Mac Jones Sought Advice From Cam Newton Ahead Of New England Patriots Preseason Debut

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton said rookie Mac Jones is so quiet at times that he tries to crack “the Da Vinci Code of the seriousness,” but that didn’t stop Jones from seeking Newton out before Thursday night’s preseason opener against the Washington Football Team.

“He came and talked to me, and we talked it out about just his expectation. Every young quarterback goes through it — the excitement, the anticipation,” Newton relayed after the Patriots’ 22-13 win at Gillette Stadium. “He wants to be so perfect, and I see his preparation is always pristine. That’s what I admire about him.”

Jones relieved Newton after two series on Thursday night, receiving a standing ovation from many in attendance when he took the field with 55 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

He played five series and went 13-of-19 passing for 87 yards, with no touchdowns and no interceptions. The first series came behind the team’s first-unit offensive line, an indication of how the coaching staff views his progress to date.

The Patriots scored two field goals while Jones was at quarterback, although there easily could have been one touchdown. Arguably his best throw of the night was one of his incompletions, a deep 34-yard pass down the left sideline on his first drive that went off receiver Kristian Wilkerson’s hands in the end zone.

Cam Newton Vs Mac Jones

Newton entered training camp as the unquestioned starter, with Jones given only the slimmest odds to win a quarterback battle. Fast forward to the final preseason game and theres a legitimate discussion about each player and who gives this team a better opportunity to win.

This wont be an easy matchup for Jones nor Newton. New Yorks defense is outstanding and head coach Joe Judge plans to use this game as a dress rehearsal for the regular season. While it seems Bill Belichick has made a decision, this game could change that.

  • Superman Returns?: Just as Jones started receiving buzz, Newton responded with a phenomenal performance. He lit up the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2, completing 8-of-9 attempts fr 103 yards, one touchdown and posting a 151.4 passer rating. Keep in mind, he hasnt unleashed his skills on the run.
  • Mac Attack: Through his first two preseason games, Jones is operating with surgeon-like precision. The rookie has completed 68.4% of his passes and holds an impressive 84.6 passer rating on a second-string offense.

Advantage: Cam Newton

When Will Mac Jones Start For The Patriots

Projected to have a terrific defense in 2021, Newton could prove to do enough to keep the Patriots in most contests perhaps even fight for playoff contention. However, if things go south on offense again this year, Bill Belichik could turn to Jones for help.

Jones just fits exactly what the Patriots like to do. Hes extremely accurate in the short to intermediate-range and still has the ability to push the ball down the field when need be. In addition, Jones seems to already be ahead of the learning curve when it comes to going through his progressions and getting the ball out on time.

During his time at Alabama, Jones passed for 6,126 yards to go with a whopping 56 passing touchdowns and just 7 interceptions, according to Sports Reference. On paper, Jones elite production in the best conference in college football was intriguing, but many questioned his upside as his pedestrian size, arm strength, and mobility all came into play.

Fortunately, Mac Jones isnt letting any of these knocks on him affect his play on the field so far, and he has been thoroughly impressive through two preseason games.

We dont know how Mac Jones will look in the regular season when he eventually becomes the starter for the New England Patriots, but its hard not to be encouraged by what we have seen so far. There could be plenty more to come in the future.

Patriots Wide Receivers Vs Giants Cornerbacks

NFL preseason Patriots vs Panthers: Live updates, news ...

The Patriots were flush with cap space this spring, giving them the flexibility to build this passing attack to Josh McDaniels preferences. Instead of spending heavily on Kenny Golladay, who now plays for the Giants, New England signed Hunter Henry, Jonnu Smith, Kendrick Bourne and Nelson Agholor.

Its that approach that makes this Patriots vs Giants matchup so interesting. New Yorks secondary is loaded with shutdown cornerback James Bradberry, playmaking No. 2 corner Adoree Jackson and Darnay Holmes in the slot.

