Trump-backed incumbent Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose will win the Republican primary in his bid for a second term as the states top elections officer, according to a projection from the CNN Decision Desk.
He defeated conservative challenger John Adams and will face Democrat Chelsea Clark, who ran unopposed, in the general election this fall.
LaRose, a former state senator, initially criticized Trump and other Republicans who claimed the 2020 election had been stolen, calling it irresponsible to make the charge without evidence.
But LaRose, like so many others in the GOP, yielded in the face of political expediency and began to parrot alarmist rhetoric about the security of the elections he is tasked with overseeing.
He said in a tweet that “President Trump is right to say voter fraud is a serious problem and suggested Democrats would undermine election security if the party gained control of his current office.
” presented himself as above petty, partisan politics,” David Niven, a political scientist at the University of Cincinnati, told CNNs Fredreka Schouten. “To go from that to playing footsie with election deniers is a real transformation.”

Challengers. Incumbents. Candidates for Senate, House, governor, secretaries of state and even state legislators. The nearly 130 candidates President Donald Trump has endorsed so far in 2022 cast a wide net and test the former president’s influence at the helm of the Republican party.
Trump’s 2022 got off to a strong start in Texas’ primaries, with his 33 endorsed candidates all winning or going into runoff races in strong positions. But a person familiar with Trump’s thinking said that the poor performances and stumbles of some of his chosen candidates, and some bad advice he had received about them, are making him more cautious about throwing his weight behind contenders in some key upcoming primary races.
In some cases, the performances have raised questions about the potency of Trump’s endorsements and his power over Republican primary voters now that he is no longer in office. In places like Georgia, North Carolina and Alabama, he wasn’t able to clear the field for his favored contender.
But elsewhere, Trump’s selectiveness has made his endorsement all the more coveted. In a Ohio’s crowded Republican primary for an open Senate seat, slated for May 3rd, several of the candidates are intensely jockeying for the former president’s blessing, positioning themselves as being significantly more “pro-Trump” or “America first” than their competitors and seeking facetime with him.

J.D. Vance thanked former President Donald Trump for his endorsement Tuesday night as he celebrated winning the Republican Senate nomination in Ohio’s race to replace retiring Sen. Rob Portman.
The political press, Vance said, wanted to write a story that this campaign would be the death of Donald Trumps ‘America First’ agenda. Ladies and gentlemen, it aint the death of the ‘America First’ agenda.
Vance rocketed from the middle of the seven-candidate pack in polls to the front after Trump endorsed him late in the race and visited Delaware County to hold a rally for him.
Trumps endorsement came despite Vances sharp criticism of him in 2016 which Vance has since renounced.
Vance used a portion of his victory speech to express his gratitude to Trump, saying “I absolutely got to thank the 45th.”
He said Tuesday night that the primary was a referendum on what kind of a Republican Party we want and what kind of a country we want.
Vance didnt criticize his primary competitors, noting that it was tough and that there were a lot of negative ads. But he praised his top four rivals by name, thanking state Sen. Matt Dolan, businessman Mike Gibbons, former state GOP chairwoman Jane Timken and former state treasurer Josh Mandel.
Vance also offered a preview of his general election message against the Democratic nominee, Rep. Tim Ryan, casting doubt on Ryans moderate bona fides and saying that hes a consistent vote for President Bidens agenda.

Cruz, 50, could start out a 2024 election campaign in a much stronger position than his first run in 2016, when he came in second. Its not uncommon for Republicans to select the recent runner up to later be their nominee which is what happened to Mitt Romney, John McCain, Bob Dole and Ronald Reagan.
A lot has happened to Cruz since 2016. For one, he became an ardent Trump supporter and grew a beard. But Cruz has also learned lessons from his first presidential run. Should he run again in the 2024 election, hed be a much more experienced campaigner with a more finely tuned message, higher name ID, and a carefully maintained donor base, one Republican strategist said.
Cruz has also faced backlash for objecting to President Joe Bidens Electoral College win. Following the deadly Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, seven Democrats asked the Senate Ethics Committee to investigate Cruz and Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., for amplifying claims of election fraud that led to violence. In Texas, the Republican Accountability Project paid for 100 billboards calling on Cruz to resign. Cruz also angered some close to him, like a longtime friend and former campaign chair who denounced him, and his chief spokesperson, who resigned, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Sen Josh Hawley Of Missouri
Though controversial, Hawley, 41, is a fundraising machine and hes quickly made a name for himself. The blowback Hawley faced for objecting to Bidens Electoral College win included a lost book deal and calls for him to resign from students at the law school where he previously taught. His mentor, former Sen. John Danforth of Missouri, said that supporting Hawley was the biggest mistake Ive ever made in my life.
Still, he brought in more than $1.5 million between Jan. 1 and March 5, according to Axios, and fundraising appeals in his name from the National Republican Senatorial Committee brought in more cash than any other Republican except NRSC Chair Sen. Rick Scott of Florida. Just because youre toxic in Washington doesnt mean you cant build a meaningful base of support nationally.
One Republican strategist compared the possibility of Hawley 2024 to Cruz in 2016. Hes not especially well-liked by his colleagues , but hes built a national profile for himself and become a leading Republican voice opposed to big technology companies.
Hawley and his wife, Erin, have three children. He got his start in politics as Missouri attorney general before being elected to the Senate in 2018. Hawley graduated from Stanford and Yale Law.
