Will Younger Running Backs Make Sony Michel Expendable

Sony Michel is a good running back. Hes also healthy. It makes sense to keep him around especially when you consider that Damien Harris has dealt with injuries in both of his first two NFL seasons. That being said, the Pats have a lot of depth at running back. Rookie Rhamondre Stevenson starred against Philadelphia, rushing for 127 yards and two touchdowns. Second-year player J.J. Taylor rushed for only 10 yards, but had five receptions for 31 yards.

Training camp observations:Trent Brown thinks Mac Jones can be special

Would the Patriots feel comfortable going into the year with Harris, James White, Taylor and Stevenson? Thats not bad depth. Were not saying they should cut Michel, but if they want to give the younger backs more playing time, they could look to trade Michel. A strong performance from Stevenson and/or Taylor in Philly could push them in that direction.

How Is The Tight End Depth Looking

The Patriots have better tight end depth this season than theyve had in years. The issue right now is the overall depth. Hunter Henry is currently working his way back from a shoulder injury. It would be a surprise to see him play on Thursday. Jonnu Smith suffered an ankle injury on Sunday. It doesnt make sense to see him play in Philly, either. Then on Monday, Matt LaCosse left practice after a devastating hit from Derek Barnett. On Tuesday, the team released Troy Fumagalli.

That leaves the Patriots with Devin Asiasi as the only healthy tight end on the roster. This is a great chance for Asiasi to show everyone why the Patriots drafted him in the third round in 2020.

Eagles vs. Patriots preseason 2018: Game time, TV schedule ...

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts throws during a preseason NFL football game against the … Pittsburgh Steelers Thursday, Aug. 12, 2021, in Philadelphia.

ASSOCIATED PRESS

The Patriots came down to the City of Brotherly Love to hold a handful of joint practices with the Eagles leading up to their Thursday night preseason game. While these teams are now more familiar with one another, the on-field action projects to be gritty. There is no shortage of bad blood between these organizations or their fan bases after splitting a pair of Super Bowl meetings within the last 15 years.

Even teammates will be duking it out tonight, albeit not directly. Both squads still have plenty of work left to do sorting out their depth charts following a slew of new additions this offseason.

One key positional battle to watch will be the one for New Englands No. 1 quarterback gig. Head coach Bill Belichick has yet to officially reward Cam Newton, the incumbent starter, with the job. This has left the door open for Mac Jones, the No. 15 overall pick in the draft, to potentially usurp the veteran before Week 1 of the 2021 NFL season kicks off.

Dillard, a first-round pick in 2019, has the pedigree but has struggled with injuries, giving the 68, 346-pound Mailata a real shot at overcoming his seventh-round draft status and becoming a starter in Year 3. Whoever performs better tonight will likely gain a big leg up in their quest to become Philadelphias starting left tackle in 2021.

Eagles: New Coach New Ideas

Philadelphia hopes to muster a title run with new head coach Nick Sirianni and second-year quarterback Jalen Hurts. The new coach has yet to state that Hurt will be the number one QB publicly, but he has started in the first preseason game, completing seven throws for 54 yards. Not great numbers, but the QB had a fantastic 34-yard pass completion.

Patriots Vs Eagles Matchup Preview

Things are drastically different for both the Patriots and Eagles from when they met in Super Bowl LII in 2017. The Patriots no longer have the GOAT Tom Brady and the Eagles have seen the departure of both their Super Bowl-winning quarterback Nick Foles and head coach Doug Pederson, as well as the oft-injured potential franchise quarterback Carson Wentz. After down years in 2020 that saw each team miss the playoffs , they are hoping to bounce back in 2021.

While the Patriots have said goodbye to Brady, they still have arguably the greatest coach in NFL history, Bill Belichick, so you can never count them out. Still, the biggest storyline for the Patriots is the quarterback battle between incumbent starter and former MVP Cam Newton and the rookie Mac Jones. In the Patriots first preseason game, both Newton and Jones had respectable, if not overly flashy, outings. Either way, the Patriots are no longer the proverbial favorites in the AFC East, as the Buffalo Bills are the defending division champs and will be most pundits pick to do so again.

Like all preseason games, it will be more about evaluation than actual results, but both the Patriots and Eagles have plenty to keep an eye on in this one.

