Far from giving them the space to reach out to suburban voters, who were decisive in Georgia’s Atlanta area and in Arizona around Phoenix, it gave Democrats an opening to caricature them as pawns of the president and a party establishment that was using them.

“What the GOP does not seem to understand is that it is not as much about the messenger as it is about the message,” said Jen Jordan, a Georgia state senator who represents the Atlanta area. “Women aren’t dumb, and they are not going to overlook anti-woman, anti-family policies just because of who is pushing them.”

Loeffler in particular faced such a threat in her 2020 race from GOP Rep. Doug Collins, who ran as the more pro-Trump figure, that she pitched herself as “more conservative than Attila the Hun.”

Warnock portrayed Loeffler, a multi-millionaire who ranks as one of the wealthiest senators, as cynical and selfish, using her power to profit from the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Georgia, I am honored by the faith that you have shown in me,” Warnock said in livestreamed remarks after the polls closed Tuesday. “And I promise you this tonight: I am going to the Senate to work for all of Georgia, no matter who you cast your vote for in this election.”

Trump campaigned for Loeffler and Georgia’s other Republican in the runoff, David Perdue, on Monday evening in Dalton, in a largely rural northern region of Georgia. The race between Perdue and Democrat Jon Ossoff was rated by NBC News as too close to call.

New Georgia Senator Is Educated Young For The Senate And Most Importantly Rich

OPINION When Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp appointed Kelly Loeffler to fill the Senate seat of the beloved-but-ailing Sen. Johnny Isakson, a single headline said it all, repeated many times over. Who is Kelly Loeffler? the Atlanta-Journal Constitution, the local NBC affiliate, and Atlantas NPR station asked almost in unison.

Loeffler, 49, was such an unknown outside of Republican fundraising circles that even longtime political reporters struggled with the pronunciation of her last name. Was it LOFF-ler or LOW-fler?

In the month since Loeffler was named by Kemp, Georgians have mostly learned three things about their new senator. First, as she has stressed in all of her public appearances, Loeffler grew up on her familys corn and soybean farm in Illinois. Second, she is conservative. On the day she was appointed, Loeffler pro-Second Amendment, pro-military, pro-Wall and pro-Trump. Third, she is very, very rich.

Loeffler is so wealthy, in fact that she is likely to become the richest member of Congress the moment she is sworn in Monday.

But the most important question about Kelly Loeffler has no answer yet whether Kemps decision to appoint a little-known, but very wealthy, conservative woman can stop the bleeding for GOP candidates in Atlantas crucial northern suburbs in the 2020 elections.

The need was obvious, but full credit goes to Kemp for recognizing it and trying to address it where others refused to.

Putting aside that Kelly Loeffler is a greedy profiteer, shes simply not qualified for the job as Senator. And during her time in the Senate, shes done nothing to actually serve the people of Georgia. She gets her marching orders from Trump, and executes those orders no questions asked. The Georgia Senate run-offs are a defining moment to decisively reject Trump-ism and take control of the Senate. And we must defeat Kelly Loeffler to do it.

The Rev. Andrews says he is taking a nonpartisan approach to getting the souls to the polls a strategy many churches across the ideological spectrum have embraced to encourage voter engagement, he says.

My take on this important race is that it will be determined by who comes to vote, he said. What has changed a lot in Georgia in the last several years is that there has been a great and concerted effort to engage more voters younger voters, voters of color and that has played a key role.

He emphasizes that distrust doesnt mean these people arent faithful.

The Rev. Johnson reflects that, on the whole, This election is about lifting the pain and the promise of America it is a faithful dialogue about whether America will live up to all that she can be.

Isakson was born on December 28, 1944, in Atlanta, Georgia, the son of Julia and Edwin Andrew Isakson, a Greyhound bus driver, who later established an Atlanta real estate firm. His paternal grandparents were of Swedish descent, and his paternal grandfather was born in Östersund. His mother was of mostly British ancestry, and her family has been in the American South since the colonial era.

