Farm Show Corn Head Equipment Demos Put Spotlight On Harvesting Down Lodged Corn

BOONE, Iowa — Corn head manufacturers demonstrated their products can harvest down, lodged and tangled corn — at times with relative ease — during a recent farm show here.

Representatives of Dragotec USA, Calmer Corn Heads and MacDon say their companies stand ready to help Midwest farmers affected by last month’s violent derecho. The USDA Risk Management Agency estimates about 14 million acres of crops from South Dakota and Nebraska to Ohio sustained varying degrees of damage from hurricane-force winds.

The middle one-third of Iowa was the hardest hit. Winds topping 140 mph fully or partially blew down an estimated 3.5 million acres of corn in the state, according to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship. This included 400 acres of corn used for equipment demonstrations at the show.

“Our hearts go out to all farmers affected by the storm,” said Aaron Siefken, Dragotec USA marketing manager. “Every farmer will eventually deal with at least one year of down corn. It’s not a matter of if, but when.

“I know it’s something farmers don’t want to do, but it has to get done,” he added.

Harvesting severely lodged and twisted corn can be a difficult, slow process. Combine operators often need to drastically reduce speed and harvest one way. Industry and Iowa State University experts say the right equipment and head adjustments can make the task easier.

Combine Gathering Attachments For Lodged Corn

Wind damage or stalk rots can cause lodged corn that is difficult to gather with standard corn harvesting equipment. Powered attachments for corn heads are available to assist the gathering process and reduce the number of missed stalks and ears. These attachments assist the flow of corn stalks up and over the snouts and into the gathering chains and cross augers. While required travel speed may still be significantly reduced from normal, these attachments can greatly reduce head plugging and field gathering losses. This article will discuss several combine head attachments to assist in gathering lodged corn and has resources for finding these attachments.