The ‘that’s What It’ll Look Like If Hurts Goes Down’ Award : Joe Flacco

Flacco has had a nice NFL career, and as the telecast showed, he’s 19th all time in passing yards. Flacco > Joe Montana, obviously.

Gregg Rosenthal

Buuuuut, from a pure aesthetic perspective, if Hurts goes down this season, you better have another Sunday afternoon hobby lined up because the Eagles under Flacco are going to be unwatchable.

Rhamondre Stevenson Has Another Big Run

New England Patriots vs Philadelphia Eagles: Preseason Week 2: Live NFL Game

In the Patriots preseason opener, Rhamondre Stevenson made a big play, taking it to the house on a 91-yard touchdown run. Stevenson was a stud running back in college and he flashed his abilities in the Patriots first preseason game. New England is known to utilize a committee approach in the backfield, which gives Stevenson a real opportunity to earn a role on the offense. Look for Rhamondre Stevenson to make some noise against the Eagles, as he should receive a good chunk of work.

Will Newton Or Jones Take Control Of The Qb Race

Cam Newton said this week that Belichick hasnt told him if hed be the Week 1 starter. That was an interesting answer considering Belichick has said multiple times this offseason that Newton is his starter. Will either Newton or Mac Jones take charge on Thursday night against the Eagles?

QBs in camp:Cam Newton praises Mac Jones’ work ethic

If Jones is going to start the opener, expect to see him get increased reps against the New York Giants in the final preseason game. If its still this close, however, it wouldnt surprise us if Newton is still the guy.

Matt Judon Is A Force

Simply put, Judon has been all over the place for the Patriots defense this summer and he made another immediate impact against the Eagles, getting in on the botched snap that helped Jalen Mills recover the fumble for New England, then getting another pressure two possessions later that forced a punt. Judon’s energy and physical play on the edge figures to be a huge part of the Patriots defense this season after he arrived signing a four-year deal this summer.

As a whole, the first-team defense forced a fumble and two straight punts before the team began to rotate in more players, but the performance did come against Joe Flacco and not Jalen Hurts, who was a thorn in their side during joint practices.

And again, pitching a shutout is something everyone on defense can feel pretty good about.

The ‘uh Oh’ Award : Travis Fulgham

Fulgham didn’t play until the second half, alongside other roster bubble receivers like J.J. Arcega-Whiteside and John Hightower. Fulgham has not had a good camp, and he made our “stock down” list on Wednesday. It’s interesting that he has gone from starter to mop-up duty in the second preseason game. He may not be a lock to make the roster.

Three awards to go. Gotta dig deep.

Cam Newton And Mac Jones Both Play Well

Eagles vs. Patriots Highlights | NFL 2018 Preseason Week 2

Cam Newton and Mac Jones have both been impressive so far this offseason. Newton seems comfortable under center and determined to have a bounce-back year. Meanwhile, Jones has played above expectations as he prepares to become the starting quarterback one day. This has been a tight race throughout and the second preseason game might make the decision even more difficult for the coaching staff.

So whatever happens on these practice fields stays here. We’re able to do a little bit more than what we do in a preseason game at this particular point because not all 32 teams get to see it.

New England And Philadelphia Will Kick Off Week 2 Of The Preseason

You don’t have to look too far back in the history books to find the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles duking it out with a Lombardi Trophy on the line. While Super Bowl LII may have only been a few years ago, a lot has changed with these two franchises since that fateful night in Minneapolis as one club has a new head coach and both teams are trotting out different quarterbacks. Sure, tonight’s opener of Week 2 of the preseason is merely an exhibition, but each team is looking to reset its foundation to hopefully find itself back in the big game in the not too distant future.

For Philadelphia, it hopes to be able to rekindle a championship run with new head coach Nick Sirianni and second-year quarterback Jalen Hurts leading the way. In New England, Bill Belichick is still steering the ship, but it remains to be seen if it’ll be Cam Newton or first-round rookie Mac Jones working as his co-pilot as QB1.

There are still plenty of questions with both of these teams and tonight’s preseason head to head may get us one step closer toward getting some pivotal answers. Here’s how you can catch all the action unfold in real time.
