How Not To Disagree: The Bumper Sticker Mentality

Like a hypervigilant crossing guard in front of an inattentive driver, the black letters jumped out at me from the white sign on the side of a country road. As often Id seen similar biblical signs posted at the ends of lanes leading to Amish farms near my home in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, the whole idea was still perplexing to me, especially having grown up in the comparatively irreligious region of New England. How nice, I thought, theyre trying to make everyone passing by- including complete strangers- feel guilty, without allowing a response or conversation. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that this type of behavior is not a peculiarity of the Amish- many who choose to partake in all of the conveniences of the 21st century are no different.
This type of one-sided opinion-offering is widespread in our society and results from what I like to call a bumper sticker mentality. This is basically what it looks like, regardless of its various forms:
Person A: Heres my opinion. You didnt want it or ask for it, and theres no way Im giving you a chance to respond.
Person B: Huh?
Its easy to put an opinion out there like that when the chances are a million to one that meaningful conversation with someone who saw your opinion will ever occur. It makes me wonder why its so important that I need to know what you think about welfare or feminism or the war in Iraq if I dont even know you.
A Little Vulgarity Never Hurt Anyone
So, I love it when people have a vulgar sense of humor, I really do. However, forcing anyone who drives behind this car into an awkward conversation with their kids is pretty messed up. Just imagine how many kids asked why Jesus was running around grabbing pu*sies and what this Putin thing that the president is sucking on is. Not exactly the kind of conversation I want to be having with my kids while Im driving them to school.

Republican Bumper Stickers Denounced
Human rights advocates and Democrats are outraged by a locally produced Republican bumper sticker that compares presidential hopeful John Kerry and Sen. Edward Kennedy to the Ku Klux Klan.
Kennedy & Kerry The KK Klan! stickers were handed out at the Kootenai County Republican booth during the North Idaho Fair last month.
Thats nasty, said Marshall Mend, a founding member of the Kootenai County Task Force on Human Rights. I think its very detrimental to Idaho, detrimental to America and detrimental to Republicans. We dont need that kind of stuff from either side.
Mend is a Republican, which he said surprises many people because he also is a human-rights advocate.
Other local Republicans say they know of no one who took offense at the stickers and that its just typical political speech in a hot election year. They add that the Democrats have stickers and buttons criticizing President Bush.
Former Kootenai County Republican Central Committee Chairman Bob Nonini said he spent 40 hours at the booth during the five-day fair and never heard a negative comment about the stickers.
We had a real positive response, he said. People were laughing and wanting to take them.
Nonini said he may be naïve but never drew a connection to the Ku Klux Klan.
Mend and local Democrats said there is no other way to interpret the message.
God, what an evil statement, said Ron Johnson of the local Democratic central committee. Its inappropriate.

You know theres something wrong with you when your car looks like a teenage girls bedroom walls during her boyband phase.
