Promotion To Justice Department

In 1986, President Reagan promoted Weld to head of the Criminal Division of the Justice Department in Washington, where Weld oversaw 700 employees. Weld was responsible for supervising all federal prosecutions, including those investigated by the FBI and the Drug Enforcement Administration, as well as the work of the 93 U.S. Attorneys . During this time, Weld worked on some of the Reagan administration’s most significant prosecutions and investigations, including the capture of Panama’s Manuel Noriega on drug trafficking charges.

In March 1988, Weld resigned from the Justice Department, together with United States Deputy Attorney GeneralArnold Burns and four aides, in protest of improper conduct by United States Attorney GeneralEdwin Meese. In July 1988, Weld and Burns jointly testified before Congress in favor of a potential prosecution of Edwin Meese for his personal financial conduct, following a report by a special prosecutor investigating Edwin Meese. Meese resigned from office in July 1988 shortly after Weld’s and Burns’s testimony.

From 1988 to 1990, Weld was a senior partner at Hale and Dorr.

Statehood And Indian Removal

Defense of Florida’s northern border with the United States was minor during the second Spanish period. The region became a haven for escaped slaves and a base for Indian attacks against U.S. territories, and the U.S. pressed Spain for reform.

Americans of and began moving into northern Florida from the backwoods of and . Though technically not allowed by the Spanish authorities and the Floridan government, they were never able to effectively police the border region and the backwoods settlers from the United States would continue to immigrate into Florida unchecked. These migrants, mixing with the already present British settlers who had remained in Florida since the British period, would be the progenitors of the population known as .

These American settlers established a permanent foothold in the area and ignored Spanish authorities. The British settlers who had remained also resented Spanish rule, leading to a rebellion in 1810 and the establishment for ninety days of the so-called Free and Independent Republic of on September 23. After meetings beginning in June, rebels overcame the garrison at , and unfurled the flag of the new republic: a single white star on a blue field. This flag would later become known as the “”.

Who Are The Republicans Challenging Donald Trump In The 2020 Primaries

Most incumbent presidents dont face much of a reelection challenge from members of their own party. The last time a major political figure challenged a sitting president from the same party was when the late Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy launched a primary run against Democratic President Jimmy Carter in 1980. Carter won the nomination again, but after the bruising party battle, he was trounced by Republican Ronald Reagan.

Reagan actually may have helped Carter get elected in the first place by running against incumbent Republican President Gerald Ford in 1976. Ford, who had taken office when Richard Nixon resigned, won that primary fight, but then lost to Carter in the general election. George H.W. Bush also faced a Republican challenge from political commentator Pat Buchanan in 1992, then later lost to Bill Clinton in the general election.

So far, no major political players in the Republican Party have announced a challenge to President Donald Trump, though that could change as the president faces an impeachment inquiry in the Democratic-led U.S. House.

Trump has drawn only three long-shot challengers so far. Who are they?

Florida Gov Ron Desantis

Dispatches from Iowa: The Republican Running Against Trump ...

DeSantis narrowly beat out Trump in a straw poll at the Western Conservative Summit in Denver last month, but his greatest strength could also prove to be his greatest weakness. Praised by Republicans as a next-generation Trump, it could put him on a collision course with Trump should both run.

DeSantis is up for reelection next year, and hes purposely avoided Iowa to not drive 2024 speculation, according to Politico. Still, hes building out a gubernatorial record sure to please primary voters. Name a top Republican issue today, chances are DeSantis has signed a bill and/or has run Facebook ads about it.

Hes signed bills banning vaccine passports, restricting ballot drop boxes and voting by mail, and setting mandates for civics curriculum in the state. Another bill prohibiting deplatforming was signed into law in May, but a federal judge issued a preliminary injunction on Wednesday, arguing it likely violates social media networks First Amendment freedom of speech rights. Hes run Facebook ads about critical race theory and transgender athletes in sports.

But DeSantis has backed away from partisanship when responding to the building collapse in Surfside, Florida. The first-term governor welcomed President Joe Biden to the state last week when he visited to meet with families and survivors. Youve recognized the severity of this tragedy from day one and youve been very supportive, DeSantis said of Biden.

Five Gop Contenders Other Than Trump For 2024

President Trump casts a long shadow over the Republican Party even as his attempts to cling to power look doomed to failure.