  • Bradberry Island: New York frequently let Bradberry shadow No. 1 wide receivers this past season and the results say everything. According to Pro Football Focus, Bradberry surrendered just 44 receptions in 633 coverage snaps and quarterbacks only had a 70.1 passer rating when throwing in his direction.
  • Unheralded No. 1: If Newton is the Patriots starting quarterback this season, buy all the stock possible in Jakobi Myers. The chemistry between this duo is outstanding and they put that on display every other drive. Myers is the guy Bradberry will keep a close eye on in this matchup.

Advantage: New York Giants

Daniel Jones Vs Patriots Defense

The Giants are treating Jones like a veteran, holding him out of preseason action. Its a bold move, considering some of the issues we saw last season, but this coaching staff is clearly confident in the third-year quarterback. Fortunately, well get to see Jones take the field in Sundays Patriots vs Giants clash.

Discover where the Patriots and Giants land in our NFL defense rankings

  • Find Consistency: If fans were hoping Jones would dominate training camp, that hasnt been the case. There have been phenomenal days and stretches where he just misses throws. This is his lone opportunity to display some of his growth and it will be a challenge against a loaded Patriots defense.
  • Patriots Pressure: New England wont need to show off its unique defensive looks or show its hand on unique blitz packages. The Patriots added a lot of depth to the front seven this offseason, which will make it a lot easier to pressure the quarterback. Keep that in mind against the passer who ranked 17th in quarterback rating and completion rate last season.

Advantage: New England Patriots

Ground Game Shows Its Layers Of Depth

Rhamondre Stevenson rumbled his way to two touchdowns in his first NFL game. And in his second, the rookie out of Oklahoma forged through twice more. Quick feet and contact balance were displayed by Stevenson on Thursday before a fumble in the final frame. But the depth throughout the position was present for more than a glimpse.

New Englands running backs totaled 207 yards on the ground over the course of 40 carries against the Eagles. Additional strides were made in the passing game.

After starter Damien Harris bounced into the end zone for the games first points, Sony Michel appeared comfortable working out of the backfield, catching each of his four looks for 37 yards while captain James White gathered two passes for 13 yards. And the 5-foot-6 J.J. Taylor operated on punt returns and had a hand in 15 total offensive touches, spinning through the Philadelphia defensive front for 111 yards as well as a score in the third quarter. Core special-teamer Brandon Bolden was not in uniform for a second consecutive week.

Will New England Patriots See Results After Spending $163 Million In Free Agency

Washington Football Team vs. New England Patriots | Preseason Week 1 2021 NFL Game Highlights

Stephen A. Smith explains why the Patriots are positioned to take back the AFC East crown from the Bills this season.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — If recent history holds true to form, the free-spending 2021 New England Patriots should receive a bump from their seven victories earned last season. The bigger challenge will be sustaining that beyond this year.

Consider that from 2016 to 2020, the team that spent the most guaranteed money in NFL free agency improved by an average of 5.4 wins that season, according to ESPN Stats & Information research. The issue was the following season, as teams that spent the most guaranteed money in free agency from 2016 to 2019 had an average decline of 5.5 wins in Year 2.

Now coach Bill Belichick’s Patriots join the mix, having smashed the NFL record set by the 2020 Miami Dolphins . The Patriots guaranteed $163 million in unrestricted free agency, which owner Robert Kraft has acknowledged is risky business.

It is an approach usually reserved for more desperate teams. The Patriots haven’t qualified.

But coming off an uncharacteristic 7-9 season, albeit in a COVID-19 year, Belichick backed up the Brinks truck, and in turn, the short-term picture — starting with Sunday’s season opener against the visiting Dolphins — looks much better.

Nordin Folk Share New Englands Kicking Operation

Strong to scattered performances from rookie free agent Quinn Nordin were seen through two weeks of field goals and extra points. But the third week of the preseason brought a 48-yarder in the second quarter and a 37-yarder in the fourth quarter for the Wolverine.

Nordin finished 2-of-3 on field goals after a 54-yarder sailed left with under a minute to go. He made his lone extra point in a timeshare.

