Miami Dolphins At New England Patriots

Don't Miss

Injury Concerns Entering Playoffs

Dolphins vs. Patriots Week 1 Highlights | NFL 2021

Starting left tackle Isaiah Wynn and rookie running back Rhamondre Stevenson both left the game in the first half due to injuries. Wynn never returned to the game. Stevenson did return.

Wynn’s injury could leave the Patriots shorthanded at a critical position during Wild Card Weekend, while Stevenson not being at full strength would put more pressure on Damien Harris and veteran Brandon Bolden. Harris was questionable on the Week 18 injury report and had only 11 carries against the Dolphins.

The Patriots also were without two important defensive players Sunday. Veteran linebacker Dont’a Hightower was unavailable because of a knee injury. Second-year safety Kyle Dugger, who ranked second on the team in total tackles, didn’t play due to a hand injury. Dugger also missed practice on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Christian Barmore was shaken up in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter Sunday. He’s been on the injury report numerous times this season. The rookie defensive tackle has been a critical component of the team’s defense.

New England has done a pretty good job plugging holes caused by injuries to key players, but these are five key players. If any of them are less-than-100 percent or can’t play next weekend, it would make the Patriots’ already tough challenge of winning their Wild Card playoff game even more difficult.

New England Patriots Vs Miami Dolphins Prediction And Preview

Playoff-bound Patriots can clinch AFC East title with win and Bills loss

The New England Patriots will be marching right back into the playoffs after a one-year hiatus in 2020, and they still have a chance to accomplish yet another familiar feat: win the AFC East. In order to do so, they’ll have to take down the Miami Dolphins, whose own playoff hopes were dashed last week but who have grown accustomed to playing “spoiler” during the Patriots’ trips down south in the later stages of the regular season.

Miami’s dismal 34-3 loss at Tennessee last week brought to an end not only the team’s chances at a trip to the postseason but also a historic streak that saw the Dolphins bounce back from a seven-game losing streak with seven straight wins. No NFL team had ever followed seven straight losses with seven straight wins before Miami did so this season, but not even the remarkable turnaround was enough to save the Dolphins after the miserable start.

Why The Dolphins Won

The Dolphins had an impressive opening drive where Tua Tagovailoa and the offense marched 77 yards down the field to quickly take the lead. The quarterback completed all seven of his passes on the drive for 54 yards, which included a 7-yard touchdown pass to Jaylen Waddle in the left corner of the end zone where the rookie receiver was able to sneak behind the New England secondary. That opening touchdown drive and the pick-six by Xavien Howard allowed Miami to play with a lead throughout the day and their success running the football kept the ball out of the Patriots hands to further prevent a possible comeback. While that final fumble recovery as time expired was inconsequential to the outcome, the Dolphins did score 16 points off turnovers . That’s enough to put you in the driver’s seat in any game.

New England Patriots: 4 Bold Predictions For Week 18 Vs Dolphins

The New England Patriots Week 18 matchup against the Miami Dolphins leaves us in a similar situation. The Patriots have locked up a playoff berth and travel to Miami to face the Dolphins to close out the regular season. This has typically been a situation where New England has struggled.

The Dolphins have won six of the last eight meetings down in Miami. Many of those times were late in the season, with the Patriots having clinched a playoff spot and the Dolphins were already eliminated. This year is going to be different, and I am going to tell you why.

Here are my 4 bold predictions for the New England Patriots at Miami Dolphins Week 18 matchup.

Sean Payton Won’t Be The Hc What About Tom Brady

New England Patriots vs Miami Dolphins Week 4 final injury ...

The plan with Payton has been scrapped after the Dolphins hired Mike McDaniel to be their new head coach, but as far as Brady is concerned the intention continues, however, it cannot move forward as, officially, the legendary quarterback has not put in his retirement papers to the NFL so he is still part of the Buccaneers roster.

Tampa Bay has not cut the seven-time Super Bowl champion, as doing so before June 2 would have a $32 million impact on the salary cap, as he still has a one-year contract in place with this organization, if he makes that move after the date mentioned above, that impact is spread over two seasons.

