Republicans Have A Modest Engagement Edge

About three-quarters of registered voters who support Republicans , and nearly the same share among those who support Democrats , say it really matters which party wins control of Congress. This is little changed in recent months and is on par with the shares saying this in the run-up to the 2018 midterm elections .

But GOP voters are substantially more likely to have thought a lot about the upcoming election than Democratic voters: 49% of Republican supporters now say this, up slightly from 45% in August. Among Democratic supporters, 38% say this, little changed from August.

Similar to other recent elections, there are demographic differences in the extent to which registered voters say that they have given a lot of thought to the upcoming elections, are extremely or very motivated to vote and that it really matters which party wins control of Congress.

White voters are more likely than Black, Hispanic or Asian voters to say they are motivated to vote, have thought a lot about the upcoming election and to say the outcome of the election really matters. For example, about three-quarters of White voters say they are extremely or very motivated to vote, compared with 63% of Black voters, 57% of Hispanic voters and 55% of Asian voters.

However, Republican candidates enjoy a clear advantage 52% vs 41% among the set of voters who have thought a lot about the election.

South Dakota: Monae Johnson

Monae Johnson, a former employee of the South Dakota secretary of states office, repeatedly refused in an October 2022 interview with KELOLAND News to say that she accepted that Biden won the 2020 election legitimately. I dont want to be an election denier, but I wasnt behind the scenes, I wasnt in the office at the time, so, she said. The reporter said, Okay. I wanted to give you an opportunity to acknowledge that, if youd like that he did win. Do you acknowledge that? Johnson responded, Im not going to acknowledge that, so, thank you.

Johnson also said Ive never denied any election, and she added, I know President Trump won South Dakota as a Republican state. Joe Biden won the swing states hes our current president. But I want to move on to the next elections, and I want to inspire people that their vote is going to be tabulated exactly like they vote, cause thats going to just bring the trust to the citizens of South Dakota.

Running on an election integrity platform, Johnson defeated incumbent South Dakota Secretary of State Steve Barnett at a state Republican convention in June. Her Democratic opponent is Tom Cool, the former executive director of the Council on College Admission in South Dakota.

Johnsons campaign did not respond to a request for comment.

The Case For A Warnock Victory

In 2021, Warnock and Ossoff won, in part, by gaining on President Bidens November 2020 margins, especially in counties with the largest shares of Black voters. That could be because Democrats worked overtime to turn out their voters and prominent figures like Stacey Abrams, the states 2018 and 2022 Democratic gubernatorial nominee, pioneered a new playbook to get voters of color out to the polls, marshaling the political power of the growing number of Black people who have moved to Georgia over the past two decades.

Warnock is again banking on voters of color to deliver for him. And they very well could: Exit polling data from earlier this month shows that roughly 28 percent of the voting electorate in Georgia was Black while 6 percent was Latino, roughly the same shares as in 2020. This shows that turnout among these blocs didnt notably tick down despite it being a midterm election with very different dynamics from 2020 and it could be a sign that energy remains high among these groups. And that lines up with other polling suggesting that Warnock supporters are just more excited about backing their candidate than Walker supporters. An October Fox News poll found that 63 percent of Warnock proponents backed the Democrat enthusiastically, compared with 49 percent who said the same of Walker.

Top Midterm Issues: The Economy Future Of Democracy

As was the case earlier in the year, the economy remains voters top voting issue this year. About eight-in-ten registered voters say the economy is very important to their vote.

The future of democracy in this country is also among the top issues, with 70% of voters saying it is very important to their vote. Six-in-ten or more mention education , health care , energy policy and violent crime .

Gun policy and abortion also rate as very important issues by majorities of registered voters. Abortion rose in importance as a voting issue earlier in the year but is little changed since August.

While majorities in both parties say the economy is particularly important to their vote, voters who support Republican candidates are significantly more likely to say this .

Immigration and violent crime are also top issues among GOP voters: About three-quarters of Republican voters cite immigration or violent crime as very important issues to their vote. Democratic voters are much less likely to say either is a very important issue to their vote.

Climate change also rates highly for Democratic voters about two-thirds say it is very important to their vote, compared with only 9% of Republican voters who say the same.

Larry Jacobs, director of the Center for the Study of Politics and Governance at the University of Minnesota, called it alarming that so many Minnesota Republican candidates this cycle denied the legitimacy of the 2020 election.

It undermines confidence in our electoral process, questions the legitimacy of our democracy. It’s a serious situation, he said.

Finally, another way to look at this is by state. The appendix to this article lists the number of election deniers on the ballot by state. States Biden won, like California and New York, have very few election deniers on the November ballot, especially given their size. But important swing states such as Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin have many election deniers on their ballots. Biden won in all of these states except for Florida, but his wins were narrow in each. These states are ones that Trumpor another GOP nomineewould have to win back in order to win the presidency again. Thus, it is not surprising that these states have the most candidates who are running on a platform of changing election procedures to stop what they believed to be cheating in the 2020 elections.

Civil War And Reconstruction

American settlers began to establish cotton in north Florida, which required numerous laborers, which they supplied by buying slaves in the domestic market. By 1860, Florida had only 140,424 people, of whom 44% were enslaved. There were fewer than 1,000 free before the American Civil War.

On January 10, 1861, nearly all delegates in the Florida Legislature approved an ordinance of secession, declaring Florida to be “a sovereign and independent nation”an apparent reassertion to the preamble in Florida’s Constitution of 1838, in which Florida agreed with Congress to be a “Free and Independent State.” The ordinance declared Florida’s secession from the , allowing it to become one of the founding members of the .

