Abbott Major Pacs Provide $1m+ In Late Train Contributions

Runoff candidates who receive more than $1,890 from a single source on or after May 15 must disclose those contributions in daily pre-election reports . These late train contributions typically come from a handful of major donors and go to establishment candidates, at least on the Republican side. This year was no exception.
Gov. Greg Abbott , Rep. Mayes Middleton , Associated Republicans of Texas PAC, Texans for Lawsuit Reform PAC and the Texas Assoc. of Realtors TREPAC combined have contributed over $1M to runoff candidates since May 15.
AG : Challenger George P. Bush reported an additional $209K in four daily reports, including contributions from Dallas energy executive Kelcy Warren , former President George W. Bush , Glen Rose rancher Bobby Hill , Houston investor Steven Webster , Midland executive Tripp Womack , Little Rock retiree William Carlton and Houston investor Charles Tate . Atty. Gen. Ken Paxton reported an additional $39K in two daily reports, including $26K from Gilmer-based David L. Stevenson LLC.
SD24 open : Former Sen. Pete Flores reported an additional $100K in three daily reports, including contributions from Lt. Gov. Dan Patricks campaign , Houston executive John Nau and Dallas executive Ross Perot Jr. . Raul Reyes Jr. has not reported additional contributions.

The political influence of the National Rifle Association is once again in the spotlight in the wake of the mass shooting at the elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.
The shooting reignited the debate regarding gun control laws in the U.S. after a gunman killed 19 children and two adults at the Robb Elementary School on Tuesday.
While several Republicans tweeted after the shooting that they are offering their thoughts and prayers to the victims, others have pointed out that there are a number of GOP senators who have received millions of dollars of donations from the NRA over the years.

According to data compiled by the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence in 2019, about two dozen sitting Republican senators have received contributions from the NRA. Of those senators, 16 have received more than $1 million.
Topping the list is Utah Senator Mitt Romney, who received more than $13 million in NRA contributions. The NRA money donated to Romney, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee, was raised by a number of social media users after Romney tweeted his condolences in the wake of the Uvalde mass shooting.
“Grief overwhelms the soul. Children slaughtered. Lives extinguished. Parents’ hearts wrenched. Incomprehensible,” Romney wrote. “I offer prayer and condolence but know that it is grossly inadequate. We must find answers.”

Southlake: A Viral Video A Diversity Plan And An Election That Changed An Affluent Texas Town
The Southlake election results drew national attention, including on Fox News and other conservative outlets, and marked one of the first and most high-profile victories for candidates running on a platform opposing critical race theory. A year later, the political strategy dubbed the Southlake playbook by activists and political observers has spread to school board races across the state.
New political action committees have formed in communities all over Texas, many with names seemingly paying homage to Southlake Families: Theres Lake Travis Families PAC outside Austin, Spring Branch Families PAC in the suburbs of Houston and HP Families PAC in Highland Park, a wealthy Dallas suburb.
Its startling, the amount of money and political organizing thats moving into local elections right now, said Deen, the political science professor, noting that at least 10 local PACs have been established in the Dallas-Fort Worth region alone in the past year.
Many of these groups have raised tens of thousands of dollars to back conservative school board candidates and causes. Some describe themselves as nonpartisan, with an emphasis on supporting parents rights to have a say in their childrens education, while at the same time advocating for causes that are popular among Republican voters.
Patriot Mobile Action leaders did not respond to messages requesting an interview.
Several school board members said theyre worried about the way these changes could impact schools.

The intense partisan focus on these races has also led to harsh personal attacks and animosity not typically seen in small-town elections, according to review of social media posts and interviews with a dozen candidates.
Bonnie Anderson, a Katy school board candidate who made national headlines last year for her attempts to ban the graphic novels New Kid and Class Act by Jerry Craft, has repeatedly accused another candidate, Eliz Markowitz, of being a predator. Markowitz, the only openly gay candidate seeking a board seat in Katy, has spoken against attempts to ban books featuring LGBTQ characters and storylines.
God knows your sinister agenda in trying to get a seat on a school board when you have no children, Anderson wrote to Markowitz in a recent Facebook comment.
Its exhausting to know that people are purposely slandering your name in a community where youve simply tried to do whats right for everyone for so long, said Markowitz, who unsuccessfully ran for the state board of education in 2018. Hopefully Ill be judged by the quality of my character.
Anderson didnt respond to a phone message requesting comment.

