The Gate Doesnt Open Unless There Is Someone Standing Next To It

Patriot 1 basic troubleshooting #6

This problem can occur in two scenarios.

  • One reason might be the antenna which was cut or just shortened. Try to put it as high as you can and be careful not to let it touch any other metal surface.
  • The other might be that some other source of transmitting is interfering with your source. Check to see if there is any possible source of radio transmitting near where you live. This could be a radio station, a military base, a flight path or an airport. If it happens that you do have these sources near you, then you will have to get a special receiver and an antenna.

Check the face of your receiver cover. It is common that gate openers have separate receivers. Look for the names like Multi Code, Liftmaster, Linear and Mega code. Check your remote clicker because it will have the same name as the receiver cover does. While pressing the remote you should listen and wait for the click coming from the rec receiver.

The Gate Is Not Reacting Moving Or Making Any Sound

  • First you should check if the breaker and the switch are working properly.
  • Check the outlet in which the gate is plugged. You can use some other device to see if they work when plugged in the same outlet.
  • Then look at all your outlets to see if their ground fault interrupter is tripping. You have to check all of them because if GFI is tripping this action will cause power to be cut from any device in the GFIs circuit.
  • The problem might be the remote controller, maybe its broken, the batteries are dead and need replacement or it has run out of its working hours.

When To Use Manual Release Mode

There will be situations when you will have to put your gate into manual mode. You may experience a power outage or your gate isnt working because its broken or you forgot to do an annual service and its showing difficulties in its operating. If the power is off this mode will allow the gate to open and close. You should have a manual release key in your possession and the gate should have been tested to see if it works in manual mode.

The Dip Switches Are Not Working Properly

Whether you have a swing gate or sliding gate, you need a DIP switch to be able to open it. You can have several DIP switches and transmitters for everyone else in your family to control the gate.

A DIP switch is basically an electric switch that consists of other little switches. This DIP switch is inside your remote control and the gate opener.

Both DIP switches have a sequence of all the small switches going up or down. This creates a fingerprint and they have to match exactly so that your automatic gate opens or closes when you use your remote control.

So, you can check the DIP switches in your transmitters to ensure that they are not the reason for your gate randomly opening or closing.

The 6 Most Common Automatic Gate Problems

Automatic gates provide an extra level of security for a residential or commercial property. Not only does an automatic gate offer peace of mind and security, it also offers you the convenience of opening and closing the gate remotely. However, there do exist some common automatic gate problems which you have to keep an eye out for.

Following are the 6 most common automatic gate problems:

1. NoiseSometimes, an automatic gate can generate a large amount of noise when opening and closing. There could be a number of reasons behind it that dont always seem immediately clear. Usually, the noise occurs because the mechanism that moves the gates is worn out. You can fix this automatic gate problem by taking apart and then reassembling the mechanism or having a new part fitted.

2. Gate Wont Open or CloseThis usually occurs due to power outage. Automatic gates require a constant supply of electricity in order to operate properly. Power outages and failures will prevent your automatic gate from working. If your gate is not opening or closing, then you should check whether there is a power outage. If there is no power outage or any other electrical problem, then test your automatic gate manually to identify any operational issues. Hire the help of a professional if you cannot identify the cause of the problem.

The Batteries And Power Source

If your gate doesnt open when you use your remote or keypad, start by ruling out the simple things first. To determine if your devices batteries are the problem, try using one of the other controls that opens your gate. If it works, its likely that the batteries in your device have lost their charge. However, if a new set of batteries doesnt get the device working again, then it may be time to replace the remote or keypad.

If you dont have a second control handy, you can usually tell that the batteries in a remote or keypad have lost their charge if the devices built-in light no longer flashes when you use it.

If the batteries arent the problem, check to see if the power source for the gate operator has been disrupted. Ensure that its plugged into a working outlet and check your breaker box to determine if the circuit breaker for your gate system has been switched off.

If youve lost power, check out our blog post about Summer Storms & Automatic Gates, which explains how to manually open your automatic gate during a power outage.

The Swinging Gate Doesnt Open

There can be three causes for this problem.

  • The first one is because the remote controller is broken, its batteries are dead and they need replacement or its just run out of its working hours.
  • Then it could be your ascending driveways fault. If this is the situation you are in, then either make the gate open to the other side if its possible or just hang the gate to a higher post so it doesnt reach the driveway as it opens.
  • Since the gate safety loop sensor is present at most gates, you should check it to see if this sensor is the cause of malfunction. It is made to prevent the gate from harming any person, animal or object that might be on its path. If the sensor notices an obstacle it reverses the gate process/disables it. If the sensors arent working properly, you should call a technician.

Why Does My Electric Gate Not Work

Patriot 1 basic troubleshooting #1

Were thinking of getting one of those fancy electric gates at home. You know, the ones that open and close automatically. This should stop the dog and chickens escaping so much!

One thing that puts me off though are some of the problems , that homeowners experience with their electric gates. Thats why Ive been researching them for this article.

There are many reasons electric gates do not work, including dead batteries, cold weather, damaged photocells, dead remote batteries, power outages, being stuck in manual mode, signal interference or something physically blocking the gate.