Isakson served in the Georgia Air National Guard from 1966 to 1972, leaving service as a staff sergeant. Isakson enrolled at the University of Georgia, where he became a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon social fraternity. Shortly after graduating from UGA, he opened the first Cobb County office of Northside Realty, a prominent Atlanta-area real estate firm that his father, Ed, helped to establish. Isakson became company president in 1979, a post he held for 22 years, during which Northside became the biggest independent real estate company in the Southeast and one of the largest in the United States.

Raphael Warnock, the senior pastor of Ebenezer Baptist church in Atlanta where Martin Luther King once preached, has won one of the two runoff elections for the US Senate in Georgia, putting the Democrats within striking distance of taking control of the upper chamber.

And Jon Ossoff declared victory over the Republican David Perdue on Wednesday morning, as he widened the lead over his opponent even though the race was still too close to call.

In a moment laden with historic significance, 51-year-old Warnock, who was born when Georgia was represented by two segregationist senators, becomes the first Black Democratic Senator to be elected from the south and Georgias first ever Black senator.

Warnocks victory over the ultra-Trump loyalist Kelly Loeffler, who tried to paint him as a dangerous radical, was called by Associated Press just after 2am.

It solidifies the astonishing transformation that has seen Georgia reshape itself from a southern Republican stronghold into a diverse and increasingly progressive state, just two months after Joe Biden became the first Democratic presidential candidate to win there in almost three decades.

Raphael Warnock Kelly Loeffler To Meet In Georgia Senate Debate

This could be the only head-to-head debate between the two candidates before the Jan. 5 runoff

Candidates for one of two U.S. Senate seats still hanging in the balance will face off in a debate that is drawing strong interest beyond Georgia.

That is because the seat now held by incumbent Republican Kelly Loeffler and being challenged by Democrat Raphael Warnock is one of two that will tip control of the Senate to either Republicans or Democrats. Loeffler and Warnock face off Sunday in a debate sponsored by the Atlanta Press Club. Although Warnock has sought additional debates, none have been scheduled yet, meaning this could be the only head-to-head debate between the two candidates.

The other Senate seat still undecided is between Georgia Republican U.S. Sen. David Perdue, who has declined to meet Democratic challenger Jon Ossoff in additional debates after the two jousted twice before the general election. Ossoff will get a solo platform Sunday to make his case.

The runoffs will determine which party controls the U.S. Senate, prompting a huge wave of money and organizing effort trying to get Georgians to vote again on or before Jan. 5. The states voters cast a narrow majority of ballots for Democrat Joe Biden in November, but Perdue outran President Donald Trump while Ossoff trailed Biden.

The recently appointed senator is struggling to overcome a damaging insider-trading scandal even though the investigation has been dropped

Last December, when Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp picked Kelly Loeffler to succeed retiring Republican Sen. Johnny Isakson, the thinking, it seemed at the time, was that she could corral support among suburban women in a state that has been trending purple in recent years.

But as the wealthy business executive braces for a competitive Senate special election this November, Loefflers apparent strengths have been overshadowed by a reputation damaging insider-trading scandal. The fallout has put her on the defensive in the crowded special election that includes two formidable Democratic opponents and a Republican challenger, Georgia Rep. Doug Collins, who is out for revenge after being snubbed for the Senate nod, despite having the backing of President Donald Trump. Come November, all candidates, regardless of party identification, will be on the ballot. If no candidate clears 50%, a runoff will be held in January.

Loeffler, of course, is ready to move on from the scandal and has been for some time. She denied from the start that there was any sort of foul play. Late last month, she was vindicated when the Justice Department dropped its investigation into allegations that she had dumped stocks after a briefing on the coronavirus in late January.

At some point between March 2020 when news broke that stocks owned by Sen. Loeffler were sold right after a committee briefing on the possible trajectory of covid19 and June 17, 2020, the Senate Ethics Committee opened an investigation into the trades. On June 17, they sent a letter to Sen. Loeffler informing her than since the Department of Justice had ended its investigation, they would too. No record of the investigation or the letter are available publicly.