Trump could run again in 2024. If he does, it is hard to see anyone beating him for the Republican nomination.

Although Trump lost the presidential election by around 7 million votes, he is by far the most popular figure in the nation with GOP voters. He has enormous fundraising prowess – he raised about $170 million in the month after the election – and he can drive media attention like no one else.

Still, Trump will be 78 by the time of the next election. He also faces financial pressures, with large debts coming due in the next few years. He will continue to command headlines but there are solid reasons why he may not run for the presidency again.

There is speculative chatter that one of Trump’s children, perhaps his elder daughter Ivanka, could enter the political arena. But here are some other front-line contenders for the GOP nomination in 2024.

Nikki Haley

Haley was the incumbent governor of South Carolina when Trump chose her to become the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations at the start of his term. She served in the position for almost two years.

Haley was also governor during the time of the 2015 Charleston massacre, in which nine congregants of a historic Black church were murdered by a white supremacist gunman. Haley supported the removal of the Confederate flag from the South Carolina capitol in the aftermath.

‘pence Is Not Deterred’

The Republican alleged the legislation had one goal to give leftists an unfair constitutional advantage.

He said: The American people expect us to ensure that every eligible citizen is able to vote and also make sure that their vote is not stolen or diluted through errors, mistakes of outright fraud.

But, in June, Pence said he will likely never see eye to eye with Trump regarding the January 6 Capitol insurrection.

At a Hillsborough County GOP event, he said: You know, President Trump and I have spoken many times since we left office, and I dont know if well ever see eye to eye about that day.

He branded January 6 a dark day in the history of the US Capitol.

Trump was accused of inciting violence after he told his supporters to “fight like hell” on January 6 when Pence was in the Senate certifying Biden’s election win.

He appeared to blame Pence for not rejecting the Electoral College votes.

As supporters rampaged the Capitol, Trump tweeted: Mike Pence didnt have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our County and our Constitution.

Speculation that Trump will seek a run for the White House in 2024 continues to grow as he continues to tease supporters.

But, the former president has stopped short of declaring his candidacy.

Peter Thiel Is Funding Maga Primary Candidates Targeting Gop Members That Voted To Impeach Trump

byWillOctober 14, 2021, 9:34 am

Peter Thiel, tech billionaire and venture capitalist, is pouring money into pro-MAGA candidates who are running against members of the GOP that voted to impeach former President Trump.

According to Politico:

Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheneys primary challenger landed former President Donald Trumps endorsement before she even officially launched her campaign. Now, shes cashing big checks from Trumps biggest donors including tech billionaire Peter Thiel.

Thiel has contributed the maximum-allowed, $5,800 check to Harriet Hageman, the Trump-endorsed attorney running against Cheney in next years Republican primary. The former president has made Cheney, an outspoken critic who voted for his impeachment in January, his top target in the 2022 election, and now big-money benefactors like Thiel are piling into the race.

And, as Politico notes, Thiel isnt the only wealthy donor getting involved in funding pro-MAGA candidates. The list of people funding Hageman, challenger to Liz Cheney includes:

Wyoming transportation executive Timothy Mellon, who was the single biggest giver to the principal pro-Trump super PAC, America First Action, during the 2020 election. Dallas real estate executive James Mabrey, Apple associate general counsel Douglas Vetter and Florida medical company executive Peter Lamelas also gave to Hageman. Other big names include Lynette Friess, the widow of Republican mega-donor and prominent Trump backer Foster Friess.

More than 20 city employees were indicted, pleaded guilty, or were convicted of a range of charges, including several key political supporters of the Mayor. In 1985, The Boston Globe said Weld “has been by far the most visible figure in the prosecution of financial institutions.”

Weld gained national recognition in fighting public corruption: he won 109 convictions out of 111 cases.

What Republicans Are Running Against Trump

Trump has a history of insulting and belittling women when speaking to media and on social media. He made lewd comments, demeaned women’s looks, and called them names like ‘dog’, ‘crazed, ‘crying lowlife’, ‘face of a pig’, or ‘horseface’.

In October 2016, two days before the , a 2005 “” surfaced in which Trump was heard bragging about kissing and groping women without their consent, saying “when you’re a star, they let you do it, you can do anything… grab ’em by the .” The incident’s widespread media exposure led to Trump’s first public apology during the campaign and caused outrage across the political spectrum.
