I have attached an installation video of the Blue Ox Patriot 2 Portable Braking System part # BRK2016 on a 2018 Jeep Wrangler for reference. This process will be pretty much identical to that of the Blue Ox Patriot 3 Portable Braking System part so you can use this as a guide. The difference is merely internal. That said, we don’t have an install videos of the Blue Ox Patriot 3 on a Jeep Wrangler at this time. Please note, a battery disconnect is required on most Jeep Wranglers so in order to power the above unit with the battery disconnected you will need an outlet kit for which I recommend using the Roadmaster 12 Volt Outlet Kit part.

What Is A Flat Tow Brake System
Also known as a dinghy towing brake, a flat tow brake system is a device that applies the brakes of the dinghy based on driver input. The tow brake goes into action as soon as the tow vehicles brake pedal is pushed or the remote is used to engage the brakes.

Note: Any time the towed vehicle is started up, the brake needs to be reset.
Note: If the lights are solid blue and red, there is too much pressure on the brake pedal. Pull the brake unit back, away from the pedal until the lights switch to a blinking blue and green sequence.
Note: The seat should not put any pressure on the back of the brake unit.

The difference between the Blue Ox Patriot and the Roadmaster Even Brake systems is that the Roadmaster part #9400 uses compressed air to actuate the brakes in the towed vehicle, while the Blue Ox part #BRK2012 uses an electric actuator to engage the brakes. The Blue Ox Patriot is simpler to install since it does not incorporate an air compressor and uses less power. Roadmaster suggests that due to the 15A power draw of the Even Brake system that every 6 hours or so you stop and run the dinghy engine for about 20 minutes to recharge its battery.

The Blue Ox Patriot III Radio Frequency, Portable Braking System – Proportional, uses a 12V powered remote that wirelessly connects to the 12V powered braking unit. This wireless remote has an inertia-based sensor in it that can sense the braking of the towing vehicle and communicates that braking need to the towed vehicle. The remote also give you a manual override feature like brake controllers do to allow you to apply the brakes in the towed vehicle as you determine necessary. It also has a light indicator so you know when the brakes are being applied on your towed vehicle from the cabin of your towing vehicle.This is one of the easiest systems to use and we have had many happy customers using this product because there is no false braking.I’ve attached an article to help with supplemental braking systems. You should be seeing brake activity on the monitor when applying the brakes in the RV. I would increase the force/intensity to 5 – that seems to be a good spot for most applications. See if this changes anything when testing out the brakes during travel. 67639

Do I Need A Tow Brake
In the United States, laws vary state by state with all states requiring tow brakes depending upon the weight of the towed vehicle or requiring mandatory stopping distances. For instance: Arizona requires a tow brake if the towed vehicle is 3,000 lbs. If you drive across the state line into California, a tow brake is required for towed vehicles weighing 1,500 lbs. Driving from California to Oregon again changes the dynamic. All vehicles towing a trailer or a towed vehicle in Oregon must stop within a specified distance. In Pennsylvania and North Dakota, tow brakes are required with no exceptions.
Canada requires tow brakes with no exceptions.
Having a supplemental tow brake installed helps prolong the brake life of the coach, if the coach brakes are doing all of the work to stop the combined vehicles, they brakes will wear prematurely. The coach will brake more easily and the stopping distance will not increase due to the increased weight of the towed vehicle.

This is going to be a portable, proportional, supplemental braking system for your towed vehicle. Now, those two things, portable and proportional, are going to be the two main benefits to this particular system for your vehicle. It works for a lot of different cars out there. It’s pretty universal.