The Confederacy received little military help from Florida the 15,000 troops it offered were generally sent elsewhere. Instead of troops and manufactured goods, Florida did provide salt and, more importantly, beef to feed the Confederate armies. This was particularly important after 1864, when the Confederacy lost control of the Mississippi River, thereby losing access to Texas beef. FORMER U.N. AMBASSADOR NIKKI HALEYA former governor of South Carolina and the daughter of Indian immigrants, Haley was the highest-profile woman in Trump’s Cabinet, serving as his ambassador to the United Nations.

Haley, 50, considered a rising Republican star, has alternately held Trump close and at bay.

She publicly criticized him during his 2016 presidential campaign and again after the Jan. 6 riot, saying his actions after the 2020 election will be “judged harshly by history.”

Her rhetoric later softened when she called him a friend who still had a role to play in the party. In June, Haley teased a 2024 run “if there is a place for me,” and said in October she would consider the idea at the start of next year.

In several states, Republican candidates who dispute the 2020 election results are running for positions that would give them control over elections

Several races were on the ballot this fall could have profound consequences for American democracy. In some states, Republican candidates who doubted the 2020 election results, or in some cases actively worked to overturn them, were running for positions in which they would have tremendous influence over how votes are cast and counted. There has been deep concern they could use their offices to spread baseless information about election fraud and try to prevent the rightful winners of elections from being seated.

In total, 291 Republicans a majority of the partys nominees this cycle have questioned the outcome of the 2020 presidential election, according to a Washington Post tally.

Theyre running to be governors, who play a role in enacting election rules. Theyre running to be secretaries of state, who oversee voting and ballot counting. Theyre running to be attorneys general, who are responsible for investigating allegations of fraud handling litigation in high-stakes election suits. Theyre running to be members of Congress, who vote to certify the presidential vote every four years. Theyre running to be state lawmakers, who can pass voting laws, launch investigations, and, according to some fringe legal theories, try to block the certification of presidential electors.

Vermont: H Brooke Paige

H. Brooke Paige, a conservative activist in Vermont, ran unopposed for the Republican nomination for secretary of state while also running unopposed for the party nominations for state attorney general, auditor and treasurer. He plans to turn down the latter three nominations and focus on his secretary of state campaign, the Vermont website VTDigger reported.

The day after a mob of Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol in 2021, Paige falsely claimed on his Facebook page that the left stole the election through a subversive plan involving stuffing the ballot box and corrupting the tabulation of the election results. He made other false election claims in subsequent posts.

In an interview with CNN in August, Paige acknowledged that Biden was the real winner in Vermont in 2020, but said the question of whether Biden legitimately won the presidency is such a complex question, hinging on how someone defines legitimately, that he could not offer a direct answer.

Paige criticized state-level changes to voting rules in 2020, said he was disheartened by anecdotal evidence of suspicious behavior during the vote count there is no indication of wrongdoing by any states vote-counters and said his biggest concern was pro-Democratic media bias, which he argued had been a major contributor to Bidens victory.

Democratic incumbent Jim Condos is retiring. The Democratic nominee is state Rep. Sarah Copeland Hanzas.

List Of The 2020 Republican Party Primary Candidates

Over Half Of Republicans Running For Federal Statewide Office Have Raised Unfounded Doubts About 2020 Election

Over half of all Republican midterm candidates running for federal and statewide office have raised unfounded doubts about the validity or integrity of the 2020 election results, and according to CBS News’ analysis, all of the states but two Rhode Island and North Dakota have a candidate on the the ballot who is an “election denier,” that is, who denies the results of the 2020 election were valid.

Among the 597 GOP candidates running for state or federal office this November, 308 have raised unfounded doubts about the results of the 2020 election.

Here’s the candidate breakdown:

• 20 out of 37 Republicans running for governor
• 9 out of 31 Republicans running for lieutenant governor
• 9 out of 30 Republicans running for attorney general
• 12 out of 27 Republicans running for secretary of state
• 20 out of 36 Republicans running for the U.S. Senate
• 238 out of 436 Republicans running for U.S. House

Other candidates backtracked after their primary races, hoping to appear less extreme to a wider electorate. CBS News still considers these candidates to have questioned the integrity of the election, even if they have since changed course.

The same is true in Michigan, where Tudor Dixon and Kristina Karamo, running for governor and secretary of state, have also said they wouldn’t have certified Mr. Biden’s 2020 victory.

On June 1, 2020, federal law enforcement officials used batons, rubber bullets, projectiles, , and smoke to remove a largely peaceful crowd of protesters from , outside the . Trump then walked to , where protesters had set a small fire the night before he posed for photographs holding a Bible, with senior administration officials later joining him in photos. Trump said on June 3 that the protesters were cleared because “they tried to burn down the church and almost succeeded”, describing the church as “badly hurt”.

Adam Laxalt : Former Nevada Attorney General and Trump Nevada campaign co-chair Adam Laxalt said in a radio interview in August 2021, “There’s no question that they rigged the election.” He also worked with the 2020 Trump campaign in filing a lawsuit in November 2020 with Ric Grenell, the Trump-appointed former director of national intelligence to try to convince a judge to “stop the counting of improper votes.” Laxalt also spread a false claim about thousands of illegal votes in an op-ed after Mr. Biden had been certified as the winner.

Laxalt has since acknowledged Mr. Biden is the president, but has not explicitly said he was legitimately elected. “I know you want to make this entire election about this. We have major issues going on in our country right now,” he said, avoiding the question in .

JD Vance : “I believe the election was stolen too, but why are we talking about the past,” JD Vance said during a campaign event in January. When asked by Spectrum News Ohio that same month if he felt the election had been stolen, Vance affirmed that he does. “The fundamental problem is we had a massive effort to shift the election by very powerful people in this country. I don’t care whether you say it’s rigged, whether you say it’s stolen, like I’ll say what I’m going to say about it,” he said.