2. Which Dolphins make their impact felt entering the offseason? With sights no longer set on the playoffs and the focus instead shifting to the shuffle that is the offseason, there will be plenty of moving parts throughout the Dolphins’ roster. Key playmakers in the passing game like tight ends Mike Gesicki and Durham Smythe second and fourth on the team, respectively, in receiving are both pending free agents, as is backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett, author of the Dolphins’ Week 9 win over Houston that kicked off the seven-game winning streak.

On the defensive side of the ball, defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah could be playing his way to a new contract after joining Miami on a two-year deal in 2020. Ogbah leads the team with nine sacks and is tied for second on the team with 10 passes defended, the only lineman on the team with more than three. Ogbah was limited in practice earlier in the week with a quad injury but practiced fully on Thursday, so all signs point to him being able to suit up in the season finale.

The contributions of this group and many more throughout the season will lead to a host of critical decisions in the offseason, as Miami looks for its first postseason berth since the 2016 season and first playoff win since 2000.

Heading to Miami for the final week of the regular season, a defensive showing that resembles the six road wins more closely than the Week 15 loss at Indianapolis would be a strong positive boost entering the postseason.

The Dolphins Will Seek To Sweep The Series And Close The Season With Dignity

For Dolphins coach Brian Flores, there’s a bit of history waiting too, as there are 120 coaches who have faced Belichick in his 22 seasons with the Patriots. And of them, four, Dave Wannstedt, Mike Shanahan, Tom Coughlin and Tony Dungy, are the only ones in that span to have beaten Belichick three times in a row. Flores, a former Patriots assistant who spent 15 years on the team with three Super Bowl wins with Belichick, can join that group this afternoon.

The Miami Dolphins took down the New England Patriots 33-24 in Week 18 to secure their ninth win of the season and third place in the AFC East.

Despite losing seven straight games from Week 2 to Week 8, the Dolphins improved to 9-8 Sunday to secure their second straight winning season under head coach Brian Flores. New England finished 10-7 on the year and will now face either the Buffalo Bills or Cincinnati Bengals in the first round of the playoffs.

Three Things To Watch

Patriots vs. Dolphins Week 15 Highlights | NFL 2020

1. Can Miami’s defense rebound against an explosive New England offense?Heading into the Week 14 bye, New England had won seven in a row and had scored at least 24 points in all but two games since the start of October with one of the two exceptions a 14-10 Week 13 win on a Monday night in windy, snowy conditions. In other words, the Patriots’ offense had been clicking on all cylinders before the bye but followed the break with just 38 total points across losses to Indianapolis and Buffalo.

Last week, though, the Patriots welcomed in the new year with their second 50-point output of the season in the romp over the Jaguars. Four first-half touchdowns including two rushing scores by Damien Harris paved the way for a 28-3 lead before Rhamondre Stevenson notched two of his own and Kristian Wilkerson brought in his second touchdown pass of the game from Mac Jones.

The Dolphins, meanwhile, allowed 24 points just once during their seven-game winning streak after six of their seven previous losses came to teams eclipsing that mark. But their 34-3 loss at Tennessee last week brought many of the defense’s struggles to light once again, as quarterback Ryan Tannehill in his first game against his former team threw for two touchdowns while D’Onta Foreman and Dontrell Hilliard each found the end zone on the ground. If Miami is unable to bounce back from its struggles in Nashville, look for New England to have its way offensively on Sunday.

The Miami Dolphins were finally brought back to Earth last weekend, suffering a 34-3 thrashing at the hands of the Tennessee Titans. The loss knocked them out of playoff contention at 8-8, as it ended a seven-game winning streak that was turning into a turnaround the likes of which the NFL has never seen. Even with the loss, it was a terrific bounceback for the Dolphins, who were 1-7 earlier this season.

Their opponents on Sunday are the New England Patriots, a familiar face playing for a familiar place: First in the AFC East. The 10-6 Patriots are locked into the playoffs, but they can win the East with a win and a Bills loss to the Jets. However, theres not much use in postulating Patriots scenarios. They can end up anywhere from first in the AFC to seventh, depending on how things shake out. No playoff team will be scoreboard watching more than New England on Sunday, as they try to play themselves into a better spot.

The Dolphins, of course, have always been an issue for Bill Belichick. They tend to give the Pats issues, and Sunday would be a bad time for that. Losing throws a lot of things up in the air for New England, as they try to exert as much control as possible over their fate. Mac Jones has been exactly what the Patriots have needed him to be for most of the year, and that has to continue against an opportunistic Dolphins team with a surprising secondary.

