– As President Donald Trump seeks to discredit last weeks election with baseless claims of voter fraud, his team has bombarded his supporters with requests for money to help pay for legal challenges to the results: The Left will try to STEAL this election! reads one text.
But any small-dollar donations from Trumps grassroots donors wont be going to legal expenses at all, according to a Reuters review of the legal language in the solicitations.
A donor would have to give more than $8,000 before any money goes to the recount account established to finance election challenges, including recounts and lawsuits over alleged improprieties, the fundraising disclosures show.
The emailed solicitations send supporters to an Official Election Defense Fund website that asks them to sign up for recurring donations to protect the results and keep fighting even after Election Day.
The fine print makes clear most of the money will go to other priorities.
A large portion of the money goes to Save America, a Trump leadership PAC, or political action committee, set up on Monday, and the Republican National Committee . Under Federal Election Commission rules, both groups have broad leeway in how they can use the funds.
The Trump campaign, the RNC and Trumps new Save America PAC did not respond to requests for comment.

Eight fossil fuel executives tapped for a White House task force advising President Donald Trump on how to reopen the U.S. economy amid the COVID-19 pandemic have donated millions to Trump and other Republican campaigns and political committees in recent years.
Earlier this month, the White House named nearly 200 corporate executives and business leaders to its so-called Great American Economic Revival Industry Groups which Trump has called the Opening the Country council in 17 separate areas ranging from agriculture and banking to sports and thought leaders.
These bipartisan groups of American leaders will work together with the White House to chart the path forward toward a future of unparalleled American prosperity, Trump said in a statement accompanying the April 14 announcement. The 12-member energy panel includes eight oil and gas executives who have collectively made more than $4.2 million in political contributions since Trump launched his presidential bid in June 2015, according to an analysis from the watchdog group Documented. If you talk about off-duty police officers in polling places, about problems at the polls in Democratic areas, that could deter turnout, said Rick Hasen, a legal scholar who writes the Election Law Blog.

There was no such task force in existence it was the fictionalised creation of the Republican National Committee . Top conservative strategists built it from scratch, inventing a private vigilante squad of 200 off-duty police officers and private security guards.
