Review: Mossberg Patriot Rifle
By all accounts, the Patriot bolt-action has been selling extremely well since its formal introduction at the 2015 SHOT Show. On the surface, that success would seem to run counter to the industry-wide trends toward tactical styling and technological innovation. Instead, the Patriot looks like a classic from the 1960s and sticks with engineering prevalent to the affordable bolt-rifle category.
And that reflects the rifles unique origin. According to Mossberg press relations manager Linda Powell, The Patriot introduction did not go the more traditional route of an engineer bringing an idea to management or marketing research showing an interest in a particular category. We listened directly to our customers requests for a more traditional, wood-stocked hunting rifle.
Initial responses from our customers at last years shows told us that we had a home run, with the walnut Patriots and walnut/Vortex-scoped combos outselling other versions, said Powell.
Im hardly the first to remark on the Patriots classic lines, though theres no set definition for the term. The way it came together, said Powell, was that, the sales force brought the idea of an affordable, walnut, bolt-action hunting rifle with a classically styled stock, our engineering design team looked at many of the classics, their dimensions and overall appeal. From that, the Patriot was born.

Mossberg Patriot Vortex Combo
Mossberg has shown a desire to improve its product line by collaborating with the best professionals from Jerry Meculek to Shockwave Industries. Collaborating with Vortex to combine the Synthetic Patriot with a competent scope reduces the price and increases the effectiveness of the rifle. My favorite feature with this rifle is the fact that the scope is already mounted to the Weaver base and is ready to be zeroed right out of the box. The Vortex Crossfire II is a great scope for shorter ranges, such as shooting up to 300 yards . Either way, I wouldnt trust this scope at distances longer than 700 yards for sure.

Why Should I Buy The Mossberg Patriot Predator
The Patriot Predator is chambered in 4 different rounds, which gives it the versatility to match the affordability and comfort of the Synthetic model. Mossberg Patriot Predator 308 Review
The Mossberg Patriot Predator is a beefed-up version of the standard Mossberg Patriot Hunter.
It has an excellent Picantinny rail system which enables you to use the optics and scopes that you prefer and has larger bolt handles.
As the name suggests this is an apex predator and can take out any animal in North America barring bison and bears.
Using the .308 Winchester Magnum with the Predator means you have a cheap centrefire bolt-action rifle, but which is also an accurate rifle with widely available and effective rounds.
This means that you have a very reasonable budget set up, that you can pretty much hunt anywhere and hunt anything without changing a thing.
You can buy this rifle for under $400, meaning it provides excellent value for money for the above average accuracy. It is an excellent and affordable option for people with a limited budget.
Who should buy it
Anyone from a novice to elite level hunter could take this rifle on a hunt and bag a prize but lets be honest, due to the price point this is aimed squarely at the beginner hunter or a semi-regular hobbyist hunter, or a more experienced hunter who has a very limited budget.
If I were an experienced hunter with a very limited budget, I would be more inclined to try to find a second-hand rifle that is more advanced.
The Mossberg Patriot Predator will also suit someone who prefers their rifles to look like tactical rifles rather than the more tradition styles.

The Best Budget Hunting Rifle You Can Buy
I own two Mossberg Patriot rifles , which I will concentrate most of the article on but they are effectively the same gun so I will try not to repeat myself too much when taking a deeper dive on them.

Hunting With The Mossberg Patriot
I took the Patriot out deer hunting in the 2017 season and got a decent whitetail buck. At a massive distance of 25 yards, it wasnt like I really needed the long range 140 grain 6.5 Creedmoor bullets, but its nice to have the option to make a long shot if one presents itself. In use, the magazine kinda needs to be mashed into the well. It doesnt clip in super nicely, but it does clip in. Single feed rounds of 6.5 Creedmoor on top of the magazine didnt feed in super well maybe because of the sharp angles on 6.5 Creedmoor, or maybe because of the feedpath. Rounds fed from the magazine worked great.

In 1886 Oscar Frederick Mossberg left Sweden for the United States. Thirty-three years later, he and his sons founded a company that to this day remains in the family. The magazine can be loaded through the ejection port, and single cartridges can even be tossed into the ejection port, on top of an empty magazine, and then chambered by closing the bolt.