Veteran kicker Nick Folk got the first field goal, converting from 41 yards out. The 2007 Pro Bowler re-signed with New England in March on a one-year contract featuring $1.225 million guaranteed.

Washington Football Team Vs Patriots Odds

Just because it is the season doesnt mean that sportsbooks wont accept action on the game. Heres how the game is projected in the books.

Spread: New England -1 | Washington +1

Over / Under: 38

Moneyline: New England -120 | Washington +100

Prediction: New England covers, Under 38, New England -120

Analysis: The problem with wagers on the preseason is that there isnt a set rule for when the back-ups will come in. Still, the common denominator whether the first string is on the field or the third-string is the coaching staff. From this position, New England has a clear advantage. Expect the Patriots depth to outperform that of Washington.

What To Look For During The New England Patriots’ Preseason

All eyes in New England’s preseason action will be on the quarterback postion. Will Newton be better than he was in 2020? Is Jones the real-deal future franchise quarterback? Those are undoubtedly the most important things to look for during Patriots preseason action.

Cam Newton: Mac Jones is cool like the other side of the pillowMac Jones: “Cam Newton has been a great teammate”A lot of love between the QBs but who will win the starting job?

Sportskeeda Pro Football

That said, storylines to watch for don’t stop with the quarterback postion. It will also be intriguing to see how all the new additions on offense develop chemistry in the Patriots offense. The more reps guys like Smith and Henry can get in the preseason, the more comfortable they’ll be when it’s time for the regular season.

On defense, who can make a name for themselves along the front seven will be a good watch.

The Patriots are currently loaded with talent in the front seven and it may lead to a couple of intense roster battles. A guy like Chase Winovich, who’s shown promise, could wind up with little playing time or even traded if he doesn’t have a strong preseason.

The game will have two quarterbacks in focus. Jalen Hurts will look to cement his spot as the starting quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles and end all the speculation about the team trading for another starter. Mac Jones, though, will not be looking to supplant Cam Newton as the starter right away, but will nevertheless try to be part of the conversation for the starting quarterback when the regular season rolls around.

New England Patriots

Joejuan Williams of the New England Patriots will try to cement his spot on the 53-man roster. He had one interception and two passes stopped in the last preseason game and will look to continue that fine form.

Quez Watkins of the Philadelphia Eagles will be up against him. Watkins also had a fine game last time around. He scored a 79-yard touchown and will be looking to book his spot for the regular season.

The game will probably not showcase any new concepts. Rather, it will be about individual battles and players looking to take their final chance to make the regular season roster.

New England Patriots At Philadelphia Eagles: Prediction

Preseason seems to be of little concern to the Philadelphia Eagles.

The teams head coach Nic Sirianni knows who his starting quarterback is, and he doesnt want to risk losing Jalen Hurts before the real games begin.

Therefore, I predict the Patriots will win another preseason game on Thursday.

Cam Newton may have more chances against the Eagles as Mac Jones will follow up on his first NFL game.

Uche At A Different Frame Rate

New England Patriots vs. Philadelphia Eagles | Preseason Week 2 2021 NFL Game Highlights

Some linebackers move at a different frame rate on the screen. All pixels point toward the second pick in the 2020 Patriots draft class being one of them.

Josh Uche notched a sack in the summer finale on the first drive, beating Giants left tackle Andrew Thomas to take down signal-caller Daniel Jones. It went for a loss of six and forced a punt. And it kept the trend going for a hybrid who found the backfield as a one-year Michigan starter and did the same in a limited rookie sample.

Pro Football Focus charted Uche for three hurries through his first two games of the preseason. Those hurries transpired over 17 snaps in pass rush. More were added on Sunday. Theres a place on the field for speed. Even in the company of March signings Matthew Judon and Kyle Van Noy, the Patriots appear set to find it more so off the edges than off the ball. Uche would be on the field for a pocket-collapsing sack split between inside linebacker JaWhaun Bentley and defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. And in the second quarter, hed also be in the face of New Yorks quarterback to force an interception down at the goal line.