Texas Republicans Lead Record Voter Turnout In 2022 Elections Particularly In South Texas
In last Tuesdays Primary Elections, Texas saw record voter turnout overall and post-election analysis reflects that participation significantly increased because of Republican voters. Greater GOP voter participation in South and Southwest Texas counties were especially critical in breaking previous turnout records.
Statewide turnout was 17.4% of registered voters, the highest combined turnout for a gubernatorial primary election since 1994. While turnout in a gubernatorial election is typically lower than a presidential year, almost as many voters participated in this years Republican primary as in 2020 and nearly 400,000 more votes were cast this year than in the last gubernatorial year .
Ahead of this years primary elections, Republicans made considerable investments in candidates in South and Southwest Texas where progressive Democrats have alienated resident interests. The results of this election make it clear that those dollars and resources were wisely invested as turnout more than doubled in 31 counties across the state, mostly in South and West Texas. In Starr County, for example, 15 voters participated in the 2018 Republican Primary. On Tuesday, the county counted 1,773 votes, which is an 11,217% increase from four years ago.

AUSTIN Republican voters mostly valued pragmatism and experience, especially in down-ballot races, after theyd validated their Trumpy ticket topper, Attorney General Ken Paxton.
Democrats culled some higher-risk unknowns from their statewide slate and loosened clenched jaws after it became clear Rochelle Garza will face Paxton this fall, and there wont be three white males at the top of their ticket.
As the dust from Tuesdays runoff election settles, there were two other, highly nuanced takeaways: The states GOP establishment protected incumbents, even if a few hard-right insurgents captured open Texas House seats. Also, voter turnout, while minuscule, underscored how Republicans still sport advantages.
Still, the resurgence of the gun-control debate after Tuesdays school-shooting horror in Uvalde and the risk that legal abortion could be a thing of the past in Texas may force GOP candidates to tread gingerly, experts said. That doesnt remove the hurdles state Democrats face, though, as attention turns to the Nov. 8 election.
Democrats are trying to turn their sails to harness an issue landscape that rallies their base and nets them crossover votes against the headwinds of a generally lousy year considering an unpopular president and a sour economy, University of Houston political scientist Brandon Rottinghaus said.

As runoff elections go, it was a pretty good night to be an incumbent, or a former incumbent. Atty. Gen. Ken Paxton and Railroad Comm. Wayne Christian easily turned aside their challengers to secure nominations for a third and second term, respectively. Paxton routed Land Comm. George P. Bush , 68%-32%, and Christian turned away Sarah Stogner , 65%-35%.
Bush won only five counties, three of which had 50 or fewer voters. Bush carried Kenedy Co., five votes to one Loving Co., five votes to two Sterling Co., 29 votes to 21 Starr Co., 181 votes to 146 and Travis Co., 53%-47%. Paxton carried the other 249 counties. Paxton will face Rochelle Garza , who prevailed over Joe Jaworski , 63%-37%.
In the LAND open runoffs, Sen. Dawn Buckingham defeated Tim Westley, 69%-31%. She will face Jay Kleberg , who defeated Sandragrace Martinez, 53%-47%, in the closest statewide race of the day. Mike Collier defeated Rep. Michelle Beckley , 55%-45%, to win a second straight nomination for LTGOV . Janet Dudding defeated Ángel Luis Vega, 61%-39%, to win the nomination for COMP .
Three of the four legislative incumbents forced into runoffs prevailed, bucking recent history. Prior to tonight , just one incumbent in the last 26 years won a runoff after finishing first in the primary by fewer than 10 percentage points over the second-place candidate. All three victorious incumbents did it this year.
% Runoff Turnout Among Highest Since Poll Tax Era Ended

Just over 1.4M Texans 8.1% of registered voters cast ballots in the primary runoff election, according to unofficial results reported by the Secretary of States office.
Republican voters nearly out-numbered Democratic voters 2-to-1. A total of 927K votes were cast in the Republican AG runoff, the most of any statewide race, and 484K votes were cast in the Democratic AG runoff, the office with the most votes in that primary.
There have been 11 instances in state history when both parties have had statewide offices on the runoff ballot. Combined runoff turnout, measured as number of votes cast, was the second highest for a combined statewide runoff:

Texans support PUBLIC dollars going to PUBLIC schools Oppose vouchers and charters receiving tax dollars
Austin, TX According to a recent Change Research poll, 53% of likely Texas voters are against taxpayer-funded private school vouchers when hearing vouchers mean less money for their local public schools. Additionally, 92% of voucher opponents report being highly enthusiastic to vote in November, compared to 86% of voucher proponents.
Further, a majority of Texans are concerned charter schools take money from local public schools and that charter school teachers do not need to be certified to teach . These results are consistent with the nonpartisan 2021 Raise Your Hand Foundation Poll, which found that 53 percent oppose establishing or adding charter schools in their community if it means reducing the amount of funds distributed to their local schools.
