The Platoon Splits Up

Although Platoon Leader First Lieutenant David Uthlaut strongly disagreed, Major David Hodne decided from a distant place to order the platoon to split up. One group was directed to drag the broken Hummer back to a road using an old truck hired from an Afghan while the other was to continue on to Manah. Manah was the location on Hodnes mission checklist where he wanted to have boots on the ground by dusk . This action didnt just split the platoon in two but also separated the brothers Kevin staying with the broken Hummer, Pat heading for Manah.

Under orders from Major Hodne to split the platoon into sections called Serials, Uthlaut was given no choice and did his best to divide the men and weapons as carefully as possible given time constraints. This left team leaders in charge of men they did not normally work with. Considering the ad hoc nature of the op, Uthlaut did as well as he possibly could. And up on the ridge, the guerillas watched as the Americans broke off into Serials.

Spirit Of Innovation: Eaglewerx Celebrates Opening With Dedication Ceremony At Fort Campbell

The 101st Airborne Division has been a leader in Army innovation for decades, and the Spec. 4 Peter M. Guenette EagleWerx Applied Tactical Innovation Center promises to play a major role in future warfighter transformation.

Soldiers, Families and community members toured the facility firsthand Dec. 7 during a ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony at 89 Screaming Eagle Blvd., where they learned about EagleWerxs capabilities and bottom-up approach to innovation.

We all know that transformation starts with the people who are executing, and the Soldiers are the ones closest to the problem, said Capt. Lauren Hansen-Armendariz, deputy innovation officer, 101st Abn. Div. They understand it the best, and thats exactly why EagleWerx exists to be able to give Soldiers what they need so they can make improvements.

EagleWerx gives Soldiers direct access to a wide range of capabilities including entry-level artificial intelligence, robotics equipment, 3D printing, engineering support and educational workshops to solve problems. Its employees can also connect Soldiers with collaborative partners such as Vanderbilt University, Middle Tennessee State University and U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command, or CCDC.

Major General JP McGee, commanding general, 101st Airborne Division and Fort Campbell, said EagleWerx is an important step forward for the installation because it empowers Soldiers to adapt and excel in future conflicts.

    The Split In The Wadi

There was a split in the wadi, at which point the Manah-bound serial, including Pat Tillman, was to head left and into a canyon. The serial with the broken Hummer would veer right, up a steep hillside, and hopefully arrive at a road where they would meet up with better transport. The Manah serial was several minutes ahead of the Broken Hummer serial, and when the men with the worthless vehicle discovered that their route was entirely impassable, they had no choice but to turn around and follow the same route the Manah serial had. It was at this point that Platoon Sergeant Eric Godec, in charge of the Broken Hummer serial, discovered theyd lost radio contact with the Manah serial.

And so the Broken Hummer serial was forced to head into the canyon several minutes after the Manah serial already had done so themselves. The men were being thrown around by the rough, boulder-strewn and deeply rutted path, and everything that could go wrong that day, had. This was when one of the guerillas, who had an RPG, shouldered his weapon and fired on the split-off section of the Black Sheep platoon.

    What Is The Patriot Challenge

The Patriot Challenge started in 2012 was spawned by Army Ranger Cory Smith. Smith trekked from Fort Benning, Georgia, to his hometown of Indianapolis, Indiana, to raise awareness of the issues surrounding the transition that military veterans face when transitioning from public service into civilian life. He was greeted with cheers of Run Ranger Run during his journey.

This nationwide event uses the number 565 to signify the distance that Smith traveled from Georgia to Indiana. This event is a way to connect Americans with the veteran community. Unfortunately, many veterans have problems entering civilian society after their duty has been completed this is a great way to show thanks to the military community while getting in better shape.

Ii: Family Life For A Military Spouse

Managing a family while your Soldier, Airman, Sailor, or Marine is deployed can be a challenge. PCSing every few years is always a life-changing event. With all of the goodbyes and see you laters, military life for everyone is stressful. We interviewed a few military spouses who have experienced that and provided great advice for others new to the lifestyle. Theyve discovered creative ways to keep their families focused and resilient while staying connected with their heroes.

We elected to structure this post in more of an informal Q& A session, in the hopes to maintain the personal reflection that these women provided.

For your reference, the interviewer is Katie Dyer and the interviewees are Amanda Collier , Amanda Olson , and Tonya Miller

KD: What were some of the ways you kept your children busy while your spouse was away on deployments and training exercises?

AO: Lots of time was spent in the pools at Fort Benning & roaming around Europe when stationed in Germany. Make Friends, keep a schedule and, talk to your spouse whenever possible, is the best advice I can offer.

TM:My daughter is currently 4 and weve been lucky enough to not have any deployments yet although he was scheduled for one this year but the current pandemic is postponing the deployment. When my husband had week long TDYs in the past, My daughter and I like to continue with our daily routines and at night we will skype or call my husband.