Lets look at the common problems with electric gates in more detail, and work out how we can find solutions for these issues and maintain our gates so they dont happen again

How To Troubleshoot Gate Response And Sensor Issues

Is your driveway gate refusing to open or close when you use your remote control or enter your keycode? If so, it may be due to a response issue or a communication failure between the gate control and gate operator. Alternatively, it may be the result of the photo-eye sensors firing or malfunctioning. Heres what you need to know to troubleshoot these residential gate responsiveness problems.

The Gate Keeps Making A Beeping Sound

If your gate keeps beeping, especially during the night after the storm and making battery low sounds, you should try to add one more battery, that is, more power. It is possible that after the storm your battery might make sounds as if it is dead but the next day everything will be fine. This might occur with Mighty Mule Gate openers. If the trick with adding the second battery doesnt work, then you can just contact the companys customer support.

Why Is My Electric Gate Not Working After Rain

In theory, your electric gate is an outdoor product, so is designed to work in rain. In theory. However, if your electric gate motor hasnt been properly sealed, rain could get in and cause all sorts of problems.

If water gets into the electric gate motor PC board, it will cause it to short circuit and stop working. If this happens, youll find out pretty quickly, as your gate will stop working.

Gradual rainfall damage can also cause problems. If the rain keeps getting in, the components will start to rust, resulting in irreversible damage to the motor.

The answer? Make sure your motor is correctly sealed in the first place. If this has already happened, get the electric gate motor checked out to assess any damage, then seal it again, thoroughly.

The Limit Switches Are Faulty

Gear Motor for Patriot RSL Slide Gate Openers (Complete with Bracket ...

No matter what type of electric gate you have, it needs a limit switch. A limit switch is what stops your automatic gate from closing while your car is in the way. Also, it is the feature that allows your gate to open when a car approaches.

In other words, a limit switch is what allows your gate to properly open or close all the way at the right time. The benefit is that it doesnt need human intervention.

If your gate operator starts to open and close randomly, then there may be a problem with the limit switches.

A limit switch is a kind of sensor that can detect the presence or absence of something or someone. It can detect the speed, position, range of movement, and the end of travel of a person or object.

Your gates limit switch has an actuator which is a device that makes an object move. This actuator can be an arm, knob, roller, level, or plunger, and it is connected to a set of contacts. When an object contacts the actuator, then the device is ordered to do a specific electrical connection. In this case, opening or closing your gate.

So, the reason that your limit switch is faulty could be because of a damaged actuator.

The Gate Doesnt Stop Where It Is Supposed To

If your gate doesnt stop where it is supposed to it is mainly due to the limit switch nut or cam failing to hit the limit switch at the designated time. If you have a slide gate youll notice that a lever is holding the limit nut in place. Its riding inside the slots of the limit nut. To solve this problem you have to press it back out of the slot on the limit shaft. This will put it back in its correct place.

Theres An Interference With The Gates Radio Frequency

There are several types of gate openers out there. You have keypads, remote controls, infrared, and much more. But, the majority of these will work through radio frequency. This means that there may be a time when theres interference with your gates radio frequency.

If your electric gate randomly opens and closes without you telling it to, then something is causing it to think you are. It could even happen that your gate signals are interfering with other electric gates.

There are several devices and objects that could interfere with your gates radio frequency. Some of these are home appliances, clock radios, car radios, and even Christmas lights!

Besides making your automatic gate open and close at random times, it could cause your gate remote control to not work at all.

What you can do to avoid this is to keep your appliances at least 15 feet away from your electric gate and its receiver. Another option is to change your automatic gate for one that does not use radio signals to open or close.

Why Does My Electric Gate Open By Itself

Patriot 1 basic troubleshooting #2

If you can rule out any mechanical problems youve gone manual and the gates open and close smoothly, then you can probably assume you have an electrical problem. You could need a new motherboard you could have a power problem or interference.

Even though gates are powered by AC current, they need DC current as well. If you know youve had a power outage, then your gate may work for a while afterwards, but it may start to slow down and eventually stop working. Check out the battery voltage and examine the connecting cables. Can you see any wear or corrosion?

If your gate is opening and closing at weird times, you could have interference. Maybe someone nearby just installed a garage door opener at the same frequency as your gate. Wi-Fi and cell phones are sometimes to blame, too.

Remote Controller Doesnt Work

As on any remote controllers, there is a little red light on the top part of it. This light will be lit when you give a command to the gate to open or close. If the light didnt lit up when you pressed the remote key, then you problem can either be the batteries or the life span of the controller. Try changing the batteries with the new ones. If the problem continues after you have replaced the batteries then it is obvious that you need to buy a new remote controller since the old one has probably run out of its working hours. You can call a technician or a supplier from who you bought it. The technician will program the new remote controller and your problem will be solved.

Can Electric Gates Be Forced Open

An electric gate can be forced open, but it requires a lot of brute force, and the gates wont come out well from this.

If you need to force the gates yourself, you shouldnt have to risk doing any damage. If the gates get stuck in the closed mode, you can use the manual release mechanism, which is typically a key that you insert into the motor housing. This allows the gate to be opened without damage.

But what about intruders? Can they force open your electric gates? Well yes, but with enormous difficulty, and breaking in through electric gates is hardly what youd call a stealth job. Electric gates remain a fantastic deterrent to intruders.

Swing gates can be forced by pushing at the edge furthest away from the hinge. This can be prevented with a locking mechanism that holds the two gates together.

Sliding gates are even harder to force open, as they can be opened only by pushing against the vertical supports that hold the gates. Good luck with that
