FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — There was a high school feel to the Patriots‘ latest training camp session. Under the Friday night lights, New England moved practice inside Gillette Stadium for the first time this summer and played in front of season ticket holders along with Foxborough residents in the stands. While this was a different atmosphere, it didn’t bring a heightened level of competitiveness as this was largely a walkthrough, despite the players suiting up in full pads and being divvied up into two teams.
Really, this was a simulation of what game day will be like. They were calling different plays, bringing in different personnel groupings, and working through some of the logistics. Bill Belichick even went so far in this simulation that there was a brief halftime.
Even though this session was a far cry from the type of competitiveness New England will face when they actually take the field during the preseason and especially the regular season, there were still some nuggets to take from Friday’s practice.

The Continued Rise Of Mac Jones As The Man
In trying to find the next franchise QB in a post-Tom Brady world, the New England Patriots couldnt have had a much better result than Mac Jones earning Pro Bowl honors in his rookie season. However, now the low expectations are gone and fans will want fewer growing pains in year two for the Alabama alum.
The Patriots season and AFC East hopes rest on how far Jones and his arm will take them. That is a lot of pressure to put on a 23-year-old leading a franchise that expects excellence after 20 years of winning. But based on his first season, the coaching staff around him, and dealing with high expectations playing for an elite college program previously, Jones feels destined to have more success in year two.

Patriots Training Camp Presented By Optum
The countdown to kickoff for the upcoming NFL season has officially begun. On Tuesday, July 26, the New England Patriots will report to training camp and then on Wednesday, July 27 the team will conduct their first training session on the practice fields behind Gillette Stadium. The Patriots confirmed open practices on Thursday, July 28, Friday, July 29 and Saturday, July 30. Practice will be at 9:30 AM with gates opening for fans at 8:00 AM. Practices from August 1 4 have also been confirmed. Practice times for those dates are tentatively scheduled for 9:30 AM with gates opening for fans at 8:00 AM. Times will be updated on the Patriots Training Camp website, www.patriots.com/trainingcamp and on the Patriots and Gillette Stadium apps.
In addition, the Patriots announced that public access to Training Camp will conclude when they host two days of joint practices with the Carolina Panthers on Tuesday, Aug. 16, and Wednesday, Aug. 17, prior to the preseason game at Gillette Stadium on Friday, Aug. 19 at 7:00 p.m. Those practice sessions will be open to the public. The Patriots will also travel for joint practices with the Las Vegas Raiders prior to the preseason-finale on Friday, Aug. 26 at Allegiant Stadium. Last season, the Patriots traveled to Philadelphia for joint practices and hosted the New York Giants for practice sessions.
