “will present its problems,” said John Cordisco, chairman of the Democratic Party in Bucks County, where Fitzpatrick’s district is based. “There’s going to be a core of Democrats that are going to need to understand what prompted him to do that, and it just doesn’t remain within the borders of Bucks County. Other groups throughout Pennsylvania are going to be asking those same questions.”

Bloomberg wasn’t alone in praising Toomey and Fitzpatrick, two of the rare Republicans to support tougher gun laws. Former Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was gravely wounded in a mass shooting, also backed both men, along with endorsing a number of Democrats.

Gun control groups know that bipartisan support will almost certainly be required to pass any new measures and have sought to reward the few Republicans who have crossed party lines on the issue. More broadly, Bloombergs political groups, Independence USA and Everytown for Gun Safety, have mostly supported Democrats, including Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf and four Democratic House candidates in Pennsylvania swing districts in 2018.

As a single-issue, nonpartisan organization, Everytown is committed to working with lawmakers who support passing stronger gun laws regardless of political party, spokesperson Taylor Maxwell said in an email. Gun safety isnt a right or left issue its a matter of life or death.

Mike Bloomberg Is Known For His Philanthropy

Michael Bloomberg attends the Hudson River Park Annual Gala at Cipriani South Street on October 17, 2019 in New York City.

Since leaving the New York City mayors office in 2014, Bloomberg has run Bloomberg Philanthropies, which is described on its website as a data-driven approach to global change.

Bloomberg Philanthropies focuses on five key areas for creating lasting change: public health, environment, education, government innovation, and arts & culture. These five areas encompass the issues Mike Bloomberg and his team are most passionate about, and where they believe the greatest good can be achieved, its website says.

Mike Bloomberg has always been attracted to challenges where the potential for controversy or failure keeps others at bay. That approach comes from his entrepreneurial instincts and his belief in leading from the front, regardless of popular opinion or special interest politics.

In 2010, Bloomberg signed on to the Giving Pledge, an agreement among 40 of the worlds billionaires, including Richard Branson, Warren Buffett and Bill Gates, who pledged to give the majority of their wealth to charity.

As I wrote in my autobiography the reality of great wealth is that you cant spend it and you cant take it with you, he said.

Why Did Bloomberg Not Run As A Republican

Michael Bloomberg: Who is the Democrat candidate? – US Election BBC Newsnight

Bloomberg ran as a Republican for mayor of New York City. His declared goal is to throw Trump out of office.

If this is his primary goal wouldn’t it have been better to try to run against him in the Republican primary? If Bloomberg won against Trump, a reelection would not even be an option. If Bloomberg did not win, he still would have been able to spend all his anti-Trump ads and make the path to the presidency easier for the Democratic nominee.

So wouldn’t it have been smarter for Bloomberg to run as a Republican?

  • 1Mar 2, 2020 at 2:23
  • 3It may be worth recalling that Bloomberg was a Republican for only six years: he joined the party in 2001 and left it in 2007. Before 2001, he was a Democrat. Between 2007 and 2018, he was an independent. Mar 3, 2020 at 12:33
  • @Mazura Reagan in 1976 was very close to beating Ford, though he was only sort-of the incumbent.

So wouldn’t it be smarter for Bloomberg to run as a Republican?

No, for the simple reason that Donald Trump is incredibly popular with both the Republican Party and its voters. As of September 2019, Trump’s approval rating among Republicans is 84%, and in the five Republican primaries run so far, he has earned 91.2% of the overall vote and all but one delegate.

All this would make it next to impossible for anyone to unseat Trump during the Republican primaries. Winning the Democratic nomination and going head-to-head against Trump in the main election is by far his best chance.

Michael Bloomberg: Everything You Need To Know About The 2020 Presidential Candidate

The former New York City mayor has entered the race of president.

Who is Mike Bloomberg?

Former New York City Mayor and founder of Bloomberg LP Michael Bloomberg formally entered the 2020 presidential race in November 2019. He is the second billionaire Democrat to seek the presidency during this election cycle.

Out of the running: By Super Tuesday, it was clear that Bloombergs efforts to target the 15 contests in play in lieu of traditional campaigning methods of hitting the early voting states did not pay off in terms of netting the bulk of pledged delegates or the popular vote. He announced the next day that he entered the race three months earlier to defeat President Donald Trump and that he was leaving the race for the same reason because it is clear to me that staying in would make achieving that goal more difficult, he wrote in a letter to supporters adding, Ive always believed that defeating Donald Trump starts with uniting behind the candidate with the best shot to do it. After yesterdays vote, it is clear that candidate is my friend and a great American, Joe Biden.

Date of Birth: Feb. 14, 1942

Hometown: Medford, Massachusetts

Michael Bloomberg Helped Republican Pat Toomey Win Big In 2016 Now He Wants The Democratic Nomination For President

As Michael Bloomberg edges closer to entering the Democratic race for president, he faces deep skepticism on the left over his Wall Street background and his record as New York City mayor. Those problems might be exacerbated in Pennsylvania.