The Dolphins End Their Season With A 9

The Miami Dolphins have ended their 2021 season on a high note, moving above .500 to 9-8 after taking down the New England Patriots on Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium, 33-24.

Miami began the day jumping out to a 17-0 lead — which included a pick-six by cornerback Xavien Howard — and were able to stay in front of New England for the entire game. That initial scoring run proved to be enough of a cushion for the Dolphins even as the Patriots began to claw back into the game. In the second half, New England did cut the lead to a field goal, but Miami was able to run down enough clock in the fourth quarter to make a comeback unattainable.

Tagovailoa finished his day completing 15 of his 22 passes for 109 yards and a touchdown. Meanwhile, the Dolphins ground game led by Duke Johnson was what truly moved the offense throughout the day. They totaled 195 yards as a team with Johnson accounting for 117 of those yards on a 4.7 yards per carry clip. On the Patriots side, Jones completed 20 of 30 passes for 261 yards, a touchdown and a pick. Brandon Bolden led the team in rushing and had two total touchdown on the day.

This loss did prove to be moot point in the Patriots, who had already clinched a playoff spot entering Week 18, hopes of winning the AFC East as the Buffalo Bills were able to beat the New York Jets at home. Why The Patriots Lost

Bill Belichick highlighted this week that the Patriots have come into games flat this season and this game was no exception. They were shutout in the first quarter and allowed the Dolphins to jump out to a 17-0 leading before they were able to get on the board. At one point, the Dolphins had 10 first downs already under their belt with the Patriots only registering eight plays on offense. Even as the defense started to force a pair of three and outs in the first half following that initial scoring blitz, complimentary football was nonexistent as the offense also punted the ball away following those stops.

Defensively, the Patriots had no answer for the Dolphins rushing attack as they put up 195 yards on 4.5 yards per carry as a team. 12 of Miami’s 23 first downs came via the ground game.

There was also uncharacteristic play by New England terms of penalties. On the day, they were flagged eight times for 78 yards. While some of those calls were questionable, an illegal formation penalty called on Lawrence Guy on a fourth-and-1 punt attempt by the Dolphins extended the Miami drive and ultimately led to the team adding a field goal to its lead.

Patriots Week 18 Predictions Vs Miami Dolphins

4. New England does not rest anyone

The Patriots have already locked up the playoff berth. The division title is not out of the question, but the Buffalo Bills play the New York Jets at the same time Sunday. If the Bills beat the Jets, Buffalo wins the AFC East. That led many to wonder if the Patriots might rest some starters, whether that is for the entire game or during the 2nd half.

For more insight on the Patriots Week 18 matchup against the Dolphins, listen below:

Thats not the Bill Belichick way. His philosophy has always been to play to win. If injuries happen, so be it. During the 2009-2010 season, during Week 17, that philosophy caught up with Belichick. The Patriots had the division locked up, but put everyone on the field against the Houston Texans. Pro Bowl wide receiver Wes Welker once tore his ACL and MCL, missing the rest of the year.

That has not deterred Belichick. He has stuck to this philosophy. Given his track record of playoff success, its hard to argue with.

3. Rhamondre Stevenson goes over 100 yards, 1+ touchdowns

Patriots running back Damien Harris is still dealing with a hamstring injury. He played last week, scoring twice vs the Jacksonville Jaguars, but only rushed nine times in the win.

Meanwhile, rookie tailback Rhamondre Stevenson has been blowing up lately. He rushed for 107 yards and two touchdowns against the Jaguars.

2. The Patriots defense shuts down Tua Tagovailoa

  • Miami Dolphins
  • New England Patriots

The New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins kick off their seasons Sunday at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, and the AFC East matchup will include two former Alabama standouts behind center.

While the pressure is on for Dolphins second-year quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who threw 11 passing touchdowns and five interceptions during his rookie season, first-round draft pick Mac Jones will be making his regular-season debut for the Patriots. The quarterback is getting the start following Cam Newton’s release at the conclusion of training camp.

It’s a big first game for two teams with playoff aspirations. The Dolphins narrowly missed the playoffs last season after going 10-6. The Patriots went 7-9 last year, missing the playoffs for the first time since the 2008 campaign and suffering a losing season for the first time since 2000.