In the last two federal election cycles, Bloomberg helped two high-profile Republicans win critical races in the Keystone State.

Gun control groups backed by Bloomberg endorsed U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey in 2016 and U.S. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick in 2018, lending weight to their pitch to voters that they were independent voices who could collaborate across the aisle. In both races, the lawmakers were trying to win over moderate swing voters, and each narrowly squeaked to reelection.

They are two of a handful of Republicans who have supported expanding background checks for gun purchases, a top Democratic priority and one Bloomberg has made a central part of his work since leaving the mayor’s office.

Still, Bloomberg’s aid for Republicans has left some Pennsylvania Democrats with a bitter taste.

“I don’t think there’s any flavor for him here,” said Philadelphia party chair Bob Brady, an ally of former Vice President Joe Biden. “He’s for Republicans. We’re not for Toomey, naturally.”

Bloomberg, who has long cast himself as a centrist who can appeal to a wide swath of moderates in both parties, was in Arkansas on Tuesday to file paperwork to ensure he gets on the primary ballot there.

Biden Gets Backing From Organizing And Minority

WASHINGTON Following a week of endorsements from his one-time opponents as well as former President Barack Obama, Joe Biden is racking up more support from key Democratic mobilization groups.

Since becoming the apparent nominee, Biden has been accumulating more support from a variety of Democratic groups, including Let America Vote , which endorsed him Thursday.

Another group that endorsed Biden Thursday, End Citizens United had gone after Biden during the primary when the former vice president signaled he wouldnt disown a super PAC, namely the Unite the Country PAC, from supporting his campaign. While Biden was the first 2020 Democratic candidate to not say no to help from an outside organization, many of his rivals would eventually also tacitly agree to PAC support.

ECU and LAV President Tiffany Muller said the groups are throwing their support behind Biden now because hell work to get big money out of our politics and more Americans participating in our democracy.

Biden responded to the endorsements with saying hell work with the groups to reform the campaign finance and electoral systems.

Our Constitution doesnt begin with the phrase, We the Democrats or We the Republicans. And it certainly doesnt begin with the phrase, We the Donors. It begins with We the People. Today, our campaign finance and electoral systems are broken. Im excited to work with End Citizens United and Let America Vote to fix this once and for all, Biden said.

As of 2019, Bloomberg has given more than $3.3 billion to Johns Hopkins University, his alma mater, making him “the most generous living donor to any education institution in the United States.” His first contribution, in 1965, had been $5. He made his first $1 million commitment to JHU in 1984, and subsequently became the first individual to exceed $1 billion in lifetime donations to a single U.S. institution of higher education.

Nato Says No Sign Yet Of Russian Pullback

NATO has yet to see any signs of a reduced Russian presence on its border with Ukraine, Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told reporters in Brussels, although he said Moscows announcement offered reason for cautious optimism.

So far we havent seen any sign of de-escalation on the ground, he said. Everything is in place for a new attack. Russia still has time to step back from the brink.

Russia Moves Dont Suggest Force Posture Change Rusi Says

Judging by units the Russian defense ministry has shown as withdrawing, its doubtful a meaningful de-escalation has begun, according to Samuel Cranny-Evans, a military analyst at the Royal United Services Institute in London. The units were from two motor rifle brigades that were stationed in the southern part of Crimea, Russias Interfax news agency reported.

It does not really change Russian force posture at all, Cranny-Evans said, because they were positioned too far from the provisional border. At the same time, he noted that open source videos purport to show tanks from the 1st Guards Tank Army driving at night close to the Ukrainian border, which would send a very different signal.

Not only is driving tanks at night risky and certain to tear up roads, so generally not done lightly, but if open source identifications are correct the 1st Guards are a spearhead division, according to Cranny-Evans. If that kind of unit were withdrawn from that kind of location, it would be a much more definitive indication of de-escalation.

Mike Bloomberg Pledges $60 Million To Help House Democrats

Democratic candidates hammer Mike Bloomberg at Nevada debate

Former New York mayor Mike Bloomberg plans to spend $60 million to strengthen the Democratic House majority in November, roughly matching the money he invested in flipping control of the House in 2018, according to a Bloomberg adviser familiar with the plans.

The spending will include digital and television ads to defend some of the 20 freshman Democrats he helped win in 2018, along withspending aimed at defeating additional Republican incumbents.

The effort will include new money to several groups, including a revival of Bloombergs own political vehicle, Independence USA, and donations to the House Majority PAC, a group closely associated with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi , said the Bloomberg adviser, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the internal planning.

Mikes view is that the investments he made last time are some of the best investments he has ever made, the adviser said Monday about the House races. We are going to be looking at the same kinds of places, which is to say suburban, swing districts. There will be some overlap with presidential contest states.

Pelosi issued a statement on Monday welcoming Bloombergs continued support of House Democrats.

Mike Bloomberg played a role that was pivotal to our success two years ago, Pelosi said in a statement. We are so glad that he is staying in the fight to protect and expand the Democratic majority in the House.
